2022–23 Canadian Ice Dance: News and Updates

Piper and Paul were incredible should have won outright, huge standing ovation and prolonged Madi chock still can`t skate no amount of political spin can change that. I hope Cananadian immigration retaliates and revoke the visas of bock and the brits let them go train with Charlie White and his 2013 coreography.

The writing's on the wall... FBSoer and FearGib will be on the podium next year in Montreal, regardless of what GilPoir do.

They haven't said, but I have a hard time seeing them not continuing for another year, especially since I'm sure the second half of this season was a big disappointment for them.
I think they will stay for sure I feel for them before the surgery this was their year they deserved to be world champions this year, They are still relatively young actually only 31 i think they can go all the way to torino.

Gilles and Poirier coming back next year almost guarantees they win worlds at home.
FBSoer will be the Canadians on the podium in Montreal. That's their hometown, which trumps GilPoir being merely Canadian. Guaranteed. But, don't you fret, I'm sure that LajLag will wind up top 6, ahead of all those non-Canadian teams you loathe save GuiFab, FearGib and HawBak.

Who is FBSoer? FearGib I know. Oh….just saw the note above. I want LaLa to do well.

Lala will finish ahead of the boring hawayek and baker who are pretty much done at this point

Much like Tessa and Scott won Worlds when it was held in their hometown (or hometown-adjacent) of London?

Nobody denies that narrative matters in ice dance, but it's a reach to say that it's guaranteed that Gilles & Poirier are going to be dumped for another team next year when they just had the biggest win of their careers this season and have the federation's support.

I do believe the Danadians have really improved though and their programs this year have really played to their strengths. I love Piper and Paul but wonder how long they put off the rest of their lives chasing after that elusive perfect end to brilliant careers.

I don't get how y'all are so easily dismissing the power of IAM. Honestly, if ChoBat decide to retire, I see all of IAM's political pull for their NA teams going into FBSoer next season. There's no way that IAM finishes up Montreal Worlds without their own Canadian team winning gold. Just watch.

I think it is way too early to speculate who will receive the push. Last season the Danadians were skating terribly and they were supposed to get dumped in favor of L/L. Didn't happen.
Yes and remember way back in September when Chock/Bates were washed up?

The Danadians are my favorite team but I’m not seeing it happening.

IAM cares about IAM. They will want one of their teams to win but I’m not sure they care which one.

Who knows? P/C or the Russian teams could be back next season too and shake things up.

On the main cbc this afternoon, Kurt and Carol strongly implying there is more to what went on with G/P than just an appendectomy. In one of the interviews Piper also mentioned personal things that happened between Skate Canada and Finland. And then a rather impassioned plea from Carol asking all “female athletes” to look after themselves and tell someone if they don’t feel well. They’re not being specific, but sounds like there’s more to this story.

It will be interesting to see what they decide to do for next season. I could see how enticing it would be to stick around for a home worlds.

This. I think 2018 shows they don't play favourites and give each team what they need to be their best. I think that is why we see so many improvements in teams when they move there to train.

My fingers and toes are crossed for Laurence and Nik. I've been onboard since the day they started skating for Denmark and it would be the cherry on top of their career as one of the original IAM teams to podium next year in Montreal. Regardless of whether Gilles/Poirier stay or not. I will NEVER understand why it's okay to have two US teams or two Russian teams either both on the podium or one close by in 4th place in case the one ahead falters but not two CAN teams, because FB/S were so worthy of that being a much tighter race after the RD and in podium position.

I wonder what sort of theme they should go for next year. Thinking back over their career they haven't really tackled a character driven piece for a FD (think their Bonnie/Clyde RD is on my list of great programs).

Interesting. They seemed happy enough with their results to my eye so that makes more sense with this in mind.

How soon we forget the goddess and the Viking who morphed into a gladiator!

The goddess and the viking wasn't a straight up character driven piece and I blame all the pearl clutching fans who claimed they were guilty of cultural appropriation for ruining it that they flipped it into some gladiator light whatever that was

Hawayek/Baker are an IAM team. If C/B retire (and they should, that was a lifetime achievement medal) H/B still beats the younger US teams and is IAM’s top American team. I’d be perfectly happy for them to share the podium with Nik and Laurence next year, G/F gets the other medal if they can stay ahead of the Brits.

I don't know if it was that, or if it was just that the program wasn't working for them. I mean, if your Viking is so vague that you can easily turn him into a Roman with just a change of music ... well, that's pretty vague.

Cultural appropriation of what? It was no worse than an episode of Vikings.
You would have to go back and search the posts for when that program first came up, not everyone got what they were doing and made some ignorant assumptions. They defended those assumptions by claiming it was their own fault it was misunderstood and stood their ground. IIRC the culture being appropriated was Native American or First Nations depending on which side of the border you were coming at it from.

I mean I loved the original program. Problem was also that as with Lajoie/Lagha (the birds) they kept a program for a second season because it didn't get out much during the original season.

But my main point in original post is I wonder how they would do with a character driven piece which I still think they haven't really done yet (aside from dabbling during the Bonnie/Clyde RD).

I wouldn’t have thought Piper an Paul planned on doing next season but now they have gone through everything they have the last four months and then having to train again to make it to worlds, maybe its on the cards? I selfishly hope they stay, but totally understand if they just want to settle down with their partners and move on. For once we have the depth to have ice dancers in top ten either way.
