2022/23 Canadian Sectionals & Fall/Winter Competitions

Junior group one won by Next Gen team member Abbie Baltzer. Issues with her triple lutz and hand down on triple triple but rest of triples good. Final junior group two on now, would imagine Next Gen Lulu Lin will be favourite to continue her lead.

Group 1 of Free Ice Dance going on now - Campbell & Fawcett had a nasty fall in their lift. They were the 2nd couple out after Robinson & Portz when I picked up the stream.

Robinson & Portz Total 157.35
Campbell & Fawcett 120.04

Up now the couple representing AZE Ritter & Brylakov

Madison & Adrian at the boards with Robinson & Portz and with Ritter & Brykalov.

I don't think there was a score announced for the AZE couple. Warm-up now underway for the final 4 couples.

Edit to add they gave the score - they are now in 2nd with a score of 152.97

I'm watching two of the Men FS - Sr and Jr - they're happening on separate rinks simultaneously :(

I'm particularly interested in Grayson Long who will be up first in the 2nd group - the last skater in the first group is just skating now. Edited to add that he had a bit of a rough skate :( He dropped from 3rd after the SP to place 9th in the FS based on the protocols: https://skateontario.org/results/23OCT/23OCTJuniorMen1FP2DRO.pdf

Flood underway then the Sr. Women FS.

Roccatani landed a few nice triples but popped a couple of them. I think she was supposed to a 3toe-3toe at the beginning but did a 2toe-3toe. Tracker disappeared before the final spin went in, but was at 43something.

The results after the first group of Sr Women FS - total scores:
Kukulowicz 117.37
Dinda 116.01
Lui 115.47
McGuire 95.97

Left to skate:

5 Natalie Roccatani Toronto CS & CC ON
6 Catherine Carle Skate Oakville ON
7 Amanda Tobin Burlington Skating Centre ON
8 Alexa Matveev York Region Skating Centre ON

9 Katherine Medland Spence Nepean SC, Inc. ON
10 Katherine Karon Riverside SC ON

The tracker isn't on during Carle's skate. She opened with a triple toe double toe but she popped her two hardest triples (lutz and l oop) into singles. She did two nice triple sals both in combo. Down on the double axel. Then pops a single axel. Sad to see her struggle as she was one of the most promising skaters pre COVID and even then she skated very well at the virtual challenge event.

I've been a fan of Amanda Tobin for a long time. First saw her at Skate Detroit many years ago. Sigh down on the flip then a single loop. Great double axel triple toe though! And a triple sal double toe. Another nice triple sal. She's so good when she's on. Triple toe. Double axel double toe. Nice comeback after a rough start!
I mentioned this in the Canadian women's thread but for some reason her ISU technical minimums from the Cranberry event are not on the ISU website even though her bio was updated with her placement.

After the 2nd of 3 groups of Sr. Women FS:

Tobin 148.68
Roccatani 135.54
Carle 131.44
Matveev 124.42
Kukulowicz 117.37
Dinda 116.01
Lui 115.47
McGuire 95.97

Third group warming up - no ice resurface.

I was distracted during Matveev's skate but I think she landed a nice triple toe and a triple loop in there.

Medland-Spence. TRIPLE LUTZ! OMG huge and clean. Triple loop combo but that part of the rink that blocks the camera view LOL. -GOE so probably not great. Double axel triple toe. Down on the triple flip. BUT LANDS THE SECOND ONE IN COMBO! Skate Canada better be paying attention! How can you deny this skater an international assignment??

ETA bad splat on a double axel there then comes back with another triple loop with a step out. I thought she was done jumping LOL.

It really feels like skating season when I’m watching sectionals

Katherine Medland Spence

3Z, really nice
3L turns? Into 2S
2A+3T probably will be reviewed
3F hard fall
3F+2T
2A yikes waxel and fall
3L step out

A bit up and down today, but she has come so far quickly. She is someone I would be investing in. She has solid basics and has displayed improvement consistently.

She's a very promising skater. Her music was pretty -- anyone know what it was?

LOL - oh, wow. Medland Spence is pleasant enough, but Skate Canada has no business sending her out for international assignments. L2 on the step sequence and 2 falls in the FS and no triple-triples - total score of 159.59. That's the sort of skate that would get panned (rightly) in the US Women's discussion thread.

With 4 skaters left:

Medland Spence 159.59
Tobin 148.68
Roccatani 135.54
Carle 131.44
Matveev 124.42
Kukulowicz 117.37
Dinda 116.01
Lui 115.47
McGuire 95.97

Katherine Karon

This blue looks great on her.

3Z+2T, edge call likely
3F fall
3S+2T
3Z, tight and hard to see the landing
2A+Euler+3S, under I think but good effort!
2A
2L

I don’t recall having seen her skate before, but that was quite respectable. Good job :)
