The GP (total) minimum cut-off has been 3/5 of the world champion's (total) score. I'm not sure if they round or trim.

So Russia has Zagitova, Medvedeva, and Samodurova guaranteed two each = 6 spots.
Tuktamysheva, Trusova, Shcherbakova, Kostornaia, Sakhanovich, Tarusina, Gubanova, Konstantinova, and Sotskova guaranteed one each = 9 spots IF all new age-eligible skaters go senior (and I can't see any of the top 3 from Nationals not moving up-- maybe Tarusina stays junior? Either way, it's going to be either 14 or 15 spots guaranteed by the ISU rules.

If all of the above do compete as seniors, that would mean one of Tuktamysheva, Trusova, Shcherbakova, and Kostornaia would only get one event. Skaters like Konstantinova and Sotskova have no chance at a second event. If Tarusina stays junior, then they probably all get two and the others all get one.

Poor Leonova, just missing out on that top 24 SB list. But that sure would've complicated things even more.

What are the odds Sotskova will get Sokolova'd (for GP at least)?

Here’s what I think for ladies:
18 spots clearly maxed out by Russian ladies
Kihira, Sakamoto, Miyahara, Mihara, Higuchi - 2 initial spots; Yamashita, Shiraiwa- 1 spot; 1 additional host pick (most likely)- 13 spots total for Japan
Tursynbaeva, Lim, Hendrickx, and Daleman get two spots - 8 used there.
Tennell, Bell, and Cui all with 2 spots initially, and USFS saves two host picks for SA to get the maximum number of entries- because it’s doubtful anyone else gets in this year - 8 spots total.
Yelim Kim, Lindfors, Paganini all get one initial spot, and Meite and Lecavelier get their guaranteed spot plus I figure they both probably get their host picks immediately - 8 spots there.
Canada will have 2 more host picks, China will have up to 3, and France will potentially have 1 more if they use it- 6 more spots.
I could see Marin Honda getting an initial (non-host) pick, Young You if she moves up, and maybe two of the Europeans (Peltonen, Schott). Or maybe Lindfors, as European medalist, gets two immediately.
China maybe return a spot or two and you never know with France #3.

Men on the other hand- there are going to be plenty of available spots once all of the guaranteed spots are accounted for.

In addition to the top 12 in the world, I could see Hiwatashi, Voronov, Savosin, Grassl, Messing, Nguyen (maybe both using a SC host pick but at least one of them), Cha, Kvitelashvili, Vassiljevs, and Samohin getting two spots off the bat.

Bychenko is retired now and Kovtun is not competing, correct?

Tanaka, Tomono, Krasnozsohn, Pulkinen, Aliev, are all guaranteed a spot. One of the two Japanese men might be an initial host pick on top of their guaranteed spot.

That’s still only 49 or 50 spots out of 72. USA would have 1 host pick open most likely, Canada 1 or 2, China 1 or 2, France 2, Russia 1, and Japan 1? if all countries max out their host picks.

Picking this year's Worlds team is going to make last year look like a walk in the park, I don't envy the Russian Fed at all! Well, perhaps it will all sort itself out by then and be surprisingly clear.

Last year at this point no one would have thought Samodurova would skate 2 grand prix's , euros and worlds.

I hope Yuhana gets NHK! Frankly she skated better than Marin last season despite her SP woes. Plus she finished way higher at Nationals.

Russia's biggest issue is the same they've faced in the JGP the last several years, and that's strategically spreading out the skaters across the comps so they maximize the number of skaters who make it into the GPF. They don't want their top 6 skaters competing against each other in individual events, but for them to dominate the GPF instead. There's a lot of strategic positioning involved. The problem is they can move skaters around in the JGP series to maximize standings and they don't have that ability in the GP events since they don't have the same level of control over which skaters go where. Japan has the same issue to a lesser extent.

One thing: What comes first in all the scenarios is HOST PICK. Then the selection by Worlds 2018 finish.

While purely in terms of spots it would make sense to keep all three host spots at SCI and have Daleman go elsewhere, from a marketing/audience perspective I don't think Skate Canada would want to do that. Gabrielle is Canada's star female skater now, and they'll want the big guns for the home crowd. Indeed, it was kind of awkward when she withdrew from SCI last season because her face was all over the arena on Skate Canada's banners, pre-recorded video pieces, etc.

Aside from how often the ISU's rules are like red lights in Boston, ie, suggestions, according to the announcement, there's no mention of split couples who placed 1-6 with their previous partner in one of the official categories, and there are two other things that have filtered back that aren't published anywhere:

1. Host picks are among the first two, probably the first, as evidenced by the occasion that JPN and at least one other Fed has chosen "too many" host entries from the same Worlds selection group, leaving another Fed "too many" entries from a different group.

However, there's also:

2. The podium from the prior year allegedly gets its choice of events in placement order.

There have been some discussions here about certain skaters/teams wanting specific events, but this may clash with a host pick of someone lower on the medal stand. I think one was Chen, who was expected to want an event during school break, but that clashed with NHK, and then maybe James/Cipres who are doing/coaching on Battle of the Blades, and that might collide with their GP plans.

Also, have any seeded skaters/teams confirmed that they are skipping GP? Because that would bump other skaters into the seeded group.

The 2018-2019 season was my first season as an avid figure skating fan because I only started following figure skating after the 2018 Winter Olympics. Thus, I wasn't able to really experience the thrill (and boredom) of the off-season, so the 2019-2020 season will be my first "true" season as a fan. I can't wait to make predictions and study the lists with ya'll.

P.S. - Don't worry, I made sure to really brush up on my knowledge and did all the research I could so I can fully enjoy the sports. I actually found this website after I searched up who this Alysa Liu kid was. T_T

So Russia has Zagitova, Medvedeva, and Samodurova guaranteed two each = 6 spots. Tuktamysheva, Trusova, Shcherbakova, Kostornaia, Sakhanovich, Tarusina, Gubanova, Konstantinova, and Sotskova guaranteed one each=9 spots IF all new age-eligible skaters go senior..

This is what Alexandre Lakernik said in a recent interview to Sport-Express (which was mainly about new UR and technical rules, and which Russian skaters they benefit or hinder, but also discusses the GP selection issues).
He only gives a clear picture (mentions specific names) about WC medalists (Zag and Med) and JWC (Trus and Scher).

Interesting that, according to Lakernik, Jr. World medallists get to pick before everyone else from 4th at Worlds down, when, according to the announcement, they aren't guaranteed any spots and are only listed in the one-event section, and this was an explicit change from being guaranteed one spot in the past .

Maybe they'll update it this year, or maybe they'll continue to treat the announcement like the paper used to wrap fish and chips.
