2022 Skate America

yes, you literally sit by the locker room entrance and control access. your ability to watch actual competition? slim to none

Perfect. I’m submitting for this position because I want to watch what’s going on inside the locker room

Do I also get to do the patdowns? Probably need to make sure the male skaters aren’t trying to sneak in too much glitter on their outfits

Hahahaha, yeah, I didn't think you were interested in this position to watch the happenings outside the locker room!

Does anyone know if there’s a schedule or hours of operation for the shuttle from the rink to the train station?

I sent an email to SCOB to ask but haven’t received a response yet.

SCOB told me that more details and an official schedule will be available soon, but that the shuttle would be running "regularly".
Thanks! I just found the following on the SCOB site here. Hoping it means that shuttles will be frequent.

The Club is providing a complimentary shuttle service for spectators, volunteers, employees and members between the Club and the University Station parking garage at 50 University Avenue from Thursday, October 20th, through Sunday, October 24th. Multiple shuttles will run on a regular basis throughout the day. Parking at the garage is $7.00 on Thursdays and Fridays, and $3.00 on Saturdays and Sundays. (The cost of parking is not reimbursable by the Club.)

Honestly the skaters spend very little time in there generally.

I'm just going to ignore the parts of this that would get you banned from volunteering.

I find nothing funny in "jokes" about wishing to violate SafeSport rules. Just not a laughing matter, if you ask me.

Locker room monitors have a duty to protect athletes -- not an invitation to be voyeurs.
Locker room monitors are not permitted to enter locker rooms, and as mentioned above, they are responsible for allowing only athletes to enter.

💯 that whole exchange is not only creepy but I hope that if anyone knows this creep turns in his name so that USFS can put it on a NO VOLUNTEER list

I received a response from SCOB with a bit more information on the shuttle schedule, in bold below.

The Skating Club of Boston will operate complimentary shuttle service between the Club and the Rt 128/University Park Station at 50 University Avenue beginning Thursday, October 20th and concluding Sunday October 23rd. Shuttle service will begin each morning, one hour before the first use of ice, and conclude each evening one hour after the last use of ice. A shuttle schedule will be released prior to the event.

I received a response regarding ride-share/taxi demand.
We have alerted our contacts to expect an increase in demand for Skate America. We also suggest contacting your hotel to inquire about transportation recommendations- we've communicated with them about the increased demand in ride-sharing and taxi services, but hearing it from their guests will help reinforce the point.

I emailed some local taxi companies with the event schedule. I’m sure they appreciated my OCD.

Just looked at the SA parking site again. Passes for BOTH lots are now $180 and tickets for the closest lot to SCOB that is available Thursday-Sunday now go on sale October 5th. Originally the cost of the National Amusement’s lot that was only available during the actual competition was $135.

Crap. It was supposed to open tomorrow morning at 10:00 and I was going to pay $135 then. It’s highway robbery.

So a parking pass for 1 less day costs the same as the 4-day SCOB lot? WTF?
Essentially 2 days since there is practice all day Thursday and Friday and you cannot park in the other lot until 6PM on Friday. I’m sure whatever business is next door saw $$$$ signs.

Nice! Did you have to take the SafeSport training course and pay them for a background check? These things are new and the $30 for a background check, which they have done before, turns me off a bit.
I had to do the Safesport - all volunteers have to do. I didn't have to pay because I've already paid through LTS/USFS coaching. I agree that it does suck (is rude, IMO) to ask volunteers to pay for anything, including this.

They still havent asked me to do safesport yet. Maybe it's b/c on their end they can see I've already done it? Still says shift approval but nothing else yet.

Actually just got an email:

Dear Alyssa,

We appreciate your continued support with the 2022 Skate America. The shifts you requested have been submitted for final positions by the Volunteer Coordinator. After the shift selection window closes, the volunteer coordinator will be assigning volunteers to the appropriate shifts. You will receive an email, most likely, after 10/18/2022 with the details of your shift. If you have any further questions regarding volunteering for this event, please contact:

Another outrageous knee-jerk politically correct overreaction. They call it a sense of humor; you may want to try finding yours--or at least cease policing those who don't take every single remark so seriously.

I have seen many other examples of salacious "humor" on FSU, and I never had said a word about past examples.

But as someone who has spent countless hours volunteering for USFS, I object to making a mockery of a volunteer role that helps to protect athlete safety.

It's a sad statement on the culture of figure skating if taking athlete safety seriously is considered an "outrageous knee-jerk politically correct overreaction."

Bag policy has been updated. Basically the same as last year's SA and Nats: https://scboston.universitytickets.com/w/CustomPageView.aspx?pageID=7

And as someone who has managed volunteers for my club's comp for more years than I want to count, I think it's crazy, not to mention inconsiderate, that they aren't notifying vols of their shift times until the day before.

Especially considering what we know has gone on in the sport and what potentially may still be, and the purpose of background checks, SafeSport compliance, et cetera. A pain in the ass, yeah, but I was happy to do it anyway after grousing!. I've seen enough shit volunteering and being involved in this sport and had some things happen to me, it is not something to joke about...

I was already given my confirmed shift(s). Right now just 1 but I was thinking of applying for 1 or 2 more!

If anyone will be staying at/near the Fairfield Inn and would like to split parking fees to carpool (I will have my car) or split taxi fees, please PM me.

And then there is funny for few posts, then it rolls into obsession, then into creepy predatortoral behavior.

Given the history in skating, gymnastics, now soccer with sexual misconduct and sex abuse, when the "funny" comments turn to obsession and predatoral comments...no longer funny.

Everyone, everywhere has the responsibility to protect athletes (anyone really) from voyeurism. Which is a crime with penalties up to 5 years in prison in some states. It's not trivial or without harm - ask Erin Andrews.

I know - I need to get off of work on Sunday if I'm volunteering so I need to know. At least its after the tax deadline of 10/17 so I'll be fine but like I need to know either way for planning purposes

I'm coming up from NY and will not book a hotel until I know.

They risk losing volunteers because they don't give enough notice of shifts for the volunteers to be able to accommodate them.
