From the arena - I was totally blown away by Katsalapov. I never really got the hype before. Whatever my or anyone else opinion of him as a person, he is one extraordinary ice dancer. And Sinitsina was no slouch either. If her skating is not as good as his couldn't tell. They flew across the ice with intricate steps, tango flavour, the most cohesive choreography. I mostly watched him I admit - his expresssion and speed, his perfect foot placement in intricate steps. Okay I'll stop raving. For my money they were easily the best of the field. I kept waiting as the others skated for another team to be as smooth and riveting. Didn't happen.

I agree! I'm starting to become a S/K stan if I'm being honest, which I never thought would happen in a million years. I prefer them by a mile to Stepanova/Bukin.

Totally agree.
I remember that he was magical with Elena when I saw them live at Euros 2012.
Their speed and agility was just draw dropping, they were just yummy!

Then in contrast it was disappointing at first to see him with Vika as she was young and had a lot of catching up to do.

However now I take my hat off to them for taking the total humiliation of the last 2 seasons, and not giving up, but instead working their butts off to reemerge like butterflies! :respec:

I think Vika has caught him up, they are on the same level. For me they are now a well matched, well rounded team who pleasantly surprised me when I finally saw them live in Grenoble.

Casting aside any feelings about his personal off-ice behaviour/character, it would be great to see them win this final, but reputation judging will most likely deprive them of that win even if they skate lights out!

Also IMO S/K have better overall basic skating skills than S/B, so it was surprising to see that the RD PCS indicates that the judges think they are on a par.

It is a shame too that Bestemyanova keeps putting out 'controversial' press releases. It is not doing S/B any favours! The high volume of negative comments from Russian fans, under her latest press release, clearly indicates she would be better to keep quiet! Better to let the skating do the talking!!

The team I most want to see on the podium is the Italians. They have fought against all the odds. Marco is the hardest working skater you can imagine, and Charlene is happy to go along with that. So they have got to where they are through sheer hard work and determination. They so deserve any success they get now!

So exciting to see how the FD pans out :watch:

What's that nutcase ranting about ?

Using the best translator I could

Olympic champion Natalia Bestemyanova commented on the performance of Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin in the rhythm dance in the Grand Prix finals in Vancouver (4th place).

“A very difficult situation with the technical specialists, they dropped Stepanov and Bukin from second to fourth place with one stroke of a pen. There are grades for the compulsory elements of the program, and Stepanova and Bukin received a basic level for the first series of the tango, that is, zero. In order to get such an assessment, they had to stand on two legs and do nothing at all. This is nonsense, this is just hooliganism.

And in fact, they skated perfectly and greatly improved compared to previous competitions. Their assessment can not be so and the level can not go down so much compared to previous competitions.

They have a small lead and their free program, in my opinion, is the best of all competing this year. They don't have the best starting number, but, I hope, technical specialists will not forget their skating, when they evaluate the strongest workout, ”Bestemyanova said.

Thanks, taz'smum ... yeah, somebody is definitively very, very miffed!

Thank you. :)

 @hooliganism
They didn't hit the key points. It happens.

the level can not go down so much compared to previous competitions.

Yeah, it can, nutty. :shuffle:

I need to see P&C again cause I'm not sure about their RD. But as of now, as a program, I like S&K the best.

They have improved significantly because Victoria is able to keep pace with him, when she's actually able to dance with him and match him artistically, it will look even better. For right now when I watch them I see great speed but little soul. I see most noticeably a proud peacock and his partner, because if both of them were giving it like Katsalapov last night, they would have had the lead by a wide margin, but they're not quite there yet. They remind me of Averbuch and Lobacheva, good but just not my style. I prefer the stylings of my Andrew Poje :fan::smokin:and Cizeron any day of the week. But good luck to them :).

Agreed!

S/K are strong imo but if we talk "details" or "styling", K's suit messes up with his line. The "flying tails" (;)) are totally distracting!

I noticed that too. It looked the same he had in Sochi. And he's still a bit wild with those twizzles, but it kinda suits to a tango so it doesn't look that bad.

Really, to me, it doesn't spell tango at all  ...

I know what you mean, because it doesn't have that control that Tango should have, no matter how strong and passionate it is. But on the surface it can be sees as "passionate".
Though, on a second thought, might suit to Flamenco more than a Tango.

Exactly ... a bit messy for a tango. Anyway, he manages to pull it off. They were both impressive.

On a logical level, I understand this: it’s not fair to judge what someone does based on something else entirely. But for me personally, as a matter of taste, I cannot always separate a person from their work-product. I can’t, for instance, comfortably enjoy the acting work of actors who have been revealed or credibly rumored to be abusive or creepy; it’s the same for me in sports. That’s not to take away from their skills in that arena, but only to say it is always tainted for me. I can acknowledge the skill without being a fan.

Also, can we not entirely rewrite history? Nikita, like Elena, was always a bundle of raw talent but unreliable to the extreme. His twizzle disasters have been some of the most hilarious fails I’ve ever seen. Kudos for getting them under control, but the consistency and brilliance hasn’t always been there.

I'm not concerned about Nikita's personality or even really his break-up with Ilinykh as much as I loved them, because bad break-ups happen in dance/pairs, but I am concerned about the rumor about what happened in New Jersey (?). However, I also don't want to judge purely based on a rumor without knowing whether there is substance behind it. It's very difficult because it has never been clear to me whether this is substantiated or not. Even posting about it makes me uncomfortable, but it is definitely holding me back when it comes to this team.

And delusional.
She was very vocal a few years ago as well, pushing for S/B. I can't remember all the details, but she was complaining that S/B weren't getting the score they "deserved," and in her opinion they were the only "true" ice dancing team. I guess the rest of the teams were just poseurs.

Oh yes. I remember that very well. She was hammering I&Z on every turn. TAT was often backing her as well. ;) But TAT is TAT. :p I can't get mad with her even when she is biased. At least she hasn't completely gone on the nutty side. :D

By the way, is it just me or I'm liking almost all RD's this season. Am I wrong or this year we have quite a lot of good programs?

Thanks Armantide. So I wasn't hallucinating, just wish I could remember the details:confused: BTW, I'm drawing a blank: who are I&Z?

Oh, If go and dig on Golden Skate, I'm sure I can find all the discussions we made, back then, about her statements. You're not missing anything though, the usual Besti.

I&Z (Elena and Ruslan). At the time they were S&B's direct rivals and Bestie was going hard after them. After Elena in particular, spreading rumors about a lot of things too. :slinkaway I bet she will do the same with S&K, if they finish above S&B here. lol
