Underused classical music

Classical music is popular but the downside is that certain pieces get overused. Carmen, Swan Lake, Nutcracker etc have been done to death. What are some great pieces of classical music that hardly anyone skates to that would make a great program?

I've always like the music that Lu Chen used in her 1995 SP. I can't recall anyone else using it, at least that I've seen. I think this is by Felix Mendelssohn.

I know this music isn't from the classical era but I've always wanted to see a well-choreographed program skated to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. His Firebird music has been used a lot though.

A personal favourite of mine is the cello concerto by Edward Elgar. I think Jeff Buttle skated to it once but I can't recall any other skaters using this beautiful piece of music.

There was a novice (I think) skater at Golden West just last weekend that used the Elgar! I thought it was pretty ambitious for the level. And yes, Jeff used it for his free skate in the 2002-2003 season.

Adam Rippon skated to the Rite of Spring IIRC but I don't recall the exact season.

For pure classical music - many years ago now there was a skatefic called Phantoms, where the main character wanted to skate to Brahms' second piano concerto. Still waiting for it to happen IRL...

It is quite difficult to choreograph good program to Rite of Spring though. But if someone can do that, it gonna be a master piece.

Another piece that wish someone skate to is Debussy's arabesque, it going to be great with light skater like Mao.

There are so many epic concertos that has not been skating to as well.

Where to start...

I agree on Lu Chen's 95 SP, Mendelsohn's piano concerto no.1

Too little baroque music is used (Four seasons excluded). I loved Carolina's free last year, Denkova/Stavisky's OD 2003 and that Patrick Chan used Concero Grosso.

Why won't anyone skate to Rachmaninov's cello sonata, I will never understand.

More later...

I was long obsessed with that piece and wishing that Mao or the Shibs would use it.

I wish someone would skate to Dvorak's "Song to the Moon." I love that piece so much and I don't think it's been used before?

Also, there are pieces that have been used maybe once or twice but nowhere near what Carmen, Swan Lake, etc. have been used. If skaters don't want to go totally out there, how about choosing something like Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jSki-VP6fE or Beethoven's Emperor Concerto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j-qf5790T8.

These pieces have been used before, but I think they would sound relatively fresh compared to some of the choices this season.

99.9% of classical music has never been used for skating, which is a shame, because there is so much great stuff. Off the top of my head, these come to mind:

Tchaikovsky: nobody ever skates to his symphonies 1, 2 or 3, all great. And the Hamlet Overture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaxxtFGY5wI

Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky is powerful and fantastic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Du9TXBVlM

La vergine degli angeli from Verdi's La Forza del Destino, for soprano and men's chorus is gloriously beautiful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeMYyyLZZr8

Phaeton by Saint-Saens is exciting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHZBSGlXkM0

Adam skated his LP to Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune by Debussy in the 2013-14 season, perhaps that's what you are thinking of? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN1svAVZrVM

Awww great! What's about Schubert? do we have top skaters use Schubert before? I don't recall any.

Well, there is Kostner's Ave Maria, but I seem to recall her (or was it someone else) skating to the second movement of the E flat major piano trio ... am I imagining things? I can't find it on youtube ...
