The original statement is that he would do ANYTHING for love; BUT is used to contradict that blanket “anything.” Not a misuse imo — and that extra syllable is needed.
OK we've been debating the lyrics of I Would Do Anything For Love for a while. Even though I am a huge Elvis Presley fan, I never made the connection between Meat Loaf's biggest hit off of Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, to The King.
Meat Loaf memorably sang "I want you (I want you), I need you (I need you), but there ain't no way I'm ever going to love you...", but it turns out he meant the song as a tribute to Elvis' big 1956 hit I Want You, I Need You, I Love You! I can't believe that I never made this connection myself until I heard about it after Meat Loaf's death!
Meat Loaf's 1970s hit "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" had a huge connection to Elvis' "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," but with a classic Jim Steinman twist.
The original statement is that he would do ANYTHING for love; BUT is used to contradict that blanket “anything.” Not a misuse imo — and that extra syllable is needed.
