I thought Med’s jumps looked better, I also applaud her commitment to keep working on fixing her double axel, she really needs to work on her spins. You can tell she knows how to turn it on, like the step sequence at the end I cheer hard for Med, I was not a fan of her when she was in her prime but I give her major credit for continuing to skate because she loves it and continuing to improve on different aspects of her skating. Plus I give her major props for switching to a non-Russian coach outside of Russia, have any other top Russian’s done that? Nothing against any of the Russian coaches in any country (they clearly have lots of good students) but finding what she thought was best for her and going outside her comfort zone makes me happy.
I thought Trusova actually looked the best of them all, as far as elements go. But honestly she could have been skating to anything!
But I think my favorite part of the competition was after Trusova skated and they panned to the coaches and we see Kostornaia standing behind the coaches, Illynkh turns and gives her a hug. Whether it was her idea or not to switch coaches, I’m sure this competition was hard for her. I rarely see Eteri give her skaters hugs and never when she had another skater just perform well. I realize that I don’t see most of what goes on, obviously, but the fact that she felt comfortable enough to be around the coaches after she skated and got some comfort from them Just makes me happy.
I see so many people leave skating very bitter about the sport, so when I see people like Med and Tuk skating for the love of it I am thrilled.
