From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

According to the fsskate.ru site

Leonova's first name is Алёна, which, if I understand correctly, is pronounced Aliona/Aljona.

Zagitova's first name is Алина.

Berezhnaia's first name is Елена.

There are names with different spellings that are pronounced the same way, like Ann/Anne vs. similar and related names that are pronounced differently, like Anne/Anna.

Those are not pronounced the same way though.

When will they announce the entries for the Russian nationals? Can't wait to see those competitions.

I really feel that a lot of Russian names should use ' y'instead of 'i' when they write them in English. Like Katya is closer to the pronunciation than Katia, and Alyona is closer than Aliona (or Alena)Ilya is closer than Ilia. The e with two dots on top is pronounced 'yo', so the 'io' doesn't sound accurate to me. However, that's how they choose to do it. That's why I like to see the names in Cyrillic, instead of relying on English.
It's not really correct to say that "ё" is pronounced as "yo" in Russian, as it only happens at the beginning of words or after a vowel, not after a consonant like in "Alyona". But it's the closest an average English speaker would be able to pronounce it. Certainly closer than "Aleena".

Also, Aliya is a Tatar name. Alina is Western in origin, Tatars often use these, like Diana, Artur, Robert etc. Alyona is a folk Russian form of Elena. Arina is a folk Russian form of Irina. But now they are used as separate names.

Anna Pogorilaya withdraws from Nationals due to injury, her season is over

This is all part of the plan for Anna to continue following the career arc of Maria Butyrskaya. :drama:

Pogo's implosion at last season's pre-Olympic worlds was Anna channeling Butyrskaya's implosion at the pre-Olympic worlds in 93 that cost Russia a spot at the next Olympics. Obviously thanks to Med, Pogo couldn't prevent Russia from sending no ladies to the Olympics on her own, but if Butyrskaya couldn't go to the next Olympics, Pogo cant either.

So basically, she's right on track to win worlds in 2023. :glamor:

Why would Medvedeva, rush her recovery by competing at Russian Nationals? Why not recover fully and compete next at the Europeans? We all know she's a hard worker and more than likely she'll be competing every chance she gets with Zagitova in practice. It just seems so rushed. Oh well.
