Right. Beijing is just one hour ahead of Krasnoyarsk. Athletes from other sports are gathering in other cities in Siberia, such as Irkutsk. Before the 2018 Olympics, the skaters flew to a pre-Olympics camp in Japan to acclimatize. I guess that was the same logic with this camp - to get the skaters into the same time zone as the games.
Russian society is so lax about YKW in general that I don't think you can really attribute it as likely being from one particular event.that is what I was thinking. The infection came from Mishin's team to Kolyada - odds are they were picked up at Euros (or at some other place where the team member was blasé about protection) and gave it to Kolyada.
With Omicron I am so much more willing to give everyone a free pass - it is just spreading like wildfire and even at the most cautious you could have bad luck. But seeing Mishin (who I respect a lot) and his mask wearing at Euros again made my blood boil - and now Kolyada has to miss the Olympics.
co*vid sucks so so so so much.
It's just over halfway between Moscow and Beijing. Much closer to the final destination, for sure, but without taking the necessary precautions to make this a complete bubble, there was always going to be a risk that at least one athlete caught the crud from locals before they left.I didn't realize the camp site was close-ish to Beijing ... is it? The time zone issue would make sense
This. I honestly don’t know how I managed to avoid covid on my 5 trips to Russia in the last 12 months. People just don’t careRussian society is so lax about YKW in general that I don't think you can really attribute it as likely being from one particular event.
Cancel Beijing
Only when the left does it - when it comes from right-wingers it's fine. But cancel culture is bad!

Is Russia a "red state?"Russian society is so lax about YKW in general that I don't think you can really attribute it as likely being from one particular event.
They’d be smart to do the same with Eteri’s crew of the girls and T/M, who are still in Moscow. Supposedly, B/K and M/G were on the same flight as the coach from Mishin’s group that tested positive….Re Step/Bukin, Vaitsekhvskaya suggested in her telegram post that they will go to Beijing directly from Moscow.

Sorry I thought that suggested only one was from the Mishin group. Anyway I am more concerned with the unvaccinated younger skaters (the women) as this variant can be terrible, a colleague’s unvaccinated child has had a awful time.Article was posted earlier in this thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...laced-by-semenenko.109326/page-4#post-6175469
The IOC said a panel chosen by the Olympic body and China will rule on exemptions for medical or legal reasons. Examples include people who are allergic to vaccine ingredients, or who take medicines which suppress the immune system. Olympic organizers use the laws in an athlete’s country of origin as a guide to decide on exemptions.
Russian officials have estimated seven athletes — including some figure skaters — will compete unvaccinated because they are under 18 and weren’t eligible for any vaccine at home until recently.
A version of the Sputnik vaccine received government approval in November for use in children between the ages of 12 and 17 but is not yet widely available. Russia doesn’t let people under 18 receive other vaccines.
I believe that is the case, hence my concern for unvaccinated (3 Russian female skaters). Is this excerpt from a 1/21/22 Associated Press article re. how "A few unvaccinated athletes will be able to compete without quarantining" [in Beijing] accurate?
People well healed from ********* might test positive up to 6 months afterwards, even more so by the Chinese standards of PCR tests being set at 40 and not 30 or 35 in most other countries.
New CBC Sports article/discussion today (Jan. 25) titled New CV-19 testing threshold for Beijing Games only raises more questions: https://tinyurl.com/2p8c56p4They already lowered it to 35 a few days ago.
On the latest episode of CBC Sports video series Bring It In, host Morgan Campbell is joined by panellists Meghan McPeak and Dave Zirin to discuss how the new testing threshold for the Beijing Olympics could help more athletes get to the Games, but also the new questions it raises and what that could mean for athletes upon arrival.
The Omicron wave is hitting Russia. It hadn't taken off there just prior to Europeans, but now the country is having daily records again.A lot of people have been carping on how causal a lot of the Russian skating community has been about the crud. Having so many positives like this at this time does seem to suggest they were correct about this.
I think it is all a crapshoot. I haven't seen any clear, concise information that any of this shit works. I just listened to 3 people who were vaccinated, boosted, and still got Covid.I believe that is the case, hence my concern for unvaccinated (3 Russian female skaters).
I think they do have to quarantine, at least some of them. There is an article on FSU somewhere about an athlete who came to Beijing 21 days early so they would let her compete without being vaccinated. Is this excerpt from a 1/21/22 Associated Press article re. how "A few unvaccinated athletes will be able to compete without quarantining" [in Beijing] accurate?
Yes, the excerpt is from the same AP article that's linked in the pre-Olympics news thread in the Other Sports forum here: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...-news-articles-etc.108615/page-4#post-6174665I think they do have to quarantine, at least some of them. I don’t know what they told you but it has always been about getting less sick /not the severe form so you don’t end in the hospital. I know we’ve had enough of all of this and I truly hope no more Russian Olympians will get it. But gosh, they do have to follow the basic rules to help them.I think it is all a crapshoot. I haven't seen any clear, concise information that any of this shit works. I just listened to 3 people who were vaccinated, boosted, and still got *********.
We believed them for so long (whomever the "they" were) and yet, here we are. They kept saying just do this, and around that corner up ahead....it will all be great. Not so much.
My family and friends joke that I am a ridiculous rule follower....and I am. I have met very few rules I did not follow. And now.............You have got to be kidding me. In the AM---------wear a mask------------noon--------get boosted-----------5:00 forget the booster----------10:00 who knows. So how in the world do you know what to do.
A few things for sure....I would not get on a plane. I would not go to China....you couldn't pay me enough. But who knows if that is a good stand. My sister just flew from SF to Hawaii....and all is well. Now, she is crazy about getting the *****.....but flying to Hawaii was ok......cause "Well, you have to live your life". Logic at work.
If anyone had THE true and correct answer, please let me know.
yes, that is why I wrote (even in the text you quoted ;-) ) that it was either from Euros or from somewhere else by the coaches because they did not take precautions seriously as one could see at Euros again.Russian society is so lax about YKW in general that I don't think you can really attribute it as likely being from one particular event.
I agree 100% and an American skier tested positive recently and I'm still sure she's going to the Olympics. This seems ... harsh.
What's the big deal with just taking him out of the team event, letting him prepare and then travel on his own, if possible?
