I would feel confident in a Vincent/Ilia/Camden team. Also, I'd love to see the skates at Worlds. I think if you take the 3 men's skating and styles into consideration, it's a beautifully balanced and interesting team. Really representative.
Also, I'm thinking of how I enjoy seeing Brendan Kerry at Worlds, Olympics, etc., even though he struggles. Why shouldn't USA skaters who also struggle (I'm thinking of Camden here) get a chance to skate on the World stage. It could even be an experience that helps him step up and deliver what he's capable of. If Jason prefers to sit this one out if asked, I support his choice. USA men will be okay; I have faith.
Always happy to see skaters I enjoy skate. But unfortunately we also need to Secure spots for that to happen. So it’s a balance.

A lot of colleges eased their rules on completing degrees with the rise of COVID. I wonder if he even had to petition to take this year off.
My understanding is that Yale gave students the option of taking a year off due to Covid restrictions and that Nathan is currently on the one year leave of absence that is normally allowed. Hence he was able to take two years off without any need to petition.

Vincent and Nathan (together with Alisa and Madison & Evan) will skate at SOI in Tokyo, which will be held during 4/8-4/10 - just a few days before the start of the US SOI.

Oh I agree. But the argument here is we should send people for the future! I don’t agree with that and I don’t think US figure skating does either which is why they sent Adam and didn’t go digging for some kid we could send for the future

Ilia scored 84.55 with a TES of 46.45 in his SP at Challenge Cup! Just needs to get through the FS tomorrow and he'll be off to Worlds with Vincent and Nathan* (or Jason or Camden, lol).

Malinin played it safe today & landed his Junior SP jumps - 3Lz+3T, 3F, 3A.

Seems about right. His PCS rose by about 3 points from each of his JGPs and his TES was 1-2 points higher with similar, clean skates.He scored 84+ without a quad?

Usually skaters see a drop in PCS when they move to senior, though I imagine that his performances at US Nationals have helped to offset that.

Bown is almost ten years older, a veteran of two Olympic and multiple World/Grand Prix competitions and the acknowledged best artistic skater in the world. Ilia needs to evolve.

Seems reasonable to me too. I think people tend to underestimate how many points skaters (even skaters not named Jason Brown) can rack up on the non-quad elements if they skate cleanly and execute all tech elements well. Ilia’s triples, spins, and footwork are all good quality. With a quad or two, this makes me think he could be in the mix score-wise with some of the more promising up-and-coming guys like Grassl, etc. I’m glad to see that.

I was surprised by the number for a still relatively unknown junior skater who had one really good competition - US Nationals is obviously pretty high profile - and no significant accomplishments to his name with that technical content.I know that!His score was also quite a bit lower that Jason's. I merely wanted to point out that it isn't out of the realm of possibility for Ilia to score 84+ without quads if his GOEs are good. Basically, what @Trillian said.

He hasn't had merely one good competition though. He had one bad SP the entire season, at his senior Challenger debut. He scored 80+ and 81+ for clean SPs at his JGPs. And he convincingly crushed the field at his 2nd JGP, which gave him a JGPF-qualifying total score ~15 points higher than any other man on the JGP. Yes, US Nats was his highest profile placement to date but let's not dismiss what he did on the JGP this fall.

At the senior level - junior events don't usually create the same sort of impression - unless you're from Sambo-70.
I think you’re right that the high profile of US Nationals helps, but Ilia also had an excellent showing on the JGP and made a great impression with that. The reason boys don’t usually transition that smoothly to seniors is because most of them are a lot more rough around the edges and don’t have the non-jump skills to keep up with the older guys. It’s not that the judges aren’t ready for them, it’s that the boys aren’t quite there yet. Ilia still has work to do, but he’s very polished for his age IMO. I think he’s way above average as promising juniors go.

I'm glad Ilia got his min. Good team around him to have him go for a simpler layout and ensure he got them, but whew boy do I hope they get him better programs next season. I cannot uber with such as he has now (and I know that's super important to him and everyone).

Yes, I’d like to see him work with Shae Lynn or some of the other top choreographers as others have suggested. But he gave stellar performances of both programs at U.S. Nationals as evidenced by the huge standing ovations he received. I would mainly like to see some more knee bend. How about a summer intensive with Massimo and Raf!? He has so much potential. The jumps are just jaw droppingly beautiful.
