Tabloid headlines I personally think are ridiculous:

1. Meagan and Kate don't get along and have caused a rift between their husbands. (They may not be best friends but probably get along well enough as SILs and will enjoy raising their families together.)

2. The Queen plays favorites and is easily offended by her GDIL's. (I think the Queen is a tough old bird who has weathered a lot and is probably thrilled to see William and Harry happy. What grandmother doesn't love the little ones?)

3. Meagan and Harry are modernizing the antiquated British Royal and family and showing everyone how it should be done. (They are doing things their way - but so have others of William and Harry's generation. Harry's children will not have the same responsibilities as their cousins).

4. I have never seen anything about Meagans race so I guess I am lucky.

This is the one I find hysterical. Harry and Meghan are not modernizing the royal family. They are basically doing what William and Kate are doing but with more flexibility because they are removed from the throne. William and Kate have expanded in what Charles and Diana did. It is all incremental. With every year Harry and Meghan get further from the throne. Yes, when Charles is King Harry will be the son of a monarch, but George will be older too. If anyone is going to send the monarchy into a tail spin it will be Charlotte. I suspect she will take after her great great aunt Margaret!

Ok - I looked up some information on the topic. So I will concur kind of.

There will always be crazy people out there. When you are a public figure it comes with the territory. Race/Religion/Ethnic background/Privilege - whatever, people will find something to hate if they want. When one looks more broadly you can see the breadth of hatred for a gazillion things. Racism directed at Harry and Meghan is kind of illusive. People have all kinds of ethnicities in their background. People did not think the Queen should be allowed to marry Prince Charles.

Just because these things have always happened or there have always been crazy people doesn't mean people aren't directing racists comments at Meghan (and sometimes Harry).

Calling someone a race traitor for marrying someone with African ancestry is racist. By definition.
 
A lot of the racism that Meghan faces is not people coming out and saying they don’t like her because of her race. It is far more insidious than that, it underlies other criticism rather than being blatant. For example, she is often criticized for having messy hair. There is a long history of black women being criticized for having messy hair when they wear it naturally — it is “unprofessional,” “messy,” “childish,” etc. I’m not saying everyone who dislikes a messy bun is racist, but there is all this subtext and context to the criticism of her that people are often wilfully or unconsciously blind to. Our concepts of what is acceptable, attractive, professional, mature and so on when it comes to appearance are really shaped by race and we often don’t realize it.

And that’s not even getting into the blatant racism online, on Twitter, in the comments sections of most news outlets, even on her own Instagram posts. And there have been credible death threats against her and Harry, and I’m willing to bet against Archie (although they of course wouldn’t make that public), just for her having the audacity to be a non-white woman who married a white man. It is there every day, in every conversation about her. It’s not always said out loud.

Thanks for the response. I don't have any social media, so I would never notice that. Do you have any information about credible death threats against them?

About Meghan's hair. As silly as this is. Her hair IS often messy, and I don't think it has anything to do with her race. Although I did not watch Suits, I have seen enough pictures of her in that role.....and her hair was not messy.

FMPOV - the criticisms about her hair being messy are valid. Wispy things hanging in front, hair sticking out of her bun, etc.

I think we can all agree: Meghan Markle can wear her hair however she damn pleases. In the past she's been partial to a bun, but has always opted for the messier variety, you know the boho chic type that looks cool and slightly lived in. Of course, she's also our inspo for glossy, loose waves - Google Meghan Markle hair and you'll see what we're talking about - basically, she pulls off every style like it's nothing.

Her hair looks good to me in most of the pictures. Some of the wisps look intentional. And it might be hard to keep a bun intact on a very windy day.

It would be interesting to do a comparison with other women who wear buns, but none come to mind at the moment.

Jeezus. There is a very long history of "messy hair" being used as a reason to discriminate against non-whites. To the point where some places in the US have passed laws making it illegal for employers to "target" an employee on the basis of how they wear their hair.

I agree there has been a long history of criticism; however, if you look also at the criticism of Kate when her naturally curly hair gets ringlets, I think it is a combination of reasons and motivations. Just because something can be racist doesn’t mean it is.

