2024–25 Canadian Women: News and Updates

If I've got my calculations right, I think this puts her 5th on the GP alternates list after Elyce Lin-Gracey, Sarah Everhardt, Lara Naki Gutmann, and Ahsun Yun.
No, for singles & ice dance it is only the medalists at Challengers that are added to the GP Alternates list or, if they're already on it, their CS score from this season bumps them up the list.

I was rooting for Shiryaeva to medal so that she would be added. As it is, that's a very good score - would have had her #28 on the SB list last season. And, yes, it most definitely would behoove Skate Canada to get her out to a 2nd international this fall. She very easily could win Canadians.

Danafan, thanks for posting the links to the programs.

Last year, Uliana's programs seemed to lack speed and precision, although she could do the jumps. To me, if seems that this year those two areas are much-improved. In the short program, especially, the difference in speed compared to last year is very noticeable.

I finally got around to watching Shiryaeva's programs from the Denis Ten Memorial. Wow! She's like a completely different skater from last season.

She still has a ways to go in terms of presentation, particularly not looking down at the ice so much, but she's definitely making much more of an effort at engaging with her music and choreo. Her jumps were strong and powerful, her speed looked dramatically improved, and she had some fast & well-centered spins. These 2 programs could have won Nationals last year. (Not that last year was the greatest year, but still.)

From the Coaching Change (pinned) thread:
Kaiya Ruiter’s ISU bio now lists Tracy Wilson and Brian Orser as her coaches (Paige Aistrop who also coaches at the the Cricket club was with her in Astana KAZ for the CS Denis Ten Memorial and was listed with her in Skate Canada’s pre-event press release): http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00107952.htm

ETA: Her National Team profile on Skate Canada’s website still lists Scott Davis and Jeff Langdon (in Calgary) as her coaches.
Ruiter's National Team profile Coaches line (upper left corner) has since been updated to Tracy Wilson, Brian Orser: https://skatecanada.ca/high-performance/kaiya-ruiter/

I just noticed that Kara Yun's coach is listed as Lee Barkell in Skate Canada's JGP Wuxi press release and her NextGen profile also lists him and not Joanne McLeod.

I posted about this in July during the next gen competition.

good for kara yun! the switch from mcleod to barkell is improvement x infinity

McLeod is a terrible coach for jumps especially women’s skating. They get called for UR consistently. I really don’t know why anyone would go to her.

Honestly, I preferred last year's FS from Shizas, this new one is OK, but the music is dreary and I thnk she performs so much better with more uplifting music, like the sublime SP she just did here. Also, her costumes this season, esp., her SP dress, are the most gorgeous and suit her much better than any of her previous costumes. Hopefully, she can get everything working as it should, for her GP events! Go Maddie!

Because parents are dazzled by her record of national and international medal winners. And she also has a history of convincing parents and skaters that she can do a lot better for the skater than the skater's current coach can.

I was told by a parent at the Canadian Nationals in 2018 that she wouldn’t take on any new skaters anymore that weren’t Asian. Not sure if it was true or not.

^^^ Uliana Shiryaeva is Russian. ;)
As I said that was 2018.

It’s a much different situation for Russian skaters since the ban and Russian skaters are going anywhere they can so they can continue to compete.
Given the incredible success of female Russian skaters in the last decade or so, I can easily believe any coach would accept a female Russian skater if they can compete for their coaching nation.

@chantilly I think she will take any skater whose parents are willing to pay for her coaching and who won't question her too much.

I don't know if this is still her practice, but it was very rare for her to take on a new student herself. Usually if a skater wanted to work with her (or their parents wanted the skater to work with her) the skater would be assigned to one of the secondary coaches at the rink, so they could "prove" that they were a hard worker, willing to listen to instructions, etc. And then she would only take them herself after that, if she thought they had "potential".

As you might imagine, this led to a lot of very unhealthy situations at the rink as skaters tried to outdo each other to get McLeod's attention.

Question out of nowhere (but I need to know). Singer Patrick Watson is said to have an Olympian figure skater sister but I cannot find anything about who she might be. Anyone has a clue?

Would that be Jill Watson? She was an Olympic bronze medallist with Peter Oppegard in 1988.

Cory Watson was a singles and pairs skater in the 1980's. There's also a Pamela Watson who competed in ice dance. (3rd in junior dance in 1987)

Results book

Pamela Watson was from CPA Pointe-Claire, near Montreal, and Patrick Watson grew up in a small town near Montreal. With the age differences that Patrick mentions in his bio, and the age that someone would have been to be competing as a junior in 1987, she seems to be the most likely candidate.

So Reese Rose picked up a silver at Nice, but based on the short program as the free was cancelled due to extreme weather.

She skated well and improved her CTES but will be just shy of the jr worlds minimum if I did my math right. An unfortunate situation and I hope skate Canada will get her another assignment.
Aleksa Volkova was 8th after popping her flip to a double.
