RIP Tom Petty

Last I heard, still alive but on life support. Does not look good

There was a little news thing on Yahoo this morning that he was on life support. Then a "breaking news" a couple of hours ago that he had died. That is gone now and the life support thing is back up. And a message from TMZ that he had not died. But it's probably just a matter of time now. Wow.

Only a few days ago I watched the Martin Scorcese documentary about George Harrison, "Living in the Material World". Tom Petty was featured very heavily since he was a friend and a fellow member of the Traveling Wilburys. He spoke very emotionally about the loss of both Roy Orbison and George. :(

Tom was part of "The Defiant Ones" excellent documentary that recently aired on HBO. In addition to his music I loved his wry personality and it was on full display in this film. I also remember in the No Nukes concert around 1980 Bonnie Raitt told him not to worry if he heard "boos" because it was people saying "BBBRRUUCCCEE" as Springsteen was the main act that night and his fans show up. Petty laughed and wanted to know the difference because either way they wanted him off and Bruce on. I love that he took the music seriously but he never took himself that seriously.

One of my favourite moments at a concert ever was courtesy of Tom Petty. This was many years ago, and in between songs he said "right now I'm trying to cram as much fun into my life as possible." From following his career and music over the years, I get the feeling he did just that.

Words to live by as we remember a great artist and entertainer.

My personal favorites were "Runnin' Down the Dream" and "Stop Dragging My Heart Run Around." My husband says his favorite was "Last Dance with Mary Jane."

Sorry to hear of his passing, especially at such a comparatively young age.

And that's just a few, not to mention his collaborations with Stevie Nicks. (There are some great videos on YouTube of the two of them performing live, including Stevie singing some Heartbreakers songs.)
