2020-21 Canadian Women News & Updates

Wow Schizas had the skate of her life and is leading the short, the first skater to get a Q. 68.77. Bausback probably won't make the free, but hope for two spots is not dead. Honestly I was worried whether Canada would guarantee one spot here so I'll take it.
Remind me again what needs to happen for 2? If Bausback doesn’t make the free, does Schizas need to be top 10 (and then we also need to secure the second spot at Nebelhorn?). And if Bausback does make the free, is it Schizas needs to be top 12?

Yes that's the rule. I wonder who would get sent to Nebelhorn. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. Let's see where she ranks after the short.

Maddie, our savior. I guess she's doing the Osmond thing of showing up to save the ladies mid-cycle, but got the timing somewhat off due to this being a non-season.

Well her last name rhymes with Jesus...

Schizas looks like she has a shot of being in the top ten! Impressive debut, especially since our skaters haven't been able this compete this year

I'll be annoyed if (as looks possible) Maddie gets an ordinal high enough that she'd have kept 2 spots if Emily had made the free skate.

Yeah...staying top 12 seems like a much easier task than top 10 at the moment. Top 12 is not a slam dunk either though and I’m just trying to remind myself that keeping two spots was always a long shot.

But she really delivered today and the judges responded well to an unknown skating early. I am thrilled for her today and hope she can have a great showing for the long as well.

Madeline is 9th after the short program. Two spots for the Olympics is definitely possible.
Technically Madeline can't qualify a 2nd spot for the Olympics - she got 1 spot by making the Free Skate - she can earn Canada a spot at Nebelhorn by finishing in the top 10 where another skater would be able to qualify a 2nd spot at the Olympics.

How does that work?

How does that work?
In order to earn an Olympic berth for a country the country must have a skater in the free skate, and because Bausback missed the free skate we can't earn the 2nd spot at the World Championships. Normally countries that earn spots at the World Championships can't spend skaters to the Olympic Qualifying Competition at Nebelhorn, but they changed the rules for this Olympic cycle so that more countries earn berths at the Olympics.

How does that work?
The post-2018 rules eliminate 'free rider' spots for the Olympics. If a country qualifies a second or third spot that it didn't already have (or if it qualifies a spot for a skater who didn't make the free, as would be what happened with Emily here if Maddie is top ten) then instead of getting the spot outright the country gets the chance to qualify an additional spot at Nebelhorn (and the skater(s) who made the free at the pre-Olympic Worlds can't be the ones to compete for it).

So, if a country sends two skaters and they finish 3rd and 10th, for example, would they earn two spots or three?

She looked so relaxed and at ease. Not a hint of nerves
Now that she will be under the spot light let’s hope that continues. She is like Kaetlyn as she didn’t do much in juniors and started peak 18+ and in seniors.

From not being selected for the 2019-20 Junior Grand Prix to 2nd last flight at 2021 Senior Worlds, that's a staggering leap for Schizas.
And that shows how much Skate Canada doesn’t detect great talents and stick to silly rules. Schisms has been great for two years and has clearly the potential before. Not sending her to a JGP was a highway robbery.

Madeline was a little bit undermarked in my opinion. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 points would have been a fair score for her lovely SP program and performance. But a very encouraging start, anyway and finishing in top 9 after the short must be a great achievement for her.

Schizas improved a lot in two years. Last season she wasn't even attempting a triple lutz and now she's doing a triple lutz triple toe and getting one of the highest marks for a combo jump at worlds. She may have been overlooked for the JGP in the 2019-2020 season but she did get a junior international that was part of the selection for Youth Olympics and she finished behind Catherine Carle. The progress she has made since then has been remarkable. And she did get two international assignments post nationals 2020 (one junior and one senior) which isn't something Skate Canada does often.

The women's short event was excellent judge in all.. she may be 2 places higher(7th overall) but I may change my mind if I watch again and I am only 50 50 about it...

The 70 mark is a big deal... she needs everything...

You hit the nail on the head. No JGP and leaving her off the Next Gen team was a crime in my book. Even though she finished third at 2020 nationals her talent was so obvious it should have sent up screaming red flags to Skate Canada. Instead, as usual, they chose to focus on a weak hope that a particular someone would get back to their former state.

Being overlooked for 2020 Worlds - even though she was only lady to medal internationally that season - was a slap in the face. She has had to push harder than anyone really to prove herself.

I hope she skates lights out in the free. I will be cheering her every step of the way.
