2019 Japan Open, October 5 + Carnival on Ice gala

Some other practice report articles:
Zagitova
She nailed a 3Lz-3Lo and showed good stsq in the runthrough.

Miyahara (photo)
Looks she changed her costumes for FS.

Shoma
He plans to water down his jump content at JO since the timing of choreographing his LP was too close to JO. He wishes to cook this program as the season goes. As for being coach-less he said "Shame, even when I'm in good condition, I don't have anyone to share the good feelings with. (laugh) Techniques aside, I just found that having someone to have chats with was a good point of working with a coach." Regarding Lambiel's camp in Sept he said "I wanted to experience various things. Experiencing the environment was more important than leaning something there." "He (=Lambiel) is a really kind person. No other words."

Kihira
She got injured in her left leg (foot?) prior to Autumn Classic. Due to the injury she limits her training at this point to be lighter than usual. She'll think about attempting 4S or not after seeing how tomorrow morning's training goes.

Trusova’s FS jump content:
4Lz, 4S, 4T-3T, 2A, 4T, 3Lz-3Lo, 3Lz-Euler-3S
I recently came across an interview with Trusova on the Olympic Channel. Her brothers' comments were the cutest thing about this video. The younger one is wise beyond his years.

And women. And how in blazes does Rika's name get spelled wrong on an official list??

I still like the time at the 2009 World Championships, Miki Ando was credited as skating for Canada.

From memory, the announcer for that event was pretty shaky and got almost everything wrong, too.

Results for the ladies are on twitter (and I think everyone else too) but I don't think it has been broadcast yet so I'm not sure if people want spoilers?

Edit: yes confirmed everything below is correct:

If we are talking results here:
Trusova: 160.53 and Zagitova - 154.41

I will comment that Zagitova got pretty close in scores (only 6 points difference) when she has no quads and Trusova landed 4 I think with varying levels of success. I wonder if this kind of scoring will continue or it is is special Japan Open scoring. But I gather the closeness in scores was attributable to Zagitova getting much higher PCS.

I can't wait for footage of the event. Sounds great.

Can Trusova compete in men’s so I can get the Russian girls I want onto the Worlds team? :shuffle:

I really like Bradie, she’s making obvious improvements in her overall skating, and there are some really nice moves in this new LP. But it really didn’t take off for me until the last 45 seconds. And it all looks a bit dated compared to the Japanese and Russians.

Kihira channeling Laetitia Hubert in the footwork, but there aren’t enough arm movements!

The 3A looks fantastic! Both of them, in fact.

This program isn’t as immediately gripping as last year’s masterpiece, but I may end up liking it even more by the end of the season. It’s definitely more challenging and is really pushing her on the performance side of things. She’s not all the way there yet, but I see improvement even since Autumn Classic. I like the new jump layout and really appreciate her taking on a program that’s totally different from last year.

Zagitova’s LP is great; she looks so much more comfortable than last season. She clearly enjoys this program too and it shows.

The choreography for the first music cut to TFB is a little too busy for me, but I really like the choreography for the last two music cuts. Program builds really well.

Interesting results.

Fascinating stuff that there was only 6 points difference between Trusova and Zagitova where Trusova landed 4 quads and Zagitova zero.

A fall on one of those quads and Zagitova would have beaten a 3 quad program. Looking at the protocol, you can see that GOE and PCS made the difference.

If one was to combine a short program with the free skate, I suspect the end result may have even been much closer.

I wonder if this focus on GOE and PCS will last, or if the judging will go down the usual predictable route of inflating PCS to match TES?

Bradie's skating does feel rather scripted, if that makes sense. I was getting a 1982 European Championships ladies' free skate vibe as well.
