It could have been excellent it just wasn't "done". Through a normal season you make adjustement with music cuts and all... but everybody is in a rush for this one. That's why WeaPo dropped spartacus.
Then again, it could be the same FD but more classical. Or a Hitchcock 2.0 ? I don't know but I'm waiting for that info !

I found it kinda flat but it was early in the season....I guess it depends on what they have replaced it with. Piper is actually a classic beauty and last yrs free dance was so good. I really don't think her strength is kookiness, Guess we have to wait until canadians to see it.

Thank you for the link, kittysk8ts. I don't know if that is their music playing, and I am not sure, but to me it sounds like something from Florence and the Machine. I would not be disappointed if it is.

I too liked that FD and had no problem "getting" it, even though I am from Europe, not USA/North America. But you are right - most likely a good idea to change it, although depending on what the new FD is and how it will be received.

Intrigued to see their new FD if indeed it's not just a new Exhibition. I really like them but their programs' concepts were not as well thought out this year. The FD music is too subdued. They are never better than skating either on very quirky/voidy music like their 2015/2016 FD which I loved or with strongly evocative music like their Hitchcock or even Tango. However, their attitude and Carol Lane's especially after Rostelecom was very off putting for me. But I hope they have pulled themselves together and will be highly competitive at Nationals where all Canadian teams will try to prove or redeem themselves: V/M finally reaching the 200, W/P skating clean with an improved FD and G/P making up for their lost grounds.

S/D are the Spanish champions.
Difference between 2 teams for qualification: less than a point - something like 0.95. Normally, H/K are going to the Olympics.
For this difference it feels not settled though. Less than a point !

Of course it's going to be heartbreaking for one of the 2 teams... figure skating is not a sport for the weak Mentally it's so difficult... I hope S/D can find the fire to bring Spanish Ice Dance to its best along with H/K !

Criteria was total score from head to head competitions (Golden spin and Nationals), H/K won the total by 0.95.
Smart/Diaz will go to worlds.

Congrats to them! Was worried that the Federation would backtrack on their criteria because the scores were so close like last year. Commentary team said Sara and Kirill will go to Europeans and the Olympics while Olivia and Adria will go to Worlds. Also said Patrice was trying to console Olivia who was bawling in the K&C.

S/D and the Danes are not going. Then, it depends on L/LG citizenship situation (and maaaaybe europeans).
I thought considering the whole season, S/D would go. They skated well at skate Canada too. But the fed dictate the creterias so no arguments.
And now I hope H/K can get into the top 10 at Euros so they could have 2 spots for next year Realistic ? Probably...

Just to add to what levineismine wrote, the criterion was indeed performance in two head-to-head competitions, Golden Spin and Spanish Nationals. In addition to having the higher total score, H/K also finished ahead of S/D in three of the four segments.

I know Worlds isn't what S/D were aiming for, but I'm glad the Spanish federation split the assignments; given how close the two teams are, it seems fair.

I feel bad for Olivia and Adria, they had few great comps this season. And their SD is really nice.

But at the same time I’m super happy for Sara&Kirill
They can call themselves lucky this year but considering last year’s controversial decisión they probably deserved to have some luck

Congratulations to Hurtado/Khaliavin. I'm happy for them, especially after what the Spanish fed pulled last year (i.e., changing criteria on them at the last minute). I do feel like H/K are stronger skaters--now they just need to start getting more consistent.

They were beaten by fra2 last year, and this year 3 french teams are going. But no Isr this year probably, and they can beat Ukr and Pol if they skate well.

You sum up exactly how I feel about Gadbois vs Zhulin Zhulin have teams that are immensely talented, who have great skating skills too. But the packaging isn't there yet, the skating is sloppy and sometimes frantic. S/D have gotten less in Skating skills scores but better PCS everywhere else. Gadbois knows how to put there team in the light even though S/D can lack in some areas. However technically S/D were the strongest I've ever seen them, and in the SD, clearly better than H/K this time.

It would be nice if H/K could leave Zhulin, but I don't see where they could go given that Khaliavin isn't going to relocate without his wife. If there were a high level center in Europe, that would have been a good option; with Khaliavin now a citizen of an EU country, Monko could coach or find some other job. But what would she do in Canada or the US? How would they even afford it?

I really disliked S/D's FD this season and I never really bought into their skating, especially her. However, I feel crushed for anyone who loses out on an Olympic spot in such a close contest, especially when their SOs and other rinkmates are going. At least they can keep FB/S company and they can comfort each other while training for Worlds.

Agree, but I really liked H/K’s SD in Zagreb and was pleasantly surprised
Unfortunately for them they weren’t that great at Nats
Their FD also has potential to shine and honestly speaking I’m glad that Spanish duo (well, half Spanish ) is going to the Olympics with Don Quixote
