Victorians would dress the deceased and take portrait photos with the family members.
 
Taking photos of dead bodies in the coffin is an old Italian tradition, too.

Taking a selfie with a dead body of a famous person is another story, though. Tacky and tawdry, and not comparable with the examples others have shared.

Yes, but that requires there being any landlines left. A lot of companies & business have moved to VOIP, especially in the last 5-8 years. My last employer got rid of landlines for most of us before the pandemic. Even if you had a direct number to reach you, it was still all VOIP rather than a landline tied only to your physical desk. And when was the last time you saw a pay phone? ;)

This is kind of old news. The conviction was in 2023 and he said several days ago that he wouldn’t participate in the conclave.
 
The cardinal procession has started for the papal conclave.

The Sistine Chapel looks magnificent.

Shall we change the title of this thread to something like, “Pope Francis has passed away & The Papal Conclave”?

I’m assuming that these will stay live throughout the conclave.

If the cardinals have a vote tonight, I doubt it will select a pope. I think the last two conclaves (2005, 2013) were only about two days and they had 4-5 ballots.

Fox has been covering the procession too - 2013 was 5 votes, 2005 was 4 votes.

ETA - Pope John Paul II's election occurred on the 8th vote.

It makes more sense to change the title once the new pope is announced - unless this ends up being an unusually long or dramatic conclave :)

I’m wondering now if this conclave may take longer. There’s a lot more cardinals this time. It’s 133 cardinals - so they need 89 votes (2/3) to select a pope.

All the "talk" coming out of the Vatican would indicate that it may take longer. Seems like most observers are expecting it to go until at least Friday.

In the movie, don't they have a vote on the first day? At least from the reporting I've seen, the first vote is expected today. It's already evening there.

It doesn't take that long to write down a name and deposit the ballot. The ballot is secret, so they don't announce the votes as they go. They just count the votes at the end. There's no reason why it can't be done in the first few hours.
 
There is speculation among journalists that the delay in the vote may be due to one of the cardinals going on too long in his prayer or meditation before the vote. :lol:

Or, maybe some guy arrived claiming that Pope Francis had secretly appointed him a cardinal and they had to take the time to determine if the guy should be included in the conclave. :lol:
 
Earlier on Fox they mentioned that during the last two conclaves, the smoke on the first day appeared between sometime between maybe 7:30pm & 8:15pm local time, so we've run past that by a good 20 minutes now. Anyone who expected to see smoke 2 hours ago would have been smokin' something themselves, IMO, lol. But it does seem like we're in the "anytime now" window for the evening.
