Wow, I dont know what to think, I am not expert on those, I know just the usual Moulin rouge, wicked, phantom, les miserables, hamilton, i guess it include la la land and other musical movies???
I'm a total ignorant because I find that style extremely cheesy and cringy :( The only musical that I know with not cringy music is Notre-Dame de Paris. I'll need to do research on those. :wall:

West Side Story (done already), An American in Paris, Kinky Boots, Les parapluies de Cherbourg (done) Les jumelles de Rochefort, Peau d'âne, Sound of music, Chicago, The Bandwagon, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, My Fair Lady... and don't get me started with Bollywood !

Some of these only work if movies are allowed, are they ?

Try Sondheim? His scores are stunning and complex, and not unknown to figure skating either- Send In The Clowns is from his show A Little Night Music. Plenty of older musicals have music from Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein etc. Everything Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly ever did would count as Musicals. You'd get some great Foxtrots and Quicksteps out of those classic movies if movies are allowed. If you look at what's been on Broadway recently there are some beautiful shows that I wouldn't class as cheesy- any Canadian team should look at Come From Away. Then there are the Fosse shows. I could definitely imagine Fosse style choreography translating to ice.

Hubbell/Donohue had my favorite skate in the short dance earlier today. Sensual and intense with gorgeous skating skills. They reminded me of Virtue/Moir. I'll keep my fingers crossed for them to go home with the silver medals round their necks.

Off broadway could be a possibility. Would fall in the scope at least.

Call me crazy but I can't wait. Cabaret, Fiddler on The Roof, Sweeney Todd, Wicked, Hair, Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Producers, Funny Girl, Dreamgirls, Chicago, Grease, Tommy, and Rocky Horror Picture Show (though the costumes may be ), Evita, Momma Mia.

And those were what I could recall off the top of my head.

Have to add would love to see someone skate to Love Never Dies.

Til I hear You Sing and Beneath a Moonless Sky are great songs...

Y’all know we’re probably going to end up with a bunch of Andrew Lloyd Webber medleys, right? :scream:

A US junior pair team had a Memories/POTO medley FS and Igor probably already bookmarked it for one of his teams.

If they use more rare music I would be fine with that.

Has anyone actually skated to Love Never Dies?

I can't wait either. Hoping it will be OTT and wild. (A fun antidote to the last couple years of pensive, tasteful, contemplative, FDs. :p)

I think it's great! Another new SD choice!

I also think if Broadway/Musical/Operetta is the theme, dance teams will work harder to make sure they select something different than the standard selections. Plus we'll get to see teams that normally wouldn't choose this kind of music show us what they can do with it. I always find it so interesting which teams can really excel with an SD rhythm when compelled to perform it. And the level of performance is always so high when all the top teams are tackling a style. Plus, this is a very versatile genre. Lots of choices for teams to gear programs to show off their own strengths.

I love musicals, but I don't think they translate to figure skating all that well very often. They can definitely be cheesy (and while I don't mind that in a stage production, it's not my favorite for skating, and especially not for ice dance.

But maybe that's just because skaters tend to choose the cheesy muscials. There are so many good ones out there but we always hear the same ones. I'll cross my fingers that most teams will try to choose something that isn't well known in the skating world!

Orford/Williams skated to Love Never Dies for their 2013-14 free dance. It did include "Beneath the Moonless Sky" and "Til I Hear You Sing," but also "Coney Island Waltz" and "Heaven by the Sea." And I most certainly had to consult Wikipedia to identify the names of any of those tracks that are still lodged in my memory musically.

Tina Garabedian and her previous partner had a really nice program to Once.

This would be a great opportunity for teams to find a style that suits them because of the huge variety of source material, but I fears whole warmup groups of POTO and Les Miz.

Help me. I'm having scary flashbacks of Belbin and Agosto. That is going to need some serious painkillers and stiff drinks, albeit not together.
They’re more fun together, unlike musicals and ice dancing.

Oh, I don't know. Music from musicals/operettas helped Davis & White win Olympic gold (My Fair Lady), Olympic silver (Phantom of the Opera), World gold (Notre-Dame de Paris), and World silver (Die Fledermaus).

Helped Virtue & Moir win Olympic gold (Moulin Rouge) and World gold (Funny Face)

Helped Cappellini & Lanotte win Worlds (42nd Street)

Helped the Duchesnays win Olympic silver (The Sound of Music and West Side Story).

Helped Klimova & Ponomarenko win Worlds (My Fair Lady)

Helped Torvill & Dean win Worlds (Mack & Mabel)

Though, I have to say, the musical selection I was just remembering today after hearing about this SD option was Denkova & Staviski's 2000-2001 Original Dance--the second half of which was to I Wanna Be Like You from the Jungle Book:).

I am so thoroughly OK with cheesy as long as it is fun.

Brace yourselves...

The SD (or now called Rythm Dance) for 2019-2020 is... Musical, Operetta, Broadway.

(Help, I really dislike those, or maybe introduce me to some great ones please)
Did they say what rhythms they will to skate to? Knowing the ISU rule makers, they like to put everything under the sun. It will probably be waltz, tango, march, polka. I'm just glad it is not paso doble again. That season was a tough watch.

I haven’t read the past posts but I just found one post disparaging the art form of musical theatre. I’m going to make it my life’s mission from now to the the Fall of 2019 to introduce you guys to some of the most glorious and important pieces of art alive.
