Aunt suing Nephew after winning

Okay guys we don't do these kind of things here in the North so this was super shocking and downright wrong.

This lady puts her name and her nephew's name on the ticket. She ends up winning 1.2 million.

The company cut the check in half and sent each one of them 50% of the total winnings.

Now the aunt is mad and suing her nephew because she says her nephew doesn't deserve half of it and it's 100% hers.

Like does this woman know basic math? Like you still get $600,000!!! Plus the other half goes to your family.

Disgusting . . .

$600,000 is a nice little payout. It could set her nephew up to be in a good

Exactly! He could open up a bank account or get a leg up on savings, etc - Heck a real good aunt probably would have given him more but yeah . . . I wonder what put so much hate in that lady's heart. Maybe she's going through something bad too. I hope they both find a way to work it out.

As someone who has earned 30k or less a year for almost her entire life, I would be retired tomorrow if I suddenly had $600,000, and I would be living very comfortably on that. I can’t imagine complaining about that.

I was thinking more, buy a property, invest some, pay down college loans/pay upfront for college, and then bam, he has a massive leg up on so many other kids in his generation.

She says she only "put his name on the ticket for good luck" - well, it worked, innit?

Her argument is just so completely illogical. If she was using his name for "good luck", then how does she deserve it? It wasn't her luck!

And she is going to pay lawyers a lot of money to argue for this ...

This would never of happened in America because in this nation we love Winner's we do not sue them! At least not in the town my wife and I live in in New Mexico, not sure about the more immoral part's of the nation.

She's insane. $600,000 is a nice little payout. It could set her nephew up to be in a good, comfortable place for the rest of his life. What's her problem?

Maybe she's felt deprived of things throughout her life - not only materially, but deprived of love, of friendship, of dignity, or opportunity, of justice.

I'm not trying to justify her behavior. IMO she should be happy with her win and equally happy that her nephew has a nest egg that will help him immensely in his adult life (if he saves/invests it).

But we see this kind of miserly thinking and/or greed when family members fight over inheritances. When my father died (mom died earlier), plans for me, my sister, and my brother to clear out his condo were made. I lived in a different city than the two them, and had to fly in. By the time I arrived, my sister, who is very comfortably middle class with her own home and decent retirement savings - much more well-off than me - had already been through the apartment to take what she wanted before anyone else had a chance. My parents had one thing that might have had some value - a collection of porcelain figurines - and you can bet she took those all for herself, not thinking to share the enjoyment or value of them (if sold) with my brother and I.

I was really unimpressed with her behavior - considered it petty and unbecoming. Though I did and do forgive here.

I'm certainly proud to be a cape bretoner lol. We always get into the news with dumb stuff like this that goes viral.

Though you guys are definitely missing out on the amazing memes circulating on FB in the cape Breton groups. Comedy gold.

This was my first and main thought about this. Is she too stupid to realize that the legal fees are going to eat up almost everything - especially after she pays taxes on this?

The amount of money here doesn't matter. If she wanted all the winnings, she should have gotten the ticket and kept it all to herself.

These kind of stories are why I have never and will never loan money to family members or friends. I've never seen it turn out well for other people. If I see someone who needs financial help and I can and want to help them, I will give it as a gift and not expect anything paid back.

We don’t pay taxes on lottery winnings here. :shuffle:

What??? I need to move to Canada. And win the lottery.

When you think about it in the grand scheme of things, $600,000 minus paying a lawyer to end up losing anyway because the dude's name was on the ticket, is going to net you what, maybe $200,000 by the time you are done filing lawsuits? Just shut up, take your $600,000 and live on it responsibly and given how old she looks, she's set for life. Hell, with my minimal lifestyle, I could make $600,000 last almost 25 years. :shuffle:

Exactly. Oh well. Let's see how this plays out. Hope she changes her mind. @Mozart - I can't wait to check out these memes myself lol - Feel free to share some or PM me. Cheers!

This woman is really not very smart, and there's no cure for stupidity. I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me she has no case since the nephew's name was on the ticket. If a lawyer pretends there is a case and takes her money, she deserves it.

Seriously, she should be happy to see her nephew get a boost or head-start in his life.

But she's probably not a happy person to begin with - and in missing out on the happiness of giving, she is ultimately more to be pitied than condemned.

The selfish-ness of the woman is hard to swallow for me, that is also true about the pills I take for my back. I don't understand why pills have gotten so big, who's mouth is big enough to do that without gagging.

I hope this woman gets zero dollars and it teaches her a life lesson to change her instincts; or at least to ignore them!

That was what I was thinking as well especially after hearing her speak in the video. She is not a happy woman and I think some sort of primal instinct to keep all the resources to oneself kicked in after they won the jackpot.

It would be exactly like having a joint checking account. Hello … earth to the Aunt! Wake up! Since she included her nephew's name on the back of the ticket, then she does have to split it with him. She better be glad that she didn't include another member of her family's name on the ticket. She would have to divide it three ways then.
