2017 Fall-Spring TV New/Returning Shows

Thought some of you guys might want to know this news. DuShon Monique Brown, the woman who played Connie on Chicago Fire (she was previously on several other TV shows including Prison Break) passed away today at the age of 49. This shook me up so much with shock that I've been on and off crying most of the afternoon. She was such a sweet person. I met her in Chicago at an event once and she was so much fun to hang out and chat with there. This is such a big loss for the CF family. RIP DuShon and my thoughts & prayers to her on and off screen families. :fragile: :wuzrobbed

:( As I read your post before I read the article I kept thinking 'oh she don't mean Connie' and was thinking it must be another character. So shocking and sad.

Eta; Rise is carbon copy of Glee, it is quite remarkable the resemblance.

I watched two episodes of Rise and found it to be the exact opposite of Glee. With Glee, I could watch a show and be entertained and uplifted. Rise is the exact opposite. A town of unhappy people who do not like themselves, do not like one another, and do not like where they are and what they are doing. There isn't one single person in the very large cast who likes anyone or anything. Major downer. I was so looking forward to it, but I'd have to go on anti-depressants if I were to continue watching this show. :fragile:

911 turned out to be quite lovely. And Angela Bassett is a beautiful woman. Her arm muscles!

9-1-1 is one of my new favourites. Such a great cast. Wonderful group of people to spend an hour with each week. And yes, Bassett is a queen. :D

I am sssoooo loving Good Girls!! My favorite new mid-season show! Loving Champions also. Sure its silly, and a little sterotypical, but that kid is hysterical!

The final season of The Americans starts tonight. It is getting very good reviews, so I am very excited! Apparently the story line skips ahead to 1987 and the period of Grobachev's perestroika, of which Elizabeth most likely isn't a big fan.

Grey's Anatomy ..... would Teddy and Owen just get together and go live in Germany together so they can stay the hell off my TV. Man I hate those characters!! Never liked either of them since the day they came on the show, and half the show was about them tonight. Go away Teddy and Owen. :P

I've noticed that they seem to be highlighting one doctor's personal life for most of the episode a lot lately. But, I have to disagree with you - - I've always wanted Owen and Teddy together (if he can't be with Cristina!). I hate Amelia. Funny, Kim Raver was on Designated Survivor (not as Teddy) and then on Grey's in the same week. Busy lady. (I taped the three plane crash episode reruns on Lifetime yesterday.)

Oh I don't disagree there .. I DO want Owen and Teddy together .... but OUT Of Seattle! The both of them. Get together and go live at Teddy's place in Germany or wherever the hell. Just not in Seattle or at Grey-Sloan and off the show! Forever. :P

That's sad to hear. I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy for what seems like 10 years, but I really loved Owen and Teddy when they first came on. Maybe because Teddy ended up being an awesome mentor for Christina and character in her own right, and Owen was one of my faves. Some times characters (shows) stay on too long and writers end up destroying them because there's nothing left to do.

I think my dislike of Teddy traces back to my long-standing dislike of Kim Raver back to her days on Third Watch (hated Kim). As for Owen .... I just never liked from the minute he came on the show. :P

Isn't it funny how people can have such different views of characters. I liked Owen "from the minute he came on the show" and pulled the icicle out of Cristina. I wouldn't have minded if he left WITH her though. They were perfect together. I couldn't see him going on with anybody else but Teddy, because they had so much history, but I wanted her to come back to Seattle. I've just always wanted Owen to be happy with someone. He only ended up with Amelia because he couldn't have either one of them. Doomed from the start.

The Crossing is looking really interesting from the commercials, but I say that about a lot of shows I was 'once and done' on. I'm planning on watching that one, so I hope its good. Clearly its got to be some kind of sci-fi thing (which normally ends up turning stupid story-wise because of trying to make it fit with 'real life' people), with those people coming from 180 years in the future, but I hope it kinda ends up making some sense ... somehow.

I keep seeing a preview for "Killing Eve" with Sandra Oh on BBC America. It looks intriguing; Oh plays an MI5 agent chasing down a psychopathic assassin: Trailer

I may be drawn into it! Premiere is Sunday, April 8th.

I just started One Day at a Time on Netflix, and I think this is the sitcom I've been waiting to see for a very long time. It's not the greatest written show ever, but it's really good and has some great moments, and I think this is the show that I want to think of when thinking about topical shows that portray working class "real" Americans going through things that will resonate with what the American public is facing. I'm glad I live in a world where a show like this exists and where Justina Machado can be a lead character headlining a sitcom about American families.

