Here's the video of Harry making the announcement awhile ago, standing in front of horse stalls and excitedly rubbing his hands together. Harry can barely contain himself. I'm happy for him and Meghan. :cheer2:


The live coverage continues on the BBC, as they try to parse the interest. :drama:

In the lead up to the birth of her firstborn, Meghan's Ragland uncle had provided DF with early baby Meghan photos:

Wonderful news! It’s great to hear that mom and baby boy are both doing well. I love seeing Harry’s excitement!

The announcement that Meghan was in labour came well after the baby had already been born. :D As little as we have seen of the Cambridge children, we will likely see even less of the Sussex offspring. There will be the photo-call in a couple of days, the christening likely in July at St. George's Chapel, and then during the Sussexes' planned tour to countries in Africa in October, we will get to see how the little Sussex baby is growing. But beyond that, we will likely only see birthday pictures, and occasional glimpses. May they all be happy together. I'm sure they are and will continue to be.

It was nice of Harry to come out and make the public announcement himself, clearly after having hours of time enjoying the entire experience and their new baby with Doria and Meghan. Nothing sneaky about that. ;) It's more that they plan to control their lives and prevent intrusive coverage.

BBC reporters and royal correspondents are a little peeved that the labour announcement came several hours after the actually birth :lol:. Poor things :D

Unless the Queen does anything special the little boy will be officially known as the Earl of Dumbarton as one of the lesser titles of his father. And before anyone tells me that Harry and Meghan won't or don't want title's for their children then why did Harry accept a Dukedom on his wedding day?

I'm not sure how that will work - Earl of Dumbarton is Harry's title in Scotland, not a regular secondary title.

Probably because Meghan then becomes a Duchess in her own right. Otherwise I think she would be known as Princess Henry (Princess Michael of Kent is an example of the same protocols).

^^ I doubt that was a consideration. :p William was named a duke, the Queen's younger sons were named dukes. It's how the British royals do things.

We haven't heard what Harry & Meghan want directly from their own lips, but there has been speculation and allegedly insider reports that they aren't interested in their children holding royal titles. Being named a Duke is not a royal title, btw. Harry was already a royal, and it's quite normal for him to receive a dukedom upon marrying. I don't see any reason for him not to accept the dukedom from his grandmother, the Queen. Harry's son at this point is expected to be called Earl of Dumbarton as a first born son (which is one of Harry's titles). Any daughters would be styled Lady Mountbatten-Windsor. Anyone who has followed Harry closely over the years know that he struggled with being a prince, and it is thought that he does not want to subject his children to holding royal titles, since they are so far down in line to the throne that they should be able to live relatively normal lives and not bear the burdens that royal titles bring.

Royal titles are: HRH (Her or His Royal Highness) Prince/ Princess. Those are titles that Sussex offspring will be entitled to automatically when Prince Charles becomes King, unless a decision is made (and it probably will be) for the Sussex children to not hold royal titles. Again, Sussex offspring will automatically be styled Earl (first born son), Lord so-and-so should there be a second son, and Lady Mountbatten-Windsor for any daughters.

It is standard practice for the 1st born son of a Duke to be known by one of the lesser titles of his father - and in this case the Earl of Dumbarton is probably the title to be used. Letters patent were issued to give all of Williams' children the title of Prince or Princess due to William being a direct heir to the throne.

We will have to see what happens to the titles when Charles becomes King - none of us know - even though some do like to assume they do ;)
 
^^ Just as you are stating what you know that's fairly clear according to royal family traditions, so am I. The things we don't know, we don't know, like when we were all waiting for the baby to be born and couldn't possibly know when, or what it's gender would be. ;) When statements are qualified, that's an indication of uncertainty, not assumption.

The coverage continues on the BBC, with reporters speaking to crowds forming around Windsor and Buckingham Palace, where an official written announcement is just now being placed at the BP gates.

Regarding names:
The name 'John' is trending right now, and it does have a nice ring to it.

