While I am extremely disappointed and disillusioned by our sport giving in to Russia and doping, and I would have loved to see Team Canada receive the bronze they earned by competing fairly, the biggest loss IMO is this decision meaning Canada officially won no medals in Figure Skating at the 2022 Olympics resulting in lost Own The Podium funding that could have helped our athletes win future medals :(. Especially with prospects looking better for 2026 than 2022.

Question for experts in scoring Olympic FS team events, not related to the three medalists:

After the SPs, both China and Georgia tied for 5th place in points, at 22 pts per team. However, only China moved on to the next stage, the FPs. How was this decided? Did the Chinese win a certain type of score (tech or components), to break the tie?

Highest two places from two disciplines.

China had 10 + 6, Georgia had 7 + 7.

Ok, China won SPs in Pairs (Sui/Han over Safina/Berulava) and Dance (Wang/Liu over Kazakova/Reviya).

Georgia also beat China in two disciplines. Georgia beat China in Men’s (Morisi K over Boyang Jin)…and Georgia also with a strong woman, Gubanova over Zhu. But one of China’s wins was a #1 placement - Pairs.

I just rewatched the whole thing. Georgia needs to push for a stronger 2026, to make the final Top Five. Gubanova, Nika Egadze, Berulava & new partner…and Davis/Smolkin. 2026 should also see a strong Italian team, capable of pushing into the Top Five.

Not to completely abandon Canada, but do we have any information on if this will be broadcast anywhere. And I’m assuming the Russians are not coming because if they are even if it is broadcast, I won’t watch (sorry US skaters I have no desire to look at the thugs on podium)

Apparently if you live in the US and have access to Peacock it will be broadcast. I have heard nothing about any other broadcasts but presume Japan will do something.

I understand. This year, there is no “Russian Olympic Committee Team” but a few (handful of) vetted Russians are competing in the neutral team…not that any of the 2022 Russian FS bronze medalists would qualify, having made pro-Putin appearances.

I've gotta say . . . Alexa Knierem.

Eight World Championships. 13 seasons in seniors. Her highest finish at Worlds prior to her final Olympics was 7th. Her partner had covid at the qualifying Nationals.

And she ends her career with a World gold, World silver, and an Olympic Team gold medal.

(Plus Olympic bronze from 4 years prior).

In both team events, she & her partner exceeded most people's expectations in the SP, playing integral roles in the team's final placements.

Kudos. Enjoy that ceremony, Alexa. You certainly earned it.

Karen Chen posted an IG story with her new kitten climbing in her suitcase, wanting to travel to Paris. Sounds like she could be flying out tomorrow.

Nathan keeps posting cryptic IG pics - his latest is pics of when he was younger competing in gymnastics, with the caption "can't solve a Rubik's Cube and can't medal in Paris."

Not to take away from this…but I also remember Knierim/Frazier’s 2022 Olympic Team SP to The House of the Riding Sun, which led to the new music rules. Not that they planned it that way, to have a negative impact.

Steffany Hansen, IAM coach, posted on Facebook that she’s headed to Paris with Patch, Marie-France, Romain, Jamal Othman, Sam Chouinard, Ginette Cournoyer, Josee Piche, Chock/Bates, and Madi Hubbell.
Gosh, I hadn’t even thought about the coaches wanting to go to the ceremony. Todd Sand deserves to be there, but I wonder whether his health will allow it.

Very well said. I do think it really merits giving kudos to the moderators of this site for providing a space for people to have an informed and interesting discussion about this whole debacle.

Twitter/X and especially the Figure Skating subreddit on Reddit have been an absolute cesspit of pro-Russian propaganda over the last couple of years, and as absolutely heartbreaking as the outcome of this mess has been, there's a lot to be said for the healthy debate and discussion that has been fostered here.

The biggest takeaway for me is that I think if (and inevitably when) the ISU decides to allow Russia back in competition, they are going to get a heck of a lot more opposition and blowback than they think. Rightfully so. Absolutely nobody's buying the whole romper room propaganda campaign.
I don’t believe you have ever been to figure skating Reddit. All pro Russia sentiment has been banned

Fact: isu is never allowing Russia back. Isu Competition only Russia and China? No way. No other nation would ever compete again

All other countries in the world would start new figure skating organization. Or ice skating as a whole with speed skating. IOC may keep recognizing the China backed isu maybe I’m not sure

There have been 10 posts about Russian skating on the figure skating subreddit in the last 4 days alone. One of the 5 languages used in the subreddit's description is Russian. Over the past year, there have been over a dozen posts about a Russian ice dance team that has never even competed at the European or World Championships. The propaganda is very much alive and well.

Do they have any up votes! Does anyone who likes them have any up votes?

There's a lot of posts on FS Reddit about Russian skaters that get no traction at all/zero upvotes, and plenty of pushback against specific skaters, coaches etc. Like FSU, there's also some interest. But it seems unfair to characterize it as a pro-Russian community.

And that's my last comment on the topic, because this is FSU and not Reddit.

Just for context, Fanyus accuse Reddit of being pro-"North American skating", Chenbots accuse Reddit of being pro-Hanyu, Russians accuse Reddit of being pro-"American agenda", and apparently some on this forum accuse Reddit of being pro-Russian... I think what it means is that it's pro-nothing and people are biased. And also that nothing of value would be lost if Reddit were shut down.

But facts are facts and you can’t post anything there now that isn’t hatred of Russians that’s not downvoted

I thought about it which was why I thought doing it in 2026 would be better as most of these people would already be there. But it looks like they are all going anyway which is awesome. I figured they couldn't all afford it (think of all the GoFundMes to get spouses and parents to the games for various athletes) so I suspect there is sponsorship involved here. Good for them!
