Sasha Cohen marriage

When would it have been "timely" for Michelle to stop competing? Up until 2005 Worlds, she had been on the World podium for 9 years straight and been national champion for 8 years straight. It seems to me she retired at the right time.

Being on the podium was no special feat since the ladies have been lame for quite a while! Irina Slutskaya was even off the ice for a while with health issues! It was the same for the men with Plushenko owning it; leaving for a while, but still won events upon his return just in time for the Olympics of 2014! I personally thought he was a necessary evil, but he still took their lone male spot and broke down after the team event! MK wasn't doing much but taking up a spot from an "up and comer!" Just something personal I feel about it! The same thing is going on in tennis with old man Roger Federer hogging the spotlight! It's not that he's the best, it's because he's well liked/loved! He was able to succeed only because the top echelon was crippled and weren't able to compete! It's easier to win when Djokovic, Raonic, Murray, and Nishikori are out with injuries for prolonged periods of time! :40beers: :COP: :drama: :kickass::revenge:

Michelle was our national champion up until 2006. She beat Sasha fairly and squarely many years at Nationals and was still on the world podium until 2005 when she was 4th. Even with a weaker field, she was still a top contender. And which up and comer was Michelle really taking spots away from? Emily Hughes? Katy Taylor? Alissa Cziney? Meissner made the Oly team that year and no other up and comer in the US would have been close to a mildly healthy Michelle. I think a 2005 Michelle probably would have won the Olympics, tbh. The skating wasn't that great there where a clean Michelle couldn't have won.

If I recall correctly, Michelle was dealing with injuries. She never talked about her injuries, but I bet she would have continued a bit longer if she could have done it. She seemed to love competing and did not seem to be wanting a life in show skating.

Then the "up and comer" can claim that prized spot by WINNING it and beating MK or whomever. It's not your spot unless you surpass the one that is "taking up a spot." There is no spot except the one you claim via your own accomplishments in a competition.

And just recalling US nationals, Emily got to go and she was decent in 2006. Katy Taylor skated a very nice free, but was still very junior. Bebe bombed her long, Alissa bombed both programs. Christine Zukowski was 6th, but I don't recall her at all, and Amber Corwin didn't skate well either. Michelle certainly wasn't robbing a bunch of skaters with amazing skates of a chance to compete. It was a very subpar Nationals.

What up and comer did she take spots from? Sasha and Sarah were able to make the world team. The next "best" skater was Jenny Kirk and her results at worlds were always terrible.

2003 and 2004 nationals, Sasha was basically being handed the national title on a silver platter and she couldn't do it. In 2003, Michelle's absence (if everyone skated the same) would not have given her a world title or a national title. She beat Michelle at 2004 and 2005 worlds and still couldn't win a world title. She could not even win a world title in 2006 when again, she was basically being handed the gold medal prior the free skate. And she got smoked by Kimmie Meissner of all people.

If Michelle had retired after 2002, the most Sasha would have benefited would have been 2 more National titles and a world bronze medal. Sara would have had 1 more national title. Jenny Kirk would have continued to place 15th at worlds and never win a national title. no one else would have made the world team or won national titles.

Tell that to the skaters' families killed in that plane crash that allowed a very young neophyte by the name of Peggy Fleming to accomplish all she did sooner rather than a lot later! :COP: :drama: :duh: :kickass: :puppet:

Umm...I probably shouldn't even ask this, but what on earth does a tragedy like a plane crash and Peggy Fleming filling a void that was left by people dying have to do with Michelle Kwan continuing to compete? I am still trying to figure out the wronged party in Michelle competing til 2006. Michelle Kwan was not held up. If Sasha skated better she would beat her. She never did at Nationals...Michelle posted solid results until her retirement. Is there some skater who was going to miraculously beat Sasha, Kimmie, Sarah, etc and win the Olympics that lost their spot because MK competed? I can't think of a single skater that was unfairly shut out by MK. If you are going to make this argument at least use relevant examples of skaters during the actual time period.

Yes a tragedy for the US and for the skating community. But what does that have to do with MK taking up a spot.

It's just an example of what "could" or couldn't have happened due to a spot being open or not! Peggy's life was changed due to that tragedy! She would have been lucky to skate in the subsequent Olympics and Worlds all due to that plane crash! I think all those skaters waiting in the wings might have had more successful careers if not for MK just hanging on like a vampire, sucking the life out of the fans unnecessarily! She was rich, popular, with a resume unmatched! Those last few years was her just taking up a spot as far as I was concerned! Just my opinion due to the history I've noted already! :duh:

And the field wasn't that weak. She had strong contenders from her own country--Sasha, Sarah, Tara. And Irina was the great Russian hope. Michelle had to contend with both her and Butyrskaya. Since 2004, no one else has had a string of World medals like Michelle did--including five gold medals. Only Yuna Kim comes close--medaling five consecutive times, in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

So, are we to conclude that it was a good thing those future "hangers-on" (I won't call them "vampires") got killed in a plane crash? BTW, I disagree that Peggy wouldn't have accomplished all that she did without the tragedy. The crash happened in 1962. Six years later, she still would have been on the '68 Olympic team and with her superior figures and balletic style, would have been the likely winner.

