Gymnastics #25 - Onward to LA

I like Claire Pease but her beam routine is literally exactly like Nastia's. Move for move. It's kind of creepy, how Valeri is trying to make her Nastia #2.

NGL, I am totally fine with a Nastia #2. I loved Nastia's style of gymnastics and would gladly welcome it back. I really liked Claire's gymnastics.

They may have some similar skills and styles but the actual combinations and even some of the elements are totally different. They did different mounts, turns, and gym/acro combos.

I have tickets for Day 2 of the men’s event at the US Championships next Saturday. This is my first time attending a gymnastics event live so I’m very excited! The only thing I can’t find is how long the event will last?
I checked the youtube live stream from last year, and it was just under 3 1/2 hours, but that included awards. The competition itself was just under 3 hours. Enjoy! Men's gymnastics is very exciting to watch live.

Paul Juda making that Olympic team last year will always be one of my all time favorite moments in gymnastics (the team announcement from Trials still makes me cry). I've been such a big fan of his for a long time and seeing him live out his Olympic dreams and then win a national title with his college team this year are both feel good moments that will always make me smile. Wishing him and his fiance all the best in their life together! ❤️

Asher Hong came back this season with something to prove after almost not making that Olympic team last year. He looked great over these last two days of competition and I hope he carries that with him to Worlds this fall! :cheer:

Whittenburg's rings dismount was SO SCARY I'm just glad he landed safely
Oh boy that was terrifying. I could barely look.

not a fan of the new uniform look that Fred is going for. :slinkaway
I understand his issues, but I think the baggier longer shorts over leggings cuts off the leg line. The baggier shirt with the shorts can make it less clear whether there is a break at the waist, hips. He’s citing basketball, but this isn’t basketball and those form deductions matter. I get that he doesn’t like the singlet wedgie or the revealing nature of the tight pants, but this version might mask performance deductions. Maybe something based on mens figure skating pants? Ballet dancers wear even tighter tights so I’m not sure what would work here.

Like the women can now choose unitards, could men choose to wear the singlet with the shorter shorts for all events? Not sure if that is what he’s going for though.

I get what Fred's issue is, but I don't think his solution is much of a solution. The top and shorts look fine, but the weird leggings look way less cool than the footie PJs look already.

I recently read someone suggesting that regular joggers would fulfill what he's looking for in a way that actually looks good.

I agree with all of you that the uniform is not great yet, but I'm happy that someone is actually trying something. Like I'm sure there's been loads of people who are like "wow this sucks" but then just go with it. Frederick is willing to try things, take some deductions, and get people talking. That is all good even if the entire concept is not fully cooked yet.

Yuck. Because of this apparent third playoff hole at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, NBC’s Nationals coverage isn’t going to start where I’m at (DC area) until about 7:25pm ET. ⛳☹️

Never mind. NBC decided to skip airing their nightly news broadcast. Nats is now on! 👍

WAIT. Leanne Wong has a third business? And it’s coffee? ☕🤔

This interview with Dominique Moceanu... isn't she the poor girl who forever traumatized me watching beam by hitting her head during a routine? :yikes: And her son is a gymnast?

I think she hit her head or at least had a wonky thing happen on beam during the 1996 Olympic AA competition but you might be thinking of Amy Chow at the US Trials earlier that year who actually did hit her head on a beam routine and scared the crap out of everyone. (Dom's son is a gymnast though so you were right about that....he's pretty good!)

Hezly looks SO solid tonight but Leanne is also looking really strong too. Should be a fun final rotation! :cheer:

I am a big fan of Simone Rose. I've been watching her since she was a tiny junior gymnast and she's grown up into a lovely young senior gymnast. Excited to see her show some pretty good consistency at this competition! :cheer2:

Wong is only 0.2 behind going into floor. Imagine if she had done the Cheng on night one. Anyway I'm sure she would be thrilled for a best ever finish for herself at nationals.

I love Leanne, so I'm thrilled for her. Not as high of difficulty as some other competitors but clean counts! :cheer:

This may be what I was thinking of, I thought she fell off but somehow she managed the impossible and stay on.
:yikes:

Then raised her arm gracefully and raised her chin 🤕

... then completed the rest of the routine, including a front tuck, the Miller, and a stuck dismount.

A few thoughts from my first ever gymnastics event after attending the men's final Saturday night:

  • The men did a lot of menning.
  • Seeing the high bar in person was what I was most excited to experience and it didn't disappoint.
  • Jackson Harrison's awesome flair was a highlight.
  • I like that the pacing is fast and there's constant action, but I don't like that there isn't at least one break to be able to stretch and walk around. My back was killing me in that seat for 2.5 hours. Can we get a halftime up in here?
  • I'll take our Rusty over Gymnastics Rusty.
  • The wait for the medal ceremonies was too long and giving out six medals is ridiculous. Never want to hear people making fun of our pewter ever again.
