War in Israel

I want to be very clear - I don’t condone violence and I think the way in which Hamas is acting is horrible. I feel really sorry for all the innocents caught up in this (in Israel and Palestine). But if you want to make a Russia/Ukraine comparison - Palestine is Ukraine.

I am sick of the notion that Israel (the government) has done nothing wrong, they are a settler-colonial state and have and continue to be involved in ethnic cleansing. It’s horrendous that this country that came up in the wake of the Holocaust uses similar tactics to the Nazis circa 1930s.

I believe that people have the right to fight back against an oppressor. Talk about peace treaties all you want - do you think the Israeli government would agree to anything that was actually fair to the Palestinians? Would they let Palestine become a country and give them a fair share of land? They’ve disregarded every partition of land and continued to encroach on Gaza and the West Bank. This is what incentivises people to join organisations like Hamas, to have no sympathy for the everyday civilian.

Palestine is Not Ukraine. Palestinians (not the people) have resorted to violence, or supported violence against Israel. Ukraine never attacked anyone, and they fought only to defend themselves against Russia, which wants to grab Ukraine's territory .
I don't understand why this comparison is even mentioned.

Oh, gosh....
You all have no idea how tiring this is. Being an Israeli means hearing same things over and over and over again for decades... Some things are debatable, some are true, some are false, each one of us picks his position eventually. But what really is tiring, is no matter in which context the word "Israel" appears, there's always someone who thinks his original, unique and important opinion must be heard by these who just didn't realise how wrong they are!!!; and all each one of us can think that moment, and I believe I'm talking for all of us right now, is "Oh, great, another one...."

Netanyahu's practices and policies have harmed everyone. And yet somehow I think Hamas has given him exactly what he wants. What a horrible price so many have paid and will pay for this. Hamas must be eradicated. I did see this post from Germany:

No, he didn't. This is an absolute nightmare for him politically, even if we assume for a moment he really lost all human in him and not shaken like all of us. No matter how badly the intelligence, army or whoever screwed up, he was in charge for the last 16? years, and this attack came on his watch and in many ways thanks to his policies. I wouldn't go as far right now as to say he's the only one to blame, or even that this position is going to be universal, but it's going to be very very very difficult for him to leave this looking decent.

And yeah, you'll see how quickly this support vanishes once inevitably IDF hits a school or something in the upcoming week. And for once I don't even have any "they should have...". It's going to be some depressing and very difficult couple of months.

Polite request: Can the political posts go in one of political threads instead of this thread, which is focused on updates about the war? Thanks for considering it.

I wish I had more than thoughts and prayers to offer to those affected by this war, but that's what I've got. You're all in my thoughts. Praying for this to end as swiftly and peacefully as possible.

Anyway, my brain is at 10% capacity right now, but I think this hasn't been mentioned yet?

US sends a carrier, submarines and some more intimidating weaponry, so I assume I'm going to have some fun action in the window soon. At first I was kind of confused what for, but it's pretty obvious - doubt any of these is going to be used, but they are clearly set here to prevent Hezbollah or Syria from getting involved, which is great news and really a huge help. I kind of assumed they won't anyway, but better safe than sorry and I've been wrong several times before.

On each account, Israel is getting the northern border as safe as it's possible, and probably will start a ground offence within a couple of days, according to my calculations. Not looking forward. The goals are quite unclear, but given the circumstances, it's not easy to have any, really.

The news analysts in the U.S. agree with you and seem to think it's largely a show of strength and warning to would be agitators.

My first time logging in this thread. I’ve been crying all weekend. My friends are all being called up - those with multiple young kids, those with pregnant wives. Please pray for safety.

Are there organizations or something where people can send or do something for the people of Israel-like the suggestions or links we've had for Ukraine?

I'm always at a loss on how to help or show support to actual relief efforts.

Please donate to Magen David Adom (Red Cross equivalent). There are friends in many countries - ie Canadian Friends of Magen David Adom - they are on the ground and treating casualties.
I’m not sure where to donate for the inevitable Gazan casualties that won’t end up in Hamas’ pocket

Is there a link to donate?

In addition to MDA, here are some other orgs active in the war response:

Jewish National Fund- very active in the communities in southern Israel, they are on the ground helping with transportation, emergency housing, personal supplies and mental health for those evacuating from areas under attack, supplying fire and rescue equipment, and will help rebuild when the fighting is over: https://my.jnf.org/donate-today/Donate

Hadassah - supports Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, which is treating many attack victims: https://hadassah.gospringboard.com/secure/israelatwar

American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee - on the ground in Israel, aiding the emergency response: https://donate.jdc.org/give/525516/#!/donation/checkout?c_src=ISRAEL23SU&c_src2=Link

Do you know the percentage of donations go to administrative costs and how much goes to the victims?

There are some Israel solidarity rallies and gatherings being planned in several cities. The ones I'm aware of:

Boston - tomorrow/Monday at noon, Boston Common
Miami - Tuesday, 6 pm, Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial
Wash, DC - prayer vigil at Adas Israel Congregation (Quebec St, near Cleveland Park Metro), Tuesday, 7 pm, it will also be livestreamed here: https://www.adasisrael.org/vigil-for-israel

(I didn't watch the news tonight but I'm reading that there were quite a few pro-Hamas rallies today. Sickening but unfortunately not surprising.)

There was a pro-Hamas clip in Tampa that I've seen circulated all day today.

I live on Miami Beach and my husband is Israeli, so I really want to attend Tuesday night.

The protest organizations have been working to evacuate and find places to stay for people from the south, and to get them and our soldiers supplies. Donation link (international) if anyone wants to support what they're doing: https://beactive.co.il/project/73912

This is a grassroots, volunteer effort. I've donated through the Israeli link.

The kibbutz where I grew up is hosting hundreds of people from a kibbutz in the south. They're all set - it's not their first rodeo - but I just thought I'd share. Very proud of my kibbutz ❤️

I’m looking into this. A lot of front-line organizations are not set up for foreign donations. I’ll suggest some alternatives soon.

As to the larger political discussion, just no. Or not here. This is from a thoughtful scholar of the region about the morality of context and so on. Please read it, it’s short and no paywall.

ETA: now I’ve read people’s suggestions for donations. To be blunt, the Jewish National Fund (JNF) is complicit in expropriating Palestinian land in the territories and is very controversial nowadays. I don’t recommend.

The Joint Distribution Committee and American Friends of Magan David Adom are apolitical and trustworthy. The local link @MsZem posted is fine, just no charitable tax deduction because they don’t have an overseas donation setup if you care about that.

If you prefer more targeted donations, my old organization is supporting efforts to keep extremists from violent provocations in mixed Jewish/Arab cities, care for the most marginalized and mental health services: https://secure.nif.org/a/we-need-yo...s-history?ms=website?ms=homepg jumbotron hero

American Friends Service Committee: it’s hard to help Gazans without helping Hamas but I trust the Quakers. Doctors Without Borders also works in Gaza.

And the ONLY Israeli organization working against all odds for Gazan rights in both war and peacetime is Gisha - I know them and their director and they are so brave.

Hope that helps.