Wow it does appear they split. Didn't they marry a year ago or something? She not wearing a ring in any recent pictures.
I don't get this conclusion. I have looked for information, and find none. Not wearing a ring? Geesh. That is not exactly scientific proof. I don't know where she was in all those pictures, but it is common practice to NOT take or wear your expensive jewelry when traveling. It is not safe.

Also, as a public person, she is savvy enough to know that not wearing her ring was a would be interpreted as a sign that there was trouble in her marriage. She has been in the spotlight long enough to know that rumors burst forth out of nowhere. If they were splitting up and she did not want people to know, she would wear the dang ring. If she wanted to announce it, I think she would simply announce it, rather than leaving signs for people to interpret about.

Michelle Kwan with Sasha at 2005 Worlds literally gave a third spot to the US skaters that she wasn’t going to use at 2006 Worlds AND ended up not using at the 2006 Olympics. She carried that U.S. program for ten years. It was wide open for anyone to take her title and it wasn’t for a lack of trying. She even lost to younger American skaters, so it was possible. Furthermore, the last ten years of American ladies has shown us that just because a champion dominant skaters wasn’t there that someone else would have simply taken the helm and had similar success. Kwan’s successes was because she was who she was, the Kween. I get you have an irrational hatred of her, but no need to minimize what she has accomplished. Just hate her because you hate her and need the attention of venting that hatred out every few months. Also, if you think Kwan was being a parasite during her last seasons when she went to Worlds and competed and helped earn spots, then I’d hate to think what you thought of Sasha coming back at 2010 Nationals.

Well you're really disgusting! Thanks for twisting my post! We know where you're coming from now! Get lost! :kickass: :revenge:

Haha this thread is bizarre. Just shows the world always comes back to Kwan.

Ain't it disgusting? I was over Kwan when only 15-16 years old with all the fawning and slobbering over her! I never cared for her skating and could name a half dozen others I'd prefer to watch! Like most American skaters, she was the consummate "stick up her arse" type of skater with less grace than Sasha at any stage of their careers! When she struggled, it was painful; esp. when her supporters went overboard with excuses! Loved how she was owned by Slutskaya those last few years! I still muse about a Masters' event before the Olympic year of 2002; singling and doubling all her jumps! She couldn't wait and fired Carroll on the spot! "Nice move girl!" She was so exposed! Even with help from the judges at SLC, she still lost AGAIN to another skater that wasn't in her league! By 2005 Worlds you could see more pictures of her picking her arse up off the ice! I made up a post asking people to caption them when she was languishing on all fours! Mines were "I'm too old for this $#!t" & "I know I lost a contact around here somewhere!" The MK fans were livid while her detractors roared with laughter! :2faced: :COP: :drama: :oksana1: :puppet: :revenge:

"Disgusting" is making a post claiming that Peggy Fleming benefited from 72 people dying in a horrible accident.

Well didn't she? She wouldn't have skated obviously not being a part of the team genius! If you want to call it a benefit, that's on you! I didn't put it that way! It's a string of facts you can't seem to digest which isn't my problem! :COP: :drama:

With apologies to the group Heart and their iconic song "Alone," I give you:

Ms. Cohen

I’ve got a question, FSU
Is Sasha’s marriage finally through?
On Instagram I see her bling
But no sign of a wedding ring
And it may not be my place to pry
But I just must know about my
Ms. Cohen

At first this thread was about Sasha Cohen
Naomi Nari Nam, Hughes, and Oksana
And then the Qween high on her throne
Are you still married Ms. Cohen?
Should we still call you Ms. Cohen?

Podium, Czisny, Katy Taylor
This thread belongs here in the trash
Savoie, Zukowski, Kwiatkowski
And something something something plane crash
And I now want to roll some joints
Filled with weed and exclamation points
Ms. Cohen

Thread drift has made us ignore Sasha Cohen
Remember when she was on Project Runway?
I’m taking issue with your tone
I just let out a load moan
This feels like the Twilight Zone
Are you still married Ms. Cohen?
Or should we leave you alone?

Ms. Cohen, Ms. Cohen
