Simone is hilarious. When I saw the headline, it was only partially revealed, said "Simone Retired." Admittedly, I felt a kind of way, even though I had no right to. She retired the vault. Have you ever seen a funeral like this one? 🤣🤣🤣
 
The 3rd and 4th episodes of the Simon Biles documentary Rising is out. Great insight to Simone going through the Olympics, some great one-liners from her coach Cecile. I wish they could have added an episode on the Floor Ex bronze medal debacle.

I saw that and gymcastic has posted it too, with a note from the family. But I haven't seen it in the news yet. Apparently Geza Pozsar also shared this news on his personal facebook (I'm not friends with him so I can't see it). I'm very curious what, if anything, his former athletes will have to say about this.

And they can stop saying he "discovered" Nadia. He did not. Marcel Duncan was, in fact, her first coach.
 
RIP Karolyi Bela. My condolences to Marta, Andrea and all his students. Wonderful message from Svetlana Boginskaya. He even discovered Daniela Silivas.
 
I'm listening to a podcast series called Hahnacity by two cousins (Laura Hahn-Segundo and Joy Hahn-Silva) who were top junior gymnasts in the late 1980s. What a fascinating perspective. I always wanted to hear from the non-Olympic gymnasts who trained at Karolyi's and Dynamo Gymnastics at that time.

As kids, they lived extraordinary lives - moving from their S. Cal homes on their own, training with such focus. But it pisses me off that coaches didn't look out for them. They were pushed to overtrain, got injured, and their gym careers were way too short. Totally because of bullying coaches who viewed gymnastics as a little girls' game.

I don't think he really decided. I think he was careless. His initial post stated when the violations happened, although he took that one down because it ended up with a lot of misinterpretation of what he was trying to say.

Two of his violations were while he was at competitions, so he was failing to update his location during competitions. One was right after he did not make the team in Paris and he was not at the location he said he would be. Here is a screenshot of the portion of the previous post with the relevant info.

He says in his statement that he knows it's 100% on him and that he chose to accept the suspension without appeal because he knows that it was his responsibility to be clear about his location.

But I don't think he was just like "deciding to not give his whereabouts." I think most likely he was being careless about something that athletes cannot afford to be careless about.

I guess my perspective is that being careless about something this important is a decision. Not a big difference.

I mean, maybe for you? Not everyone's brains work the same. We're all responsible for the consequences of our own actions in the end, but I don't think it's fair to make such a generalization.
 
I'm surprised about the whole not updating whereabouts during a competition. I mean, you'd think the drug testers would need to know who was in competition because it can impact what is allowed. Seems like double work on the athlete for each of them to provide whereabouts when the competition organizers could just provide one list.

USADA manages so many sports, I don't think it's realistic for them to keep track of every single possible competition happening all over the world in every sport. The athletes are responsible for inputting their competitions so that out of competition testing can be scheduled appropriately.
 
I'm just suggesting that once the competitors have checked in, there should be a way for competition organizers to submit the whereabouts en masse.
 
He did mention that he'd passed all his tests during those two competitions so why didn't that count for the testers while he was away? That part confused me a bit but I give him a lot of credit for owning up to his mistakes and facing his punishment head on.

In competition test and out of competition tests are not the same thing. Many athletes taper off of performing enhancing drugs in order to test clean at competition. As a result, random out of competition tests are needed when the athlete is not prepared.
 
Did he mean he passed by the drug testing stations without taking the tests? Because how do you miss a test if you passed it. He must have meant he left without stopping at the station. Or did he mean he was not at home (where he said he’d be) because he was at competitions and would be tested there?. In which case, why did he not notify the testers? I guess it could be 2 testing authorities and he should have known that.
 
The random tests that he missed are not part of competition test. You list where you'll be, and they can show up to test you at the location on the list whenever. (I don't know if there are rules like not after xpm or not before yam.)

If you list/update your location to a competition, they won't show up where your previous calendar shows and call it a no-show when you're not there. I have no idea if they'd follow the person to the competition and test them anyway, regardless of whether they were chosen for a competition, but I can't imagine it would be worth their while, time or expense-wise, unless they are on a mission and/or it's local/closer to them. They could just show up after you return.

As I mentioned, in competition tests cannot be substituted for out of competition tests. He was tested at the competition and he passed those tests, but they do not count for out of competition tests because those are different. He failed to update his whereabouts that he would be at competitions, so USADA scheduled him for out of competition tests, which he missed because he was not where his location said he'd be.

They would not follow them to the competition. They go where you tell them you will be and, if you are not there, it is a violation. Full stop. Testing an athlete at a competition would also not fulfill the goals of a random, out of competition test since athletes know they will be tested at competitions and athletes who are doping will taper to avoid testing positive.
