U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost is Pope Leo XIV (Pope Francis has passed away)

I'm in shock. I never thought we'd see an American Pope in our time.

ETA - Prevost has been responsible for the selection/appointment of bishops since 2023. He also has served in Peru and is a dual citizen of the US and Peru, so he's both American and Latin American.

ETA2 - and he's young. He'll be 70 in September, so expect a long pontificate.

ETA3 - graduate of Villanova, so some time in Philly as well, but mostly spent his life in Chicago, Peru and Rome.

This is a big deal for everyone. John Paul II was instrumental in bringing down the Soviet Union. Waiting with interest for Pope Leo’s impact outside the church.
Yeah, not sure why anyone would be celebrating the potential downfall of their own country, but okay...

He has been a voice for peace, desperate refugees and the environment. If you think that might bring down his country, I don’t know what to say.
You're the one who made the observation. I merely called you out on the fact that you appear to be actively rooting for the downfall of your own country. If you don't know what to say, that's probably a good thing, because what you said that started this conversation doesn't reflect particularly well upon you if you truly care about your country.

I noted that John Paul had a huge impact on history, not that I hope Leo brings down another country. There are many ways to have impact.

I would not be surprised, however, if he was chosen partially as a very visible counterweight to the other American leader impacting the world.
