Was this ever proven? Seems like tge only evidence was that Kate is no longer friends with a longtime friend.

IIRC Kate's friendship or lack thereof was not the only evidence at the time. Funny how mention of it went away so fast.

I think because there was no actual evidence. But if William has been unfaithful, at least he learned from his parents' mistakes and didn't make any embarrassing phone calls about it.

Yes, there was no evidence of an affair on William's part--only suspicions--and of course he would never admit such a thing publicly. I hope that it wasn't true, for the sake of Kate and the kids.

The reason the William cheating story didn't get more oxygen is that it's very hard to feed a story if all parties are mum. The issue with Charles and Diana was that not only were both carrying on affairs, neither could stop talking to the press about it. They directly and indirectly fed their stories to the press eager for more royal gossip.
That's why the endless "protocol" stories get so much airtime -- you can always find an instance of a royal lady who broke! protocol! And! The! Queen! Was! SHOCKED!!! Whether it's Meghan crossed her legs or Kate wore wedges, you can always feed those clickbait stories.
The Meghan racist attacks are another example -- if you're determined to make an issue out of the DoS being not white, well, you can always reprint some iteration of how she's not white because she's never going to be white. Whether it's making fun of Archie being a chimp to her "ghetto" friends ... you can always print that story.

Maybe the Royals should do what Coleen Rooney (football player's wife) did when she suspected that one of her friends was selling stuff about her to the tabloids. Leak a piece of information to a single person and see where it ends up.

The fact is that the media would rather spin a story out about Meghan for weeks/months to create negativity and clickbaity BS but they rarely comment on Prince Andrew....that to me raises a lot more suspicion about just how much influence the royal family actually have on the media in this country.
There is a real story to uncover with Prince Andrew and endless debates that could be had about whether he should be turned over to the authorities in the US to answer for his crimes, whether the royal family have any rights to stop that and what that might mean constitutionally for the monarchy going forwards. But none of that has happened instead the debate that went round the houses was on whether Harry and Meghan were married the day before their ceremony, even getting the Arch Bishop of Canterbury involved. Endless analyses on privacy laws and defamation laws etc etc. when there is actually nothing to debate about Harry and Meghan.

I think we read and see so much about Meghan because beautiful young women sell newspapers and magazines. Princess Diana always got way more press than did anyone else in the royal family at the time. Pictures and articles about Prince Andrew, disliked as he is, probably just don't sell and I assume he has learned to keep his mouth shut and fade into the background. Just not the same clickbait.

You have to wonder if his 1st story was true or if his denial was true. There's a reason which of course we'll never know why Kate dropped her friend.
Maybe the Meghan/Harry situation is more relatable too. Everyone has had the experience of having a friend or family member end up with someone who feels responsible (even if they aren't) for the friend/family member pulling away and distancing themselves to some extent, so it's something a lot of people can have an opinion on and think about in a way that allows them to reflect on their own experience (which is generally something people like to do), whereas the Prince Andrew story is just sordid and awful.

We'll never know if Kate actually dropped her friend. Kate keeps her social life with her friends very private. Many friends grow distant over the years as kids and family obligations pile up.
Anyway, this is neither here nor there re: Harry and Meghan. Even if the press were to hound W&K about an affair that might or might not have happened, it's very different than the kind of racist clickbait stuff they hounded Meghan with.
Also ... as someone who fiercely defends Meghan (as you all have seen) I truly do not get why a segment of H&M fans seem to WANT this affair rumor to be true. Why would you want this to be true? It would only hurt Kate and their children, and the very worst version of the BRF behavior towards Meghan generally doesn't involve Kate, whom Meghan has clarified is a "good person."

Because at the time they were trying to sell that the tension between the brothers was not because of Meghan but because William was having an affair and Harry was angry with him.
