USFS' press release today (May 27):

U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame coach Evy Scotvold passed away on May 25, 2021, at the age of 85.

Known as one of the preeminent technical coaches of his time, Scotvold, and his wife Mary, guided many of the sport’s top skaters, including Olympic medalists Nancy Kerrigan, Paul Wylie and Scott Hamilton. They also helped lead standouts such as Terry Kubicka, Sandy Lenz, David Santee, Jimmie Santee and Jennifer Kirk to sterling careers.

As a competitive skater, Scotvold was coached by greats Montgomery Wilson, Maribel Vinson Owen, Howard Nicholson, Eugene Turner and Gus Lussi.

“Evy and Mary Scotvold were so instrumental in my growth both as a skater and as a man,” David Santee said in a tribute post on Facebook. “Evy was a master technician but what set him apart was his ability to know what to say and how to say it.”

PSA coaches of the year in 1993, the couple was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the PSA Hall of Fame in 2007.

More information is pending.

Thank you to my long time coach and mentor Evy Scotvold. Evy helped me learn so many things in my life, many of them about skating. Both he and Mary helped me to gain the skill and confidence to reach beyond my expectations and put the past behind me in the Olympics and my pro career. I am so glad to have had the chance to say thank you in person over the weekend for the energy, care and thought devoted to me as a skater and as a person. Peace be with you Boss.

RIP, Evy! It's really an end of an era for East Coast coaching legends with his death this year on top of Ron Ludington's last May. I have fond memories of watching them and their fabulous students at many Easterns and Nationals. I knew Evy and his wife Mary were primarily responsible for the incredible careers of Paul and Nancy, but somehow I didn't realize Scott Hamilton spent part of his career with them. I doubt there would be a beautiful new complex for the SC of Boston without Evy, so it's good to know there will always be a strong training program in Boston.

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Scotvold
Mary Batdorf Scotvold ... won the novice ladies title at the 1959 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She later skated with Ice Follies and was married to former U.S. pair champion Ronald Ludington, for a time. In the mid-1970s, after separating from Ludington, she began coaching at the Wagon Wheel rink in Rockton, Illinois, where her pupils included a young Scott Hamilton. It was there that she teamed up with Evy Scotvold. They coached in Janesville, Wisconsin for a time before relocating to the Boston area in 1986. They are now semi-retired and coaching part-time in Jacksonville, Florida.
This February 2018 article briefly mentions the Scotvolds in Jacksonville, Florida:
There often are figure skaters, some dreaming of being future Olympians, and a couple with memories of past Olympics. Mary and Evy Scotvold, perhaps best known as Nancy Kerrigan’s coaches, moved to North Florida and now can be found working with young skaters on this ice.

Mark Militano was married to Mary’s twin sister at one time, Matt Militano is probably a nephew of Evy’s.
