U.S. Ladies [#18]: These Boots Are Made for Skating

How did it turn into sleeves? I guess we should all want the skaters to freeze their asses off. I'd worry more about tights over the boots? Or "boot problems"? Whatever, feel free to continue the silly discussion.

Besides, Totmianina's sleeve getting stuck on Marinin's skate is one of the best things that has ever happened.

Anyways, while we're all losing our sh!t in here that Mirai landed 3axels in social media clips, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva has shut up about it all off-season and actually landed the jump in competition this week. :respec: Mirai is not alone this year and hopefully can follow suit when it actually matters. :cheer:

Michelle Kwan had a lot of dresses with long sleeves, one arm long sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves, straps, halter, etc. She didn't get boring with her dresses until she got with Vera Wang. Some of them were beautiful but there was a basic design template she used for almost all of them. She did shake things up with her 2004-2005 Bolero dresses (both the Worlds QR and post-Worlds fluff competition long-sleeve purple one and her no sleeves, fake-flesh topped gold Nationals and Worlds LP one).

Exactly! Now we have posters 'frantically' digging up sleeved photos to prove their point! Only in the off-season... Great post, @Karpenko.

Ting Cui received + GOE for her 3T+(Rippon)3T combo & Rippon 3Lz. Her flying sit spin only received level 1, however. Here's a shorter link to her JGP Brisbane SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QKazv0wW2Q

Kaitlyn Nguyen's SP in Brisbane (ETA link): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k6aH9dLIl4
Her 3F+3T was called clean but she fell on her 3Lz. She received level 4 for all 3 spins.

5 Ting CUI USA 55.34 31.08 24.26 6.29 5.86 6.14 6.07 5.96 0.00 #13
6 Kaitlyn NGUYEN USA 54.27 32.04 23.23 5.89 5.64 5.86 5.86 5.79 1.00 #21

Both will skate in the final group of the FS on Saturday.
Final results from Brisbane:
5 Kaitlyn NGUYEN USA 161.42 6 5 (coached by Ivan Dinev & Angela Nikodinov)
6 Ting CUI USA 150.95 5 7 (coached by Vincent Restencourt)

FS scores & videos:
5 Kaitlyn NGUYEN USA 107.15 57.78 49.37 6.29 5.93 6.14 6.21 6.29 0.00 #20

She was credited with landing 5 of 7 triples cleanly.

7 Ting CUI USA 95.61 47.20 49.41 6.39 6.00 6.14 6.29 6.07 1.00 #21

Her opening 3Lz-half loop-3S (arms overhead in both triples) was the 3rd highest scoring jump element (12.10) in the field (after winner Trusova's 2 second half 3-3 combos).

ETA that I hope @her grace doesn't mind that I'm re-posting her pertinent comments from the JGP Brisbane thread in Kiss & Cry to here:
There's definite ground to make up, but the U.S. is moving in the right direction. Both Nguyen and Cui have adopted the Rippon-fest approach to jumping that is so en vogue right now and they are doing all the difficulty of the top ladies sans Trusova's quad. :p

Last season, the American juniors couldn't defeat any of the Korean skaters in their JGP events and in this event, both Americans defeated both Koreans. Not to mention that the highest score an American lady achieved on the JGP last season was Ashley Lin's 154.45. Nguyen's 161.42 is a significant improvement there.

... There's lots of room for growth in basic skating and presentation, but Ngyuen is young, fairly reliable, and seems to have that competitive spark. I hope her team can help her improve and enhance her basic skating so she can become a medal contender.

I don't mind Chen in sleeves, I just wish her costumes were less busy in general. SO MUCH BLING.

It also bothers me that she was dressed as a swan (or sometimes a peacock) last year for her short to On Golden Pond when the bird call at the beginning is clearly a loon. This, IMO, was a missed opportunity for a really cool and beautiful costume:

Yeah, Karen's costumes are so busy. It's like they throw everything on those costumes possible! But I think that's just the designer's aesthetic - lots of bling! Interestingly enough, Karen and Ashley use the same designer. I tend to like Ashley's designs more, though. Maybe because the rhinestones on Ashley's usually are an extension of the design rather than just being slapped on for some extra shimmer/color?

For reference (from the designer's instagram):
-Karen's 2016-2017 Dresses (Short, Long)
-Karen's 2015-2016 Dresses (Short, Long)
-Karen's SoI pants outfit (I actually love this one)
-Ashley's SoI costume, Dangerous Woman
-Ashley's 2016-2017 Dresses (Short, Long, Original Long)

Don't believe these clips have been posted in this thread...

Mirai Nagasu shared the 3A clip (same jump as tweeted by Tom Z.) after Champs Camp, starting from the beginning of her Miss Saigon FS, on her Instagram (plus there's another 3A clip landed in practice, if you swipe right): https://www.instagram.com/p/BYJ00qUBnVs/?hl=en&taken-by=mirainagasu

I'm a fan of sleeves for ladies' costumes. Definitely prefer them to the strapless look, which I feel often looks unfinished--as if they forgot something on top (plus the nude mesh is often terrible).

Yuna and Carolina were both stunning in long sleeves in Sochi. Yuna SP, Yuna LP, Carolina SP, Carolina LP

And of course Julia Lipnitskaya's long-sleeved red coat dress.

They all wore long sleeves until the ISU changed the rules to allow shorter sleeves ca 1990. By 1998, spaghetti straps were allowed...and Kwan took full advantage.

I wonder if part of Karen's costume strategy is to amplify her presence on the ice. Ashley is older, and has excellent presentation / presence, probably due in no part to her maturity.

Nicole had some really lovely long sleeve dresses in addition to Dr. Zhivago.

Her white 1997 Worlds SP dress and her first blue "Invitation to Dance" dress were lovely. Her "Zorro" dress also had long sleeves but was less traditional -- a bolero type jacket and panel skirt -- one of my favorites ever.

She really looked great in everything; she's 40 this year!

Back to the topic at hand -- nice JGP debuts for Kaitlyn and Ting. There were some really nice parts to their programs and it's good to see them attempt the technical content to keep up with the Russians and Japanese ladies. Here's hoping that they can rise to the challenges of competing and growing because they both have potential.

I was proud of both Kaitlyn and Ting during the ladies' event in Brisbane. Their first JGP outings, and you could see the attack. I agree it was a step forward from last season. And both of these girls strike me as the type that will respond well to the challenge ahead of them. They were neither of them satisfied.

I guess it's not official yet because of Gracie? I can't see them naming Caroline to the team and then replacing her, at least four to seven people would be outraged and try to scare the hell out of them. :soapbox: Literally almost ten people, and from all over the world.

I wish Gracie well, but if she's truly not ready she shouldn't be competing yet IMO. It'll do more harm for her than good at this point. (but it won't harm Caroline :saint: )