Arthur Edwards (photographer for The Sun) was melting into mush giving an interview on the BBC. This after how he was whining and complaining so much just a few weeks ago about the way M&H decided to handle the birth privately (even being crankily quoted in The New York Times). It looks like Edwards is very much trying to make-up for his earlier fit of pique and make nice. He's acting as if he's a close member of the Windsor family. I understand he's followed the royals for many years. But his mushiness now is rather hypocritical.

Edwards is also the photographer who took intrusive pictures of Diana in a bathing suit when she was pregnant. So Edwards is part of the intrusive media that M&H are determined to keep at bay. Edwards backtracking and falling all over himself trying to praise Meghan now in his comments, will not change anything. Similar somewhat contrite behavior is happening among some of the other royal reporters (particularly after seeing Harry's happiness and his generosity in sharing the news himself). We'll see if the media actually consistently changes their behavior toward reporting on the Sussexes as time goes on. IMO, the die has already been cast by most of the media's largely negative treatment of Meghan throughout her pregnancy.

Meghan's father has released a contrite, congratulatory statement as well. I could never forget, possibly never forgive Markle Sr's disgraceful words and actions (after Meghan and Harry had tried their best to include him in their lives). But of course, I'm not Meghan and it's unclear what will happen in the future regarding her family relationships.

In any case, it's rather late now for Markle's contrition. Markle Sr could have been right there along with Doria, witnessing the baby's birth. I doubt he will now play much of a role in this child's life. At this point, perhaps there will be some kind of cautious reconciliation, but only if Markle Sr never opens his mouth again to the media. And he has a lot to prove in that respect.

I've read enough romance novels to know how it typically works, but again - these are not typical titles. Charles, William and Harry all use their Scottish titles when in Scotland.
 
Congrats to Meghan, Harry and their families! (Thanks to all the goddesses of childbirth I now no longer feel compelled to google Meghan Markle twice a day for baby news.)

I nominate Charles Philip Dorian as a potential name. I can't think of a masculine version of Diana or Elizabeth.

Well I wouldn't rely on romance novels to give you the answers here to be honest :D However several royal historians have been interviewed and are already referring to the child as Earl of Dumbarton. I guess Harry will use the Duke of Sussex title whilst in Scotland from now on. It's been a while since we had a royal Duke have a son - not including William here - so the title usage isn't as well known as usual.
 
I'm assuming they announced labour after the actual birth because they said they were going to, but then it happened overnight so likely didn't have all their social media team online and ready to go :)

Now I'm all about names, can't wait to hear!
 
What a joyous occasion!! I certainly do not blame Harry and Meghan at all that her father is not involved as he certainly has made a terrible hash of things, he and the others. I come from a family where it became necessary for our own sanity to withdraw and now since my mother is gone, I only have contact with one cousin. My husband comes from a large, close family and sometimes that is hard for me, although it has been this way for many years. I wish it could have been different but it couldn't and I am so glad my life story is not that interesting as I am sure they would love to do a tell-all.

As for the baby's titles, I guess the BRF website will let us know soon enough...

ETA: I was looking up everyone's various titles and found out that Prince Edward was recently made a Scottish earl in addition to being the Earl of Wessex: he is The Earl of Forfar.

:lol: Thank the Lord God above, Meghan really doesn't have to attend. She will be on maternity leave, and also quite busy I am sure, taking care of her newborn son in his first weeks of life. As all parents know, that can be a busy and an exhausting time. :saint: :cheer2: :yawn:

I doubt Harry will attend either. Not that I know for sure, of course, but I'm just sayin' and prayin'. ;)

It's also expected that Prince Edward will be honored with his father's title (Duke of Edinburgh) sometime after Prince Philip passes away. I read that the title would first go back to the crown, and either the Queen (or Prince Charles if the Queen is no longer here) will then award it to Prince Edward, as it is not an inherited title.
