I thought the show was dragging in the beginning but I was really surprised when it was like 11:30pm and they were about to go to Best Picture, which made me think they were making good time. It just felt long.

I didn't say that you said that. I said that the world we live in likes for us to believe that.

Making every woman stand up is not going to make it go away.

No, but it gives a visual to those in society who believe what the world tells us (that sexism is a thing of the past). And they need this visual because otherwise they won't believe women and only consider them to be whining.

And as I said, I don't think she only asked them to stand up because she wanted to shove how few women there were into our faces. I think it was also a recognition of her fellow female nominees' achievements.

But Salma looks weird again. How can such a beautiful woman choose these clothes?

Salma's husband's company owns Gucci, so she usually ends up in their clothes. Which rarely flatter her, unfortunately.

This 'in your face' was unnecessary

The only way to fix things is to make people face them. It's not going to go away just because someone mentions it in a speech. Whenever people get "in your face" there is always someone complaining that it's not necessary but no one ever changed anything by sitting down and shutting up. Being uncomfortable is a motive for change. Being comfortable is not.

Although I don't think that was actually her intent. It was to give these women some well-needed recognition.

And, if someone really hates to stand up that much (when they are at an award show where they might win and would have to not only stand up but go on-stage and make a speech), they can just not stand up. I'm sure a few didn't stand. There's always at least one IME.

No, but it's going to demonstrate how pervasive the problem is. Which might then lead to things happening which might cause some change.

Asking people to stand up at an awards show is on a slightly smaller scale than what Rosa Parks did on the bus, but I'm pretty sure Rosa Parks knew that refusing to give up her seat wasn't going to end all racism. But she did it anyway and it sparked a whole movement against racism. Maybe seeing the small-ish number of women nominees that stood up at the Oscars will make other people think about why there were so few, and/or make them think about ways to change that.

The jet ski was funny, and while a joke, I think did decrease the number of "overtime" speeches.

Some fashion person on one of the major networks said Nicole Kidman's dress was the best of the night. I wondered what he saw that no one else did.

I missed the big awards as I fell asleep and woke up in time for the credits

I actually liked Nicole's dress. I thought it suited her. She has worn some very weird things, and a lot of things that just overwhelm on her, but I thought that the design on it was good for her, though wouldn't work on most people.

The ones I liked best were:
Allison Janney (though I think she needed a coloured lip to really up the whole look)
Greta Gerwig (best thing she's ever worn)
Jennifer Garner (AMAZING colour)
Eiza Gonzalez (I wish I could wear yellow)
Lupita Nyong'o (so cool)
Jennifer Lawrence
Meryl Streep looked classic.

I also kind of loved Whoopi Goldberg's dress and think it would have looked absolutely amazing on someone like Zendaya.
And you've got to give it to Rita Moreno, who wore her dress from 56 years ago.

I remember back in the 2001 Oscars, Steve Martin said the producers were going to give away a brand new flat screen television for the person giving the shortest speech. When Julia Roberts won, she started out saying she already had a TV so she was going to take her time. I forgot who actually won it, but I always thought Best Cinematography winner Peter Pau should have received some sort of award for thanking like 40 people/companies/crews in about 45 seconds.

I only caught the last 20 minutes or so, maybe four awards, but that was enough to predict that Shape of Water would take Best Picture.

Being accused of assaulting his wife doesn’t necessarily mean Oldman was guilty of it. Apparently Oldman’s exwife made the claim during a custody battle. Her claim was investigated, no charges were filed, and he received full custody of their children.

In 2001, Oldman’s ex-wife Donya Fiorentino accused him of hitting her multiple times with a phone receiver as she tried to dial 911 in front of their young children. Oldman’s representatives have long denied the assault, and the authorities investigated and awarded him full custody without filing charges.

When I read stuff like this, I never know what the preferred outcome should be. Did an abusive creep get custody of children? Did a massive witch lie and make it harder for real cases to be taken seriously? Neither scenario is good.

LOL, this is exactly what I said to my friend. I thought the brown overwhelmed Zendaya, but Whoopi's dress would have looked great on her.
