U.S. Men 2021-22 season news & updates

Ilia's at it again... 4t-4lo

Let your skating speak for itself, kid!
Worth noting it took 45 minutes to get that one for the video - I wonder if the ISU will change the rules back to allow 2 repeated quads - that's the only way this sort of combo ever makes sense to attempt in competition.

Might have been done with a green screen. Anything can be added digitallly with a green screen.
And filmed by OIP's Jordan Cowan. :)

From the press release: The "2-minute spot featuring all three athletes [Mikaela Shiffrin, Shaun White & Nathan] and the campaign will culminate with the official premiere of the 2-minute spot during NBCU's coverage of the Opening Ceremony on February 4."

Cowan is incredibly talented and has changed the way figure skating can be filmed. such a different perspective that brings you into the program.

Nice. One competition. How did Ilia's other competitions go?
Really?

Malinin - quad attempts during his 3 fall assignments = 9 (remember, quads aren't allowed in junior SPs)
JGP Courchevel 1 FS - 4s (fall)
JGP Austria FS - 4t, 4s
CS Austria SP - 4z< (fall), 4t<
CS Austria FS - 4z, 4t<, 4s, 4t<

Brown - quad attempts during his 3 fall assignments = 2
Finlandia - none
SCI FS - 4s<<
IdF - 4s

And guess what? Quads weren't on the Olympic selection criteria. Nor were instagram clips.

Instagram is one thing. To pull off clean skates in competition is another. Ilia's flirting with a dangerous game here. He's going to look a complete fool if he can't skate well at Worlds - where the pressure will be much higher than it was at Nationals where the majority of people were not paying him any attention. He didn't skate clean at his second JGP and he didn't skate clean at the small CS event he attended either. Nationals is looking like the exception rather than the norm at this point.

I'd like to see a few people around him sit him down and suggest that this might be a nice time to build some goodwill among skating fans, to market himself as next in the long line of nice, sportsmanship-focused men who are well-loved. Even a few "can't wait to see the guys kill it in Beijing!" posts wouldn't go astray. Good quads and good sportsmanship would leave him with a "what's not to love?" feeling. But right now, all of this is feeling extremely passive-aggressive and it's not a good look - and while I'm not going to cast too many aspersions on a 17 year old elite athlete for being arrogant (all elite athletes have to be arrogant to reach that level and 17 year old boys are not known for their humility), I'm concerned that there is nobody around him who is doing anything other than egg him on with "yeah! you've totally been the victim of a great injustice! spend an hour chasing a tail-end 4Lo combo! that'll show them!"

Why are you so triggered to the highest levels by any skater that isn't Brown or Aaron? I'm so confused why it's the end of the world that he's showing off combinations and crazy jumps in practice. He's a teenager that is ambitious and last time I checked, most teens (and even adults) are putting things on their social media that they are proud of. I would suggest not to follow him if it makes you write entire narratives about what it must all mean.

If he goes to Worlds and finishes 35th, what does it have to do with what he's doing in practice? He's not going to look like any kind of fool either way. What if he ends up skating very well? Surely you see other skaters posting videos of their skating constantly and I am sure none of that is passive-aggressive in your eyes. There are certain skaters who post weekly videos of jumps and combinations they've done for the last 10 years. Is that upsetting?

You're attacking a 17-year old who is doing exactly what 17-years olds do - put cool stuff on their IG. But according to you, its - passive aggressive? Dangerous? Arrogant? Bad sportsmanship? Get a grip.

"Goodwill among skating fans?"

You do realize he has said not ONE word negative toward the USFS or the IC Selection Committee and their decision, right? He has been respectful and discreet about everything, including whether or not he would be sent to Beijing as an alternate or stay home and continue to train for whatever competition he is assigned to get his Worlds SP TES min.

But, never you fear about the "goodwill" he is engendering from skating fans... he's going to get plenty of it, especially when both Johnny and Tara shared that latest IG video on their own IGs. You are probably the only skating fan that he turning off with his "arrogance," and what's another four years of you railing against some 17-yr old with lots of quads (and pretty decent spins too).

Ilia Malinin Interviewed by Ted Barton at JGP Austria

The kid is acutely aware that he needs to work with "international coaches" on "other stuff" besides jumps. And no, he doesn't speak English with a Russian accent.

Incidentally, his mother made it plain in interviews back in her heyday that she did not have the skills on the second mark to compete with the likes of Michelle Kwan. The whole family strikes me as more level-headed than many posters on FSU.

What do the Instagram clips have to do with the Olympic selection? That process is over. We debated the pros & cons of the decision, and Brown is going to the Olympics. It's time for you to move on. Malinin is posting interesting combinations of jumps on social media that we've never seen anyone compete, and since there's a lack of skating until next week it's getting some attention. That's a good thing for the sport.