8 p.m. - JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR LIVE! - NBC

No comments yet? I'll go first cause I'm still thinking about it. I've only ever seen the movie, when it first came out, and on t.v. only a couple times on channels without commercials. That was irritating. They could have at least had "intermissions" and had maybe 15 minutes of commercials three times. What did the live audience do during the commercials? They showed "backstage" down in a little corner that I really couldn't see.

And that reminds me that I wonder if it messed up the momentum of the actors too. The singing was so strong and powerful earlier, but the last hour seemed like they were just screaming and a little bit off. And that stupid live audience cheering and clapping and drowning out some of the singing couldn't have helped either.

I didn't know how they were going to do hippie style songs without the long hair and hippie clothes. Ted Neely - sigh! At least they didn't do a remake with rap music! ha ha

The end shot was really impressive though. Spoiler if you haven't seen the movie though, the whole thing was shot outside in the real desert somewhere in the Middle East (I should look it up), so it looked like it really would have been back then. Anyway, the beginning showed the actors in regular clothes getting off buses and putting up the sets and stuff. And at the end, it showed all of them back in regular clothes getting on the buses, except for Ted Neely, who played Jesus. I got chills typing that.

So this isn't the Bonnie Franklin show?

I was wondering that too. It looks like they did a reboot.

It’s a reboot with totally new characters with a similar premise about a single mom. The difference is that it’s about a Cuban-American family in 2016-2018 with Rita Moreno as the grandmother. It’s a new writing team but it’s still executively produced by Norman Lear who is active behind-the-scenes and during the tapings.

Season 1 was much stronger than season 2, IMO.

I found The Crossing to be a bit better than I expected. A lot of the dramas with a fantasy/sci-fi angle to them aren't really written all that well. But I thought the writing for The Crossing was decent enough. It remains to be seen if the writing will become stronger as the series progresses...or it weakens and things become obvious and/or cheesy. Lots of bits and pieces in the first episode for us to wonder about as far as to what the "big story" will be as things progress. The cast was strong, just hope they don't make anybody into a walking archetype.

No comments yet?

I agree that the first hour of Jesus Christ Superstar was stronger than the second. John Legend and Sara Bareilles were enjoyable, but in my opinion, there will never be a better Mary Magdalene than Yvonne Elliman. That's a voice for the ages. I love Ben Daniels in The Exorcist tv show, but here as Pontius Pilate, his voice seemed to disintegrate into a gravelly, shriek mess. Wonder if he skipped out on some of his voice lessons leading up to this production. I also agree that the 1973 film is tough to match, I liked the points you made and agree that they are highlights of that film.

Watched the first couple of episodes of The Terror last night, good stuff. It's based on a book that combines the infamous 19th century Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage with local monster lore, and so far it's working. Production values are excellent.

I saw a few trailers of Killing Eve and I'm incredibly excited about it. I've loved Sandra Oh for a long time and I'm starting to become a fan of Jodie Cromer after a few things I've seen her in.

Can I slip in some reruns here? They advertised WKRP in Cincinnati being on METV during our local CBS station's news this morning. I went to record it and it's already been on a week, but the "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly" episode is on Monday. 9:30 weeknights.

And today I am recording the last 6 episodes of ER. It's on during the week, but they do a marathon on Saturdays. Usually seven episodes, but one day there were 10 on! So the Saturdays don't match what was on during the week. They've now gone through all 15 seasons. I barely remember this last season, except for different people who had left the show being on again. I must not have watched the reruns that year? I just remember the final two hour episode and the retrospective (which they are not showing on POP) on before that. The night before, my cable went out and I told the guy he better get it fixed today because the final ER was on that night. ha ha He did.

They are starting back at the beginning next Saturday. I'm not going to DVR all of them again. I wish they'd do marathons of something else old on one of these channels. Things that just popped into my mind are Knot's Landing (I got to watch the reruns every morning on TBS or TNT or something way back when I was home for 20 weeks with my broken leg, then it was on SOAP - until we got the channel in our cable package), West Wing, Army Wives, China Beach. I watched all of my Partridge Familys. I didn't even start watching Grey's Anatomy till ER wasn't on anymore. And I've seen the reruns of all the seasons before several times now.

In summary (ha ha) I miss good t.v.
