The Adam Rippon Good News Thread

Please also give us the breakdown on Kolyada's mess of a skate @Sylvia. Obviously, skaters without quads have no margin at all for error. It doesn't make it fair either.

Which is why Plushenko and his coach Alexei Mishon's still kvetchin' to this day about 2010 when Evan Lysacek won Gold over Evgeny without a quad! :COP: :plush: :revenge:

Russia speaks, IOC and ISU listen.

TT&J to their credit point out also how Adam should have received more credit for his superior choreo and interpretive abilities. What you have to say about that @Sylvia? :fan21:

I don't know whether Adam's lutz was underrotated. But, even if it was, that program was spectacular. It is ridiculous that Adam and Kolyada got nearly the same PCS score.

I'm really ticked off about the scoring. But, I'm thrilled that Adam skated so well. That performance was fabulous. So was the interview.

Adam's 2nd 3Lz was called < and cost him 3+ points (looked like he hesitated before the entry) and that was the difference between 2nd and 3rd. He skated/performed well, though. :)
...

They showed the replay video on the 3-lutz. There was a slight underrotation with the toe point of Adam's skate turning on landing to complete the rotation. It didn't really make the difference. The lack of Adam being fully rewarded on superior components for choreo and interpretation made the difference.

I'm all in for positive on Adam @Sylvia! :D :cheer2: Obviously! :encore:

Wow, I just screamed when Mirai hit the 3-axel! Now she has to keep it together for the rest of her skate!!! Yaaayyy!!! AdaRipp the first to jump up and yell for Mirai!

Yay for roommates - Mirai and Adam! They both hit their team LPs!

Only Mirai got the marks and placement that were justified and correct! Adam was robbed; and that's coming from someone who thought he ripped off a place on the team! Kolyada was meh and didn't even seem like he wanted to be out there, but even with error on quads, he wound up placing 2nd in front of Adam! Same with Chan who fell and had a hand down; wound up 1st! How do you beat a clean performance even with extra credit in GOE and the overall performance scores? This isn't ladies' skating where Caroline is being held up artificially! :scream: :duh: :kickass: :plush:

Yeah, Adam should have been in front of Kolyada, but regardless, he still did a great job. Carolina got 3rd behind Daleman and Mirai.

I'm so happy Adam had that Olympic moment at the end of his program.

I first became a fan of his when he gave an interview about how he didn't like that his coach made him straighten his hair for competition. As a curly haired person I was so happy when he started wearing his curls. I was glad he got to be true to himself, in a small way.

Well, now he skates and lives true to himself in the biggest way, and it is working out really well for him. He's a great role model.

Teammates and roommates who have so much to celebrate. Great Olympic moments for them and Team USA. I'm cheering for Mirai & Adam and the entire team to carry those great feelings and inspiration into their singles events! :cheer2:

Twitter is in love with Adam and his free skate, rightfully so, he was the #1 trending topic worldwide, and Coldplay’s “O” has surged back into the iTunes chart at #20. Amazing and so much well deserved recognition for him. I found particularly touching the commentary from the LGBTQ people on Twitter who seem to be so proud and happy to have a member of their community representing them so openly and unapologetically at the Olympics.

I was so happy for Adam after his skate that I actually cried. For him to have that performance and that moment on that enormous Olympic stage with the world watching was everything I wanted and hoped for him. Bravo :encore:

He was stellar, such a moving program - so much more than all year - he did what he came to the Olympics to do - so proud of him as an athlete and competitor. And also how he handles all the questions, and keeps the focus on how he does so well because of his determination, grit, and hard, hard work. Go Adam!

I was so happy for Adam he skated beautifully and his reaction to Mirai's skate was terrific. I hope he skates his very best again for the IE and forgets about where he ends up in the standings.

He'll need to pull out that Quad Lutz to make the podium! You see what "clean" does these days; still hung behind to skaters with errors! :wall: :COP: :duh: :plush:

Loved the LP :respec: if the individual long is a splatfest like Sochi I can see him cracking the top 5

What would points on a UR get him compared to the 2A though?

If he can rotate it, I think he should go for it. But I also don't want him hurt again. Healthy is a good thing!

It affects what the judges think; notwithstanding the UR of a quad compared to a clean 2-A! I remember the 1st time this kind of nonsense began! Back in '06 Olympics, Jeffery Buttle went for a quad he knew he couldn't complete, but still got credit for the attempt and was rewarded with a bronze medal! The commentators pretty much endorsed doing it beforehand! I'd just assume the sport goes back to the old scoring methods with Ordinals! With these added numbers to confirm judges complicity in shady scoring, it doesn't help the reputation of the sport in the least! I can't believe some of the results I've seen of late; glaringly exampled by Rippon falling behind Kolyada in the team event having 2 errors during his "free skate" compared to Adam's clean effort! :COP: :duh: :plush: :revenge:

My Twitter feed is half skating and half journalists, so it was v. amusing when worlds collided last night.

I wonder if Adam and team will think about putting the quad lutz (probably fall) back in after the scoring last night.

Mostly, though, I am over the moon. :swoon:

Yep, and thanks for sharing. Apparently the journalist, Philip Rucker, also used to skate. Figure skating is all over the place in the news and on social media. It should be like this all of the time. Renaissance in interest for the sport of figure skating please. We need some badass shows for retired skaters and for those soon to retire!

Here's Adam's interview with Good Morning America!

And his performance:

We've known it all along in the skating community, and now for the rest of the world, indeed, you are right Robin Roberts: AdaRipp is a Star!!!

I love how Adam responded so witty and low-key when the reporter told him people on social media are saying he wuzrobbed in the fp team event scoring! :respec:

Thanks for posting NBC Sports' YouTube link, @aftershocks. Could anyone outside the USA let me know if you can watch this video?
ETA: Darnit, "this video has been removed by the user" :(

ABC's Nightline did a 5-minute segment last night, interviewing both Adam and his mom (also features Mirai's 3A and their joint Facetime appearance): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA78OyDtVB8

ETA a photo of Adam and Mirai showing off their medals on the Today Show set (taken & posted by his agent on his Instagram): https://www.instagram.com/p/BfGM8FjDaBE/
