So, where does the USFS send Ilia to get his Worlds min? Bavarian Open is the same week as 4CCs but it certainly seems to be going ahead and we know the USFS has a TBD senior men's spot. Challenge Cup would make more sense if they're worried about the crud and needing Ilia for Beijing. Guess we'll see...

If there's anything we've established this week it's that they have no clear game plan to deal with anything and will be all ? when they inevitably need to replace someone for something

Really glad for Tomoki, but it kind of sucks that they didn't give Amber Glenn the same respect in the Women's assignments (same reasons for withdrawing from Nats, after all).
 
USFS investing in Jason Brown for so many years just because he is a nice guy is why things get so messy at the end. That score is a joke. He's never gotten anywhere near that kind of score internationally. People are fooled to think he is in reality so close to a bad day Vincent Zhou let alone Ilia Marinin. Marinin is not a sure given player for US. They need him more than he needs them as Nathan and Vincent are both likely to retire soon. RUS fed is probably calling him now. This is a terrible choice left and right just as the Mirai/Wagner choice was a terrible one that just led to a further dilemma four years down the road.
 
Vincent messed up at worlds, had a bad free skate at NHK (ended up second place overall on the strength of his short), had a mess of a free today. Ilia is a silver national medalist with quads and clearly able to improve in a short time. It’s possible he’ll have another chance to go to Olympics but then again it’s possible he won’t. Based on today’s reality the team should’ve been Nathan, Jason and Ilia. That said, I wish for Vincent to have great skates in Beijing.
 
This season in front of an international panel including one with Shin Amano, Vincent’s worst LP score was behind Jason’s worst LP score by 4.37 points. Vincent’s best LP score beats Jason’s best LP score by 23.32 points. Vincent’s second best LP score beats Jason’s best LP score by 12.07.
 
So, I would say that the Worlds assignment for Malinin puts to rest any talk of him switching countries, right?

I really dislike this thought process. You make it sound like Ilia just showed up and got 2nd place whereas Jason has been training for four years.

Ilia is an extremely hard worker and has been training for years at the expense of alot of other things. One does not get to be that good by just occasionally training. Just because ilia is ~8 years younger than Jason, do not discount the time and effort needed to make him that good.

I am not saying that Jason does not work hard but do not make it out that Jason worked harder and therefore deserved it more.
 
Malinin's selection for World's is dependent on him gaining minimum scores. What competitions can he go to to receive those scores between now and World's?

The USFS traditionally sends skaters to either Bavarian Open or Challenge Cup to earn mins in the winter.

Bavarian Open Jan 18-23 (we have a TBD in Senior Men on the preliminary entries list - https://bev-eissport.de/v2/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/BavarianOpen2022Entries.pdf)

Challenge Cup Feb 24-27 - this would be cutting it extremely close and there's always the concern it could be cancelled, so my guess is Ilia will be sent to Oberstdorf the week after next.

Thanks. My only issue with Bavarian Open is that it looks like the Olympic alternates (at least one) will be sent to Beijing. Is there enough time for him to do the Bavarian and still do all all the requirements for Beijing?

I have no definitive information about Olympic alternates. I am basing my assumption on who was and was not assigned to 4 Continents.

The first alternates for dance, Green and Parsons, are assigned to 4CC.

Challenge cup Feb 24-27? Did you mean January 24=27?

What's the advantage of sending him to Bavarian Cup vs. 4CC? That seems risky either way, so why not get the 4CC points and $$.?

The only logic I can see is wanting to maximize WS points for as many skaters, which is why the USFS during the Olympic season traditionally spreads out the 4CCs, Jr Worlds and Worlds assignments (as well as the Olympics ones). But it's still junky as heck, IMO.

They are still holding that ridiculous Jr Worlds Selection Camp at the end of January for the Men & Women. And, for at least Malinin, Levito, Thorngren & Seo, it's ridiculous to not name them outright since we all know they're the best choices we have for that. About the only question I have is the 2nd spot for the Jr Men (we only have 2 spots).

Here is the thing there is no guarantee anyone has four more years. In this scenario both Mirai and Polina had their moments in the sun.

I am not sure why the only way Polina deserved a chance is if she became a world medalist. Mirai never became a world medalist.

So it’s not like their decision left out a future call world medalist.

I don’t agree with body of work propping up skaters who have never shown themselves to be a world medal and Olympic medal contender.

Jason has had plenty of time to show he could compete with the best and the best and didn’t. What if Ilia has a great two years but then gets injured? This could be his only chance.

Jason got that opportunity to compete at the Olympics when he was a new senior. Why shouldn’t Ilia?

Polina never made much of an impact internationally. And her career was so short--because of injuries, of course. By 2016, it was essentially over. I think the reason some felt she shouldn't have been chosen was because she was still a junior. It meant her first senior competition was the Olympics. She was also only 15. It was a bit much to live up to, once she actually moved up to the senior level. It didn't help that she continued to be packaged like a junior, skating to things like Peter Pan.
