Emmanuel Savary shared this photo of the Midwestern Senior Men's podium (1st-4th: Jordan Moeller, Savary, Ben Jalovick, Andrew Austin): https://www.instagram.com/p/BqTWy18nlfo/
I Fractured my foot three weeks ago but I’m so happy I was able to push through and make nationals. Now time for some much needed rest. Congratulations to everyone that competed #nationalsbound
Despite his injury, Savary was able to land a 4S++ in his Mids FS.

Not to minimize her to her looks, but I think Liza is so beautiful. I’m glad she’s a world champion. Someone like her is a total :glamor:.
.

Am I the only one who thinks she looks like Johnny Weir in drag (or natural whatever)???? She is beautiful and that video shows her being much funnier than she would seem on the ice.

I'm just stuck on this eternally

He got over 50 TES without a quad

He's not just leading on PCS he's leading on technical content because he did it so well!

96. One quad. That's all he'd need. One nice, beautifully landed quad and he'd be over 100 and he'd deserve every single point of it.

Loved, loved, loved that short since the first time I saw it. And for time to skate it so well, wow!

The long does not give me the same warm fuzzies.

True that...Right now his best quad is quad sal...he opened with a triple sal which I guess is where the quad goes but it looks like it was deliberate so as not to take a chance. There were doubles tacked on here and there so he is still a work in progress. We will see at nationals. His aim for this yr was to get back on the world team. fingers crossed. Go Jason

Jason opened his FS today with a 2A and moved the planned 3S to be the 3rd jump element after the 3A+2T. It looks like the unintentionally doubled jumps in the FS were the toe loop after the 3F (planned 3-3, I assume, unless it was supposed to be after the opening 3A?) and the final Lutz.

ICYMI, I posted the link to a recent Jason interview article in his news thread (as well as his fan thread): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...icles-latest-news.102845/page-52#post-5468056

He opened with a 2A. The sow was his 3rd jump. And the doubles "tacked on here and there" were pops not placeholders, but maybe that's what you meant.

@DreamSkates I think the reference to 80 years olds is rooted in his choice of music. It's one thing to pick your music from the oldies catalogue, but it's usually more effective if it's a piece that is at least still enjoyed across generations. Simon and Garfunkel still have an audience, but aside from a few hits, that audience is mostly older people who listened to them when they were young. Unlike other artists from the 60's and 70's, S&G are not a group that has captured the younger generation.

(Apologies to S&G fans but that's how I see it. I don't dislike S&G but think this was a wretched music choice for Brown.)

I think some of their songs are timeless but Jason's music selections aren't those pieces.

Okay, I get it. I do agree that the first part of the free program music is slow and uninteresting. Although I have known a few 80 year olds who are very interesting and still feisty.
This year when Jason skates, I pay less attention to the music except for the last part of his free program when the energy kicks up a notch.

Re-posting this post about Nathan here from the IdF Men's FS play-by-play thread (last sentence bolded by me):
Watching Chen I can't help but compare him to Kevin Shum who also is balancing school [M.I.T. full-time] and skating. I remember last few years (when he competed ) Shum managed to keep the jumps for the most part but didn't really have time to work on spin levels or speed or power. But having good programs helped Shum out. Watching Chen I got the same feeling. Chen may keep his jumps but the spins, footwork and speed may sometimes take a hit. Luckily the low levels in the sp might have worked as a wakeup call and his levels in the lp were ok

Still major props to him for balancing competing and Yale.

I guess 'Sound of Silence' is one that has captured the younger generation ;)

But I agree, of all of their songs, the ones used for Jason are not my favorites.

Yes, the two songs that are probably the most contemporary are Sounds of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water, since they have been covered by contemporary artists (e.g., Disturbed and John Legend, respectively).

The Vamps and Shawn Mendes recently did a cover of Cecilia. That one had a nice change to it. It wasn't an exact cover but it had enough flavor of the original song with their own stuff thrown in.

To be honest, I would not associate Bridge Over Troubled Water with John Legend. I think Elvis Presley first. I asked my roommates and they agreed (we're all university age). But it's definitely a song lots of young people know.

@YukiNieve had asked about Scott Dyer in the U.S. Sectionals thread last week - he has retired from competitive skating at the age of 27 and currently seems to be busy and happy in the San Francisco Bay area in his new career as a SoulCycle instructor. I wanted to share his "sappy" heartfelt Instagram post he recently wrote re. the "grieving process that occurs when you consciously walk away from something that was your entire life for twenty beautiful years": https://www.instagram.com/p/BqTHk_SHEIu/

Scott was always one of my favorites to watch for his style, musicality and spins ever since I saw him compete at the lower levels in area club competitions and at his first "big" Nationals at the Novice level in 2006. He never got to compete internationally as a senior/junior but he did represent Team USA at 2006 Triglav Trophy in Slovenia where he won the gold medal in Novice. He won 3 national pewter medals (Novice in 2006 & 2007; Junior in 2010) and competed 6 times in Senior at Nationals from 2011-18 with his highest finish being 10th in 2012 (where he had a memorable free skate to Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofé that was choreographed by Nathan Birch -- big thanks to @UMBS Go Blue for this fan cam of an early season performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvVJ2SCb9NI ). Scott also attended and graduated from USC while he was competing. I wish him all the best!