I think there is a section of the public who are absolutely racist and hate that Harry married anyone who was not an English Rose type. Then there is a section of people who just like to nitpick about what female public figures wear and how they do their hair, and yet another group who are interested in fashion and are critiquing based on what they perceive to be fashion rules and norms.

IMHO, the last group, if kept to sites like this or fashion discussion sites is fine. Famous people have access to fabulous clothing (even if they pay for it) and fabulous events because they are famous and people are going to talk about them. General discussion in the media about what they are doing (along with likes and dislikes) is also to be expected and, quite frankly, required. If people stopped talking about Meghan and Harry their usefulness to their charities would disappear.

Meghan has had her naturally curly hair chemically straightened. This is why I don’t think the hair comments are, for the most part, racist. No one is criticizing her hair in a natural state. Kate gets a ton of hair criticism when it is fly away and when she wears a hair net in her bun to keep it neat. Sometimes you just can’t win.
 
Meghan's hair is not natural. So that muddies the waters of trying to claim that anyone who notices it is racist. Honestly, I think it'd be great if she had natural hair. But she appears to not have had it since she was a child.

She also keeps it messy on purpose. Her hair stylist for her wedding publicly said that she wanted it to fall out of the bun as the day progressed. Sorry, but who the hell intentionally wants their updo to fall out on their wedding day? That's kind of ridiculous and has nothing to do with race. It likely has more to do with her publicly stated style aesthetic that it is good to have something unexpectedly messy or whatever word she used. Which is just being sloppy rather than chic.
 
I have very thick Asian hair and I too prefer the messy bun look bc I need tons of gel to make it perfectly straight without wispiness.

I don’t think that means I deserve to be shamed for my hair.

The racist comments I see are often directed towards Archie. I’ve seen so many “he has red hair, she can’t be the mother” comments it’s tiring. Yes ppl of mixed race can have red hair. Meghan did not baby-nap Scott and Tessa’s white baby.

Ever since Harry met and married Meghan, and especially since their wedding, this thread has been nothing if not all over the place wacky, revealing, sometimes off-topic, inaccurate and eye-rolling, with the occasional interesting posts, and rare challenges to some of the nonsense, ignorance, and knee-jerk repetition of the largely British negative press narratives. Carry on regulars and drop-in guests, as you will.

Meanwhile, to spice things up with some variety, perhaps Zemgirl should create her own study guide and quiz about non-British royals.
 
@canbelto, yes I have read the same comments about Archie. The first photo after his birth -why is he wearing a hat-what are they trying to hide? Next photo on mother's day - why are they only showing his feet-what are they trying to hide? Next photo peeking over the hand- why don't they show his full face-what are they trying to hide? Full christening photo-he looks white...he can't possibly be Meghan's baby.

I have a daughter with hair just like that. Her hair goes crazy in humidity. It does not amuse her.

I would love to have a messy bun.....or any kind of bun....or pony tail.....anything! I have straight baby fine hair. My hair just sits there as a constant reminder that I did not get in the line for good hair. I must have been sidetracked in the line for a good nose or straight teeth......either of which could have been fixed.

Again, I do not care how Meghan wears her hair, as long as people don't use it as a (secret) racist bash, as some people claim.
 
@AxelAnnie, yes, there is a tinfoil hat brigade in the comments section of Daily Mail and Daily Express that make racist comments. Some of them also claim that Archie is a doll or that Meghan was never pregnant and there was a surrogate, etc.

Indeed. Meghan may not have been the equivalent of Grace Kelly marrying Prince Ranier, but she was hardly an unknown. Her Wikipedia page dates back to 2006, before her work on Suits and certainly predating her relationship with Harry. Obviously, interest in her went up considerably when they started dating and spiked when they married. Kate's Wikipedia page was created in 2005, by which time she and William had been together for several years.

I don't think anybody can reasonably argue that a successful TV actress had less name recognition than a university student whose parents owned a successful, but by no means famous, business.
