The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

People are talking about how Alex looks similar to a famous actor named Yeo Jin Goo in South Korea which is pretty funny. I think there actually is some resemblance and it's not one of those times where people are reaching.

I love Yeo Jin Goo. I never thought about it, but yeah I can see how people think there's a resemblance.

I also highly recommend his drama from last year, Circle. SOOOO GOOD!

I had to google this Yeo Jin Goo. I too can see a slight resemblance.

We had already discussed that a long time ago, people always mention it and the truth, they are very similar, he is like the third ShibSib :D, very handsome!!

I think we should all tweet (if you have twitter) and congratulate the Shibs for being the only team outside of V/M and P/C to receive a perfect 10.00 in PCS and that's with skating in the penultimate group!

Well it's good that it's coming up now again!! More attention for the Shibs haha.

I've been reading Korean twitter (from fans who attended the event in person) and the Shibs are not the popular ice dance team but everything is very positive. Most of the observations are that their skating is very clean, they're extremely cute and that they're the popular American team there. One of the funnier ones was from the Team Event which was something like "Wow the Shibs are amazing! I would die if I had to hold my brother's hand all the time!!"

I sent my love during the Instagram live. Although there were over 2000 people watching ( ! ) so who knows if they were able to keep up with the comments

They skated so amazing and I’m a little angry on their behalf that it wasn’t a SB score.

When do we know the judges?

As an aside, I get the P&C love on FSU but I’m oblivious as to what people see in H&D. To borrow a phrase from caseyedwards, they are journeyman ice dancers.

They're quite charismatic and I will say their skating skills, having seen them in person, are very good. There's also the whole hot chemistry thing. Oddly enough they have more of it now they're not dating, LOL. I think there's also a perception they're more exciting/risky than the Shibs.

I don't want to really diss H&D. There are things the Shibs do better, of course, but we know what it's like to be dumped by fans on other teams, so I'd like to think we can be above that. (Not say you're doing that snoopy, just expressing my personal philosophy on things).

Today it was announced like 1h before the event, I guess it will be the same

So, the Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, and Japanese judge put the Shibs ahead of H/D. The rest put H/D higher, but the biggest difference in points was with the American judge Sharon Rogers. So much for the USFS doing what they can to promote the Shibs over the other ice dance teams.

Sharon Rogers gave Maia and Alex PCS which was below the trimmed mean (final PCS component score) for 3 out of the 5 components. In contrast, Rogers gave PCS marks which were above the final component score for 4 out of the 5 components for Hubbell and Donohue. She gave Maia and Alex a lower Performance score as well, which is interesting given the contrast in audience reactions.

It's all interesting, especially after the lengthy complaint that Hubbell's mother posted to Facebook last week (see the former ice dancer Denis Petukhov facebook page from a week ago during the team event.)

It’s ice dance. It’s partly reliant on mojo so you have to talk up your team.

I like H/D a lot. They have a sinuous fluidity and a strong connection to each other, and now they have good programs too. I like most of the top ice dancers and often love them. But Maia and Alex are my faves since first seeing them in 2012. They are extra-super-talented and creative.

Eh, that's just a mom being hurt her kids were left out. It's an understandable feeling. Again, let's keep it classy and cool.

I think I can do that without downplaying other teams' strengths, JMO. I think if the Shibs beat H/D tomorrow, it will be a hard fought battle because H/D have improved so much over the years.

Think about it -- the Shibs pretty much beat everyone in 2011, then got beat by just about everyone -- even Coomes and Buckland beat them in the FD in Sochi, Giles and Porier beat them at Ondrej Nepala, etc. etc. And then they managed to beat nearly everyone since then, even having Papadakis and Cizeron sweat a little after a few short dances and being within shooting distance of Virtue and Moir at 4CC FD last season. There's that's talking up my team, LOL.

Whatever happens tomorrow, we should be grateful because the Shibs have received so much fanfare, attention, and love beyond the small world of figure skating fandom and have an Olympic medal to boot. I seriously want them to have two Olympic medals from these games and will be willing it to happen across the globe, but the Shibs have done amazingly well for an ice dance team who didn't win gold.

And so far they have had performances of which they can feel completely proud, 3 performances, and hopefully 4, unlike GPF and Nationals where it was not their best.
Yes, that is so important! They found they can rise to greatness at the right moment -- even three times in a week, so far! They can be very proud Olympians.

Okay, it's almost 6 a.m. here and I wrote at length about the Shibs for my morning pages (basically a daily writing exercise).

I realize that I've been spending the hours following the SD trying to "prepare myself" for disappointment if they do not make the podium. And that's just unrealistic. Life is full of disappointments and no amount of preparation I can do will make the disappointment any less harsh. In addition I am taking away the anticipation and fun of being a fan in trying to prepare myself.

If they do not make the podium. I will be sad. I will be disappointed. But there's no sense in trying to advance those feelings. I have to just deal with them as they come.

So one of the exercises in my morning pages is also thinking about gratitudes and I'm grateful to be see that SD and see them do it so well, regardless of the score, the rhumba pattern level or the placement. To see them perform with joy and with such passion is why I am a fan in the first place. I realize I been so stuck on the scoring/placement/medal prospects, that I fully did not enjoy their performance. So I went and watched it again, without the pretense of scores, and realize it was truly an amazing thing to watch.

Mr. P said something really great. He said, as a fan, you should just hope good things and not try to predict what will happen. As a fan, you should be confident in their abilities and that they will put everything out there. So, I'm going to try to do that. They have prepared SO much for this moment and I will look forward to seeing them do their FD today. I know they will put everything out there.

ETA: I share the positive vibes VGT -- whee! -- has on her GS post: https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/s...ex-Shibutani&p=1988545&viewfull=1#post1988545

It's amazing how far they've come since the last Olympics. In that sense, I'm so grateful that I stuck to them....

Here's something I wrote on my Facebook page recently after the team event (in reference to Alex's tweet thread):
It was so hard to be a fan on this team a few years back because of the comments I seen among hard-core skating fans. People said that Maia wasn't good enough, that they would never amount to much because they were limited as siblings, that they would be surpassed by up-and-coming junior teams. Four years ago, they were trying to figure out who they are, appeared to be on a downward spiral and everyone was sure they would break-up or retire after Sochi (and they did consider it at one point). They never gave up -- and I never gave up on them -- and here we are -- three-time world medalists, two-time U.S. champions and now OLYMPIC MEDALISTS.
