2023-2024 Rhythm dance

The other day Flores/Desyatov posted a reel of them skating to Smooth Operator (a TikTok remix). They didn't confirm it was their RD music, so I won't put it in the official thread just yet. The language was actually a little confusing -- Bella posted that it was a sneak peek at their RD but then added "Comment if you want an RD reveal," so I'm not sure exactly what she was getting at! 🤷‍♀️

She’s been posting lots of clips with various 80s songs that isn’t their music. I hope they post their real music soon! I’m also glad they’re not skating to “I Love Rock and Roll” which she said they considered. I haatttte that song.

There is a version of Smooth Operator being used by lots of creators to increase their chances of views.

I appreciate the optimistic music ideas here, but real talk-- you guys know we're going to end up with a plethora of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince programs, right?
Real talk, no matter what these skaters choose, more than half the PBP threads will complain about the music and make suggestions as if their music choices wouldn't get the same reception.

This x100000000%.

Every year it's the same - no warhorses - gives us new, fresh music choices.

Skaters - Ok - here's a non-warhorse piece.

FSU PBP - Barf. That non-warhorse program is awful.

I don't mind people complaining about music, and I definitely do it too. I think it just becomes a lot when the whole thread becomes that, but that's okay. I rather read and encourage those posts than stifle anybody's speech. I just wish people who complain about music and then make their own suggestions as to what skaters should skate to instead were more aware that their personal tastes in music aren't universal and shouldn't pretend that it is.

And this is NOT a dig to any one poster in particular, and I am very guilty of behaving this way too. I'm just thinking out loud.

tbh that sounds more like a pbp thread problem than a me problem

And I think it will be justified.

The '80s had so, so much glorious cheesiness and genuinely great music that these skaters are straight up ignoring. I'd love to see programs to Cyndi Lauper (seriously how have I not heard of a program to her music yet?), Blondie, any of the hairmetal one hit wonders, Depeche Mode, Run DMC, later Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks solo, David Bowie or Duran Duran. And yet despite all that great music we're just going to get a boring mix of the top 3-5 artists of the decade... Hopefully someone at least has the sense to do a Queen program.

And the cheese fests that could come out of programs to Right Round, Take on Me, Never Gonna Give You Up, I'm Gonna Be, etc. would be downright legendary!

It always seems like ice dancers are given an exciting theme - hip hop, musical theatre, etc and find the single most boring way to do it. Every time. Well, the single most boring or dumb way (looking at you Rhumba Bowie).

Ice dancers might be more daring if
  • judges didn't mingle in music choices (and consider themselves as musical authorities ; this is not what scores should be about)
  • ice dance wasn't so obsessed with imitating what has worked or been done / judges were rewarding novelty

Right now, most teams vie for the lowest common denominator programs.

I can't watch the Great British Sewing Bee from here, but there's former art-teacher-turned-yarn-dyer-and-patch-worker named Stuart who runs a haberdashery shop and who, with his friend, a current teacher named Ting, does a post-game show every week. (He also does a separate show with a master tailor and coutourier who goes deeper into the design and construction methods required to meet the challenges and shows how to do them. His YouTube channel is Woolpatch.)

As former and current teachers, they are especially cranky at the vagueness of many of the briefs, which they consider ungradeable by any fair standard, and they often criticize the judges for their prejudices and narrowness that allows them to dismiss valid responses to the brief for some contestants and ignore the requirements for others, making a link between the two problems they see.

Episode 5 was "inspired by", and the made-to-measure challemge was "inspired by Surrealism" (or surrealism, which wasn't clear.)/ One of them commented that it was so broad -- and, of course, done under time pressure -- that the contestants defaulted to the most famous image of Surrealism, the eye.

So I immediately thought of almost every discussion we've had about music choices and.limitations of the judges.
