The season for Canadian ice dance kicks off in a big way for younger skaters next week with Minto Summer Skate. Per the extensive flight lists, the vast majority of the national junior ranks are scheduled to compete.

A few senior teams -- Sarah Arnold and Thomas Williams, Molly Lanaghan and Dmitre Razgulajevs (new), and Haley Sales and Nikolas Wamsteeker -- will be competing at Lake Placid.

Fans in the Toronto area can get a chance to check out the entire Scarboro crew's new programs at their annual So You Think You Can Judge show Friday, August 11.

I'd be curious to know why they picked novice 5, but not 2-4?

It jumped out to me as well, and couldn't be explained as the junior selections were as being based almost entirely on 2016 JGP assignment -- something that threatened to prove circular for this season's JGP, but fortunately we're already seeing Minto performers earning spots -- but criteria for novices is not based on score or placements, but elements. Teams looking ahead to two or fewer years of junior eligibility must have executed a free dance with step sequences at least Level 2 and Level 3, Level 4 twizzles, and a GOE per-element average of at least 0.75. Teams with three or more remaining years of junior eligibility must have executed two step sequences of at least Level 2, Level 3 twizzles, and a GOE average of at least 0.5.

Looking at the teams' FD performances at Challenge and Nationals, here's how 1-5 stacked up (not being sure how many years of junior eligibility each couple has, I'm assessing them per each set of criteria):

D'Alessandro/Waddell:
CHALLENGE: L2 step sequences; L3 twizzles; GOE average of 0.74.
NATIONALS: L2 and 3 step sequences; L3 twizzles; GOE average of 0.82.

Kastkin/Circelli:
CHALLENGE: L1 and 3 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.657.
NATIONALS: L1 and 2 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.686.

Behiel/Behiel:
CHALLENGE: L1 and 3 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.18.
NATIONALS: L2 and 3 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.379.

Mizuki/Volskis:
CHALLENGE: L3 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.75.
NATIONALS: L1 and 2 step sequences; L4 twizzles; GOE average of 0.57

McCue/Clemente:
CHALLENGE: L1 step sequences; L1 twizzles; GOE average of 0.149.
NATIONALS: L2 step sequences; L2 twizzles; GOE average of 0.539.

I'm not sure this will prove the soundest methodology in the long run, but I'm glad to determine they were at least consistent in its application. And thanks for raising the question -- may expand this into a piece! ;)

Congrats to Lajoie/Lagha on their win at JGP Zagreb! I really, really enjoyed their FD, even though I find the vocals on both the pieces they are using a bit grating. They skated beautifully and the program works well as a coherent whole, with nice highlights and strong choreo overall. Something about their partnering, technical preparedness, connection with each other and overall look reminds me of Belbin & Agosto in their junior days (which is definite praise from me, as I loved junior B&A). They skate with so much maturity for a team that, at 16/18, are probably among the younger teams on the top of the junior GP ranks these days since they have several more years of international junior eligibility. :cheer:

I would hope that Lajoie/Lagha compete as seniors at nationals. Yes their senior programs ( esp the SD ) would be undercooked. But I don't see them finishing below 5th even with underprepared senior programs. At least they would get experience sharing the ice with a top class field and most likely make the national team.

If Lajoie/Lagha skate seniors at Nationals I feel like they're being set up for a 4CC spot. 4CC will have all the top teams getting ready for Pyeongchang so it could be an opportunity to test the waters. Their focus is obviously getting that Junior World title but next year they have the opportunity to move up in Canada. I guess we will see.

So am I the only one that thinks that if V/M don’t go to worlds (which come on they won’t) that there is a danger of Canadian ice dance only earning 2 spots for worlds next year. There is a chance that both W/P and G/P could finish behind all 3 American teams, 2 Russians, and Capellini/Lanotte since worlds are in Italy, 2 Italians if we count G/F possibly beating G/P. That’s not even counting the French. I could see both Canadian teams finishing something like 6th and 8th and just missing out. Any thoughts?

I do not see any reason for them not to go to worlds if they feel Canada needs it...This is their last yr of skating and they want every moment. If spots are a problem I think they will go to worlds to give the dancers a chance next year. For sure with V/M there the scores of either W/P or G/P should give 3 spots...They said they decided not to retire to get another crack at Olympics..they did not say when they leave the Olympics they will be hanging up their skates at the door.

But they returned to get one more crack at the OGM. What if they don't win the OGM, will they want to go to Worlds?

The chances for Canada to loose the third spot are slim, even without VM, Unless someone get injured again. Healthy WP, especially if they will be back to their Canadian no1 status will easily beat the Italians, the Russians and at least two American teams.

Not easily. Weaver & Poje would have a fight on their hands.

Again, though, it's very common for top athletes to withdraw prior to Worlds during an Olympic season. Really hard to predict.

Who knows? I have no idea if they want to either way but as I have not read hay or nay I would not say they will not go to worlds.

They were asked about it sometime at Worlds last year I think. Scott said something like they hadn't decided and they'd see how they felt. He added that one more chance to compete the programs is pretty tempting.

Worlds comes up pretty quickly after the Olympics. Unlike prior years where the event is literally the final week of March and into like April 1, 2018 Worlds goes March 19 thru 25, making the turnaround time between Olympics and Worlds a week shorter than "normal" I believe.
