He is a huge threat to both Chen and Hanyu at this point. HUGE. Especialy as the pressure on him does not come anywhere to either of those guys.
You are right. It is going to make that event very dramatic. As much as I love Yuma, and agree with all the praise for him, I don't want him to beat Nathan here. But if he does, I'm sure it will be fair.

I don't want him to beat Yuzuru either LOL.

I think both Nathan and Yuzuru are seasoned competitors in their second and third Olympics. They know how to handle the Olympic pressure.

from the look of it, Yuzuru is not really skating for a third OGM. He just wants to land the 4A. Nathan's case is different, He knows what he wants (OGM), he knows how to get it, and he has prepared for it. I think he will get it.

I don't expect Yuma to win the gold here, but he is a threat for a podium finish.

Great SP from Yuma. He has the most gorgeous quads I've ever seen. Love the performance and enjoy the music that Weir ridiculously called "pedestrian".
Good luck on the LP young man !

Congratulations on the silver! And reposting this here:

Han Yan's Weibo:

帮我转达 键山优真: 我真的太喜欢你了 别气馁,下个四年就是你的天下 !

"Pass this on for me: Yuma Kagiyama, I like you so so much. Don't be discouraged, the next four years will be yours!"

And a fan said in the comments "Yuma wrote in his Olympic bio that you're his hero." Han replied "He is my hero too."

ISU's Yuma Kagiyama article (March 18): https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/...n-gearing-up-for-montpellier?templateParam=15
Excerpts:
“During the Olympic Games, I didn't think about the Olympics being special and remembered that I had to perform like I would in a normal competition. I wasn't too nervous, which was good. I thought, ‘If you don't enjoy it, you lose it’,” he explained.
“I was happy to be able to be myself, and what was good outside of the competition was that I was able to interact with other athletes more than I expected to. There was the exhibition gala at the end, and I stayed there (in Beijing) for a long time, but it was great to watch the other competitions on TV and to talk to other athletes in the Olympic Village, even if it was just to greet them.”
In any case, Yuma is hoping to be able to enjoy the event. “The desire to enjoy is strong, but I'm concerned about whether I'll be able to perform well, so until I get there I don't know yet whether I'll be able to enjoy it or not,” he offered. “But my practice is getting better and better, so I will do my best to believe in myself and finish with a smile on my face. (My performance) must lead the World Championships next year, also in terms of my personal performance and quota places. If I show a good performance, I'm sure I'll get the results I deserve, so for now I will concentrate all my energy on what I have to do.”

Belated Happy 19th Birthday (May 5, same day as Nathan's) to Yuma! :)

Yuma turned up in Roman Sadovsky's photo today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CdWp58duuXI/

May 2nd article (he was performing in the Prince Ice World shows at the Shin-Yokohama Skate Center in late April/early May; he skated his "When You're Smiling" SP):
Google translated excerpt:
Orientalbio Co., Ltd., a health food sales business that belongs to Kao Miura and Rion Sumiyoshi, has recently established a skate club. [...]
Kagiyama smiled with a shy smile, "It seems that my photobook will be released ..." and invited laughter in the hall with a natural remark, "Because it is a photobook, it is my main photobook."
Regarding the content, he appealed, "It is a photo book that records the growth process from Novice and junior days, centering on the photographs of the Olympics.
Regarding the release, "I heard that it will be around mid-June ...". Details will be officially announced in the future, but the title will be "Go for the Top" and will be published by SHUFUNOTOMO.

Yuma attended his first baseball game (Angels in Anaheim, CA) on June 11th and got to see Shohei Ohtani's home run and stayed for the fireworks afterwards:

Final sentence: "Kagiyama had been training camp in Los Angeles from the beginning of this month to learn a new program for next season (22-23 season)."

Shae-Lynn Bourne has choreographed Yuma's new short program to "Believer" by Imagine Dragons (June 14):

ETA: https://twitter.com/figureskatingm1/status/1536474064176685056
"The current layout plan is to do 4S, 3A, 4T3T, in order to increase his points by having the combo in bonus."

