Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

I watched Playing God on Hulu. A trio of con artists play God to scam a grieving billionaire. The con story was fine but there are two reasons to watch it. Alan Tudyk plays the billionaire and Michael McKean plays God.

I thought Michael was extremely underused. It think it's more a limitation in the script and storyline. I didn't feel like he had as much to work with as the the other main roles. Michael did the best he could with it. He at least made the part not so boring or unbelievable. Alan proved why he is one of my favorite actors. His role is nothing like we've seen from him in a comedy aspect. He played the grieving father with a mental breakdown perfectly and carried the whole movie. Hannah Kasulka and Luke Benward are two actors I'm going to have to keep an eye on. I thought they were well cast for their roles as the "angels" running the con with God.

Alan Tudyk does not get the credit he deserves as an actor.

The Cumberbatch movie opens on Prime tomorrow ("The Electrical Life of Louis Wain") and the other Cumberbatch film ("The Power of the Dog") opens on Netflix Dec. 1 following it's theatrical release. I am a happy camper.

I am watching Maid based on all of your recommendations. Mr. Mac hated it and left in the middle of the 2nd episode. I'm in the middle of the 4th but had to stop because watching people make bad choices is not fun.

The first couple of episodes were hard to watch for me because of flashbacks to my childhood especially when my mom left my emotionally abusive dad and we were on welfare and food stamps. But it was compelling and I couldn't stop watching. I am not so sure I will keep watching though if it keeps going down the path it seems to be on right now.

Yeah. The bad choices part don’t get better but it was a nice change from what I usually watch.

It is tough to watch, but I do think it was worth it. This is one of those shows where binging works, I am not sure if people would want to wait another week for the next episode. I thought the second episode was excellent. The actress who played Alex's friend was especially compelling.

Agree with @manhn that binging works for the series.

Ultimately (having seen the whole series once and now going through it a second time with Mr. Japanfan), I would describe it as inspirational.

Lovehard is the best romcom I have seen since Crazy Rich Asians. Hardly groundbreaking but an engaging modern romcom with terrific chemistry between the two leads.

I didn’t recognize Andrea Riseborough again. She played the eldest sister in “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.” I liked learning about this eccentric artist and his family and their many challenges. Cumberbatch is good at giving us a picture of this person who thrived despite suffering from mental illness. This is on Prime.

Was feeling mindless, so I decided to watch Love is Blind Brazil. :) As I had watched the American version, I knew what to expect, I thought. This version really points up the culture and current environment in Brazil, which is substantially different from that in the US. Also, I can only think that the fashions worn by the women were more in the line of hootchie(sp?) mama and there were far more tattoo's among the Brazilian contestants. Given that there was dubbing, the affect on the contestants appeared to be more over the top. Interesting from a cultural perspective.

I have been binge watching an old Canadian series called Mayday. I am totally addicted. Most episodes are available free on YouTube. It is like a real life CSI but for planes.
I've been watching these too! The other night I binged three in a row. They are done so well with the acting and the details into the investigations. Some are so inspiring but most make me sad thinking about the lives lost.

I am half way through the second episode of “Why Women Kill” on Amazon Prime and I’m already hooked.

It is a dark comedy/drama that follows the lives of 3 unrelated couples who live in the same house during different decades, 1964, 1984, and 2019.

Ginnifer Goodwin plays the 1960s housewife and Lucy Lui is the 1980s diva.

Eventually murder comes into play for all 3 couples but I don’t know how yet.

It is hysterically funny.

Worth watching if only to see Lucy Lui decked out in 1980s fashion, hair and makeup reminiscent of Dynasty.

We randomly stumbled upon the 3rd season when it was airing on W earlier this year and loved it, so now we've gone back to start the first season. (Each season is a completely different story and set of characters, so you can watch them out of order.)

Disney+ stuff

She Hulk sneak peek

Moon Knight sneak peek

Ms Marvel sneak peek

Jungle Cruise and Shang Chi are now both available at no extra charge on Disney+ and it is also Disney+ day. Hopefully that means we will get lots of cool trailers later.
Jungle Cruise starts with an acoustic guitar instrumental of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. I have to say it shocked me to hear Metallica in a Disney movie. I don't normally associate the two.

Can someone with taste tell me if Shang Chi is good like Black Panther or if it’s like every other typical formulaic Marvel film before I waste my time? :P

It's also called Air Crash Investigation in some countries and seasons 11-18 are available on Disney+. Really fascinating how sometimes the tiniest issue can become a huge problem. Of course the famous ones that you know about - like Tenerife or 9/11 - you already know what happened and why, but trying to guess the cause of others can be interesting and the way they piece things together is fascinating.

In case you hadn't guessed, I love ACI and binge it regularly.
