U.S. Ladies [#18]: These Boots Are Made for Skating

So I think the biggest question mark for me going into this season is Wagner, the fact that she went back to Moulin Rouge again...

Is there a source confirming that she is switching back to Moulin Rouge? I've seen some posters mention it here, but no announcements or anything to back it up.

Karen Chen's SP is fabulous! Wow. Hand down on the loop seemed like she was being tentative there. Other than that, so great.

Also loved Mirai going for the triple axel. It looks so big! Some errors but not a bad start! Looking forward to the long programs.

Too bad about Bell's combo, but her "Chicago" SP is always delightful.

Not U.S. Ladies, but I fell in love with Marin Honda today.

I completely understand the puberty part. Completely upsets your stability and velocity.

I also understand the loss of the notion of invincibility that comes along with age. I also understand coming back from an injury and the timidity that could bring.

I guess where I get stuck is what happens to the jumps in early competitions? Where did they go? It can't all be learning a new program. Your body must know what to do. It is not like you have to re-learn them. So, Polina had a long time off. But how long is it going to take a person of her caliber to perform her jumps. Is it physical? Mental? If a skater takes a month off are their jumps gone? Does it take a couple of days to get them back? Weeks, months? Is it stamina?

I have always wanted to know.
It may be like anything else - any sport or playing an instrument. It takes practice an repetitions to be at your peak. It takes more than talent. Your brain and muscles have to get up to peak performance. Stop riding a bicycle for a few years. When you get back on it may not be automatic - it takes time. And with the high level of jumps, etc. they are doing now, it would take that much more time plus all the workout that goes with getting and keeping all your muscles in lean, mean shape.

I thought Mariah was ditching the Chicago SP? Not that I'm complaining at all - I love that program!

I really hope not. It was a fantastic program, but two seasons were plenty.

It would be really unusual to do a program for a third time, even if La La Land wasn't working out, which is why I'm skeptical. Especially since she's already redoing Hip Hip Chin Chin. Moulin Rouge was fab, but I agree that it's time to move on.

Ashley just posted a soundless Instagram story of her 3L-1/2L-3S with the entry and exit choreo looking very much like the moulin rouge program to me.

Mariah's score at SLC (60.68) is virtually identical to her SLC score last year - but this year it's only good enough for fourth place.

I haven't paid attention to all the details but how much have the rules changed in the last two years  :shuffle:

I'm basically asking what changes, if any, will Ashley have to make in the LP to be competitive today? Two years in skating is a long time ago. Surely she will have to do more then Michelle did when she resurrected her Rach. SP after four years in the archives

I can't think of any major rule changes in the past two years.

She'll have to move all the jumps to the 2nd half of the program. ;)

To be competitive I think she should get out there and.... compete. Even another Veteran (who is also a World Champ) Carolina Kostner is getting her tooshie out there several times to compete.

She aint even doing the Japan Open which she had been doing.

She will only essentially have 2 competitions before Nats (the 2 GPs). (Maybe she makes Final, who knows). We all know she won't do 4CC so should she go to the Olys she will have 0 competitions between the 2.

I dunno how she does it. If it were me Id need to get out there in front of judges a handful of times and get the rust worked out.

Karen changed her dress? it is beautiful. And the end of her program looks so impressive with the amazing spiral and spins :respec:
It's true. Spirals like that have become such a rarity. Hers is exquisite and will set her apart. I honestly found myself wondering why she is not being talked about as a rival to Med and Zagitova. When she hits, she's perfection.

Because she still scares people in that she hasn't quite shaken off the reputation of being inconsistent, and she still has UR issues at times in the back end of her 3/3. Plus, she doesn't Tano/Rippon and backload and do the most transitions the way Eteri has Med/Zagitova doing.

Ashley told Lynn Rutherford at Champs Camp that she was looking to skating in a California club competition sometime in September to get out there before the Grand Prix, but no Senior B.

And she should make a certain someone happy that she went sleeveless. ;)

:biggrinbo Still one of the weirdest complaints I've ever heard.

I just saw it and I agree. She looks really strong out there! :respec:

And that spiral tho...

Kind of wish she could pull a Kwan and hold that longer across the ice but maybe the system doesn't allow from that. Karen gives me late '90s US ladies skating vibes in the best possible way.

Doesn't Ashley have issues because of concussions? Maybe that's why she limiting her competitions.