Re-posting here (thanks @Wyliefan!):
This thread (said to be from an interview around the end of September) has some updates on Yuma. Sounds like his injury was pretty serious; he had to rest for two months, and is now working on getting his 3A and quads back.
Copying out the tweets:
Some Yuma updates from yesterday's FSTV (paraphrasing)
  • Yuma resumed training jumps about 5 days ago after resting for 2 months
  • He got his triples back pretty quickly but is still having trouble with 3A and quads
  • He said the pain is about 20% left
- He doesn't feel exactly frustrated since there're a lot of challenges other than jumps (such as new programs and rule changes)
- (Regarding his 5 quads layout) He wants to slowly adjust his condition back during GPS & hopes to peak at Nationals
- He has nothing to lose even if he failed this season, so he'll try to do his best with a positive attitude
  • (by Masakazu-san) recovering from injury is the 1st priority
  • Goals this season: incorporate 4Lz & 4Lo into program, refine both SP & FS, win Nationals and medal at WC
Overall he seems to have a good mindset, I hope he'll give the injury time to heal & come back stronger! 🥰🙏

ETA linked to a translation of Yuma's tweeted statement re. his withdrawal from the Japan Open on Oct. 4 (FS & team competition was on Oct. 8): https://twitter.com/skatejapanews/status/1577541606202302464
“I got injured near the end of July, I trained while treating my ankle but I have to withdraw from the competition as I am not recovered yet. I will focus on treatment and will do my best to recover.”

Yuma's Instagam post today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjsHHq3uiSu/
Machine translation:
This is an announcement. . Thank you so much for your continued support. . As previously stated in the article, the Grand Prix series has been decided not to fully recover until the injury is fully recovered. . A left ankle injury suffered around the end of July has been diagnosed with difficulty appearing in the match. . We are sorry for everyone's concern due to the ongoing event following the Japan Open. . I will continue to concentrate on treatment and properly heal my injuries, and I will do my best to be able to perform in perfect condition at the All-Japan Championships. 🙏
Japanese news article: "The reason for his absence is the delay in recovery from the left talus fatigue bone injury and left fibula stress fracture suffered at the end of August."

Re-posting from the Grand Prix Assignments thread in GSD:
:(
“Unfortunate news that Yuma Kagiyama has to withdraw from this season’s Grand Prix due to left talus and fibula injuries.

He hopes to be recovered in time for Japanese Nationals in December.”

Time to bump up Yuma's thread with his clip practicing figures, filmed by Lori Nichol in Italy :): https://www.instagram.com/reel/CqvhDWOp4t4/

From the Japanese news thread:
"Yuma Kagiyama recently attended a training camp in Varese, Italy. He has been working on his skating and expressions with Lori Nichol and Carolina Kostner." https://twitter.com/skatejapanews/status/1643536876454674433
He plans to keep both his programs for next season. Shae-Lynn Bourne choreographed his "Believer" by Imagine Dragons SP and Lori Nichol his FS to "Rain, In Your Black Eyes" by Ezio Bosso.
ETA an on ice photo of Yuma with Lori Nichol: https://twitter.com/kaya_mtk/status/1643612735463215112
ETA: Yuma placed 8th at Nationals in December 2022 and, a few days later, withdrew from the January 2023 World University Games 2023 in Lake Placid in order to give his injury more time to heal.

On March 18 he posted a pic with Mao Asada (he attended her BEYOND show): https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7YSeEJzM6/

Hope his injury heals completely and his artistry is improved next time we see him in a competition. I missed his energy this year.

3-minute video uploaded on Varese News' YT channel today Carolina Kostner e Yūma Kagiyama al Palaghiaccio di Varese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnFRhuKV260
Caption machine translated:
Weeks of great skating, those spent starting from 20 March at the Varese ice rink. In the morning sessions, the structure hosted Carolina Kostner again, for training sessions performed under the expert gaze of Lori Nichol, a leading figure in the skating world which has been inducted into the Professional Skater's Association Hall of Fame since 2011.
On the ice with her also Yūma Kagiyama, star of Japanese skating who chose Varese for this training session which is part of his recovery path from a recent injury that temporarily excluded him from international competitions.
Source article in Italian:

April 18th article:
Machine translated excerpt:
He said that he was recovering to the point where he could jump triples, and said, "I'm getting ready to jump quads at any time," with a bright expression. He will travel to the United States in May and slip (tune up choreography?) in the short program (SP).
Taking the opportunity of a stress fracture in his fibula, he reassessed his physical fitness and started taking blood samples regularly from November last year on the advice of a nutritionist. I realized the importance of vitamin D and zinc deficiency and sunbathing, and tried to improve my life. "Because of my injury, I had more time to study, and it was a good time to get to know my body better. I hope I can become a body that will never get injured again," he vowed to make a full recovery.
Reportedly he is keeping his 2022-23 music for both programs (Shae-Lynn Bourne choreographed his "Believer" SP).

It's good news that Yuma has been included in the top group of the 2023-24 national team :): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ason-news-updates.109761/page-12#post-6427602
