Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

The below interviews were probably posted previously, but I just recently viewed them. I was so interested to hear Gabby's speaking voice and how she expresses herself one-on-one, as I haven't actually heard her speak for any length of time.

Gabby spoke in the above interview about a CBC feature on her at Worlds prior to her free skate. I hadn't seen or heard of the feature before. It starts at about 37:20 in this CBC ladies free skate coverage at 2017 Worlds:

Similarly, I hadn't previously heard Kaetlyn's speaking voice in a one-on-one lengthy interview

I have just watched Jane Gray's sp from Wild Rose and what an awesome obscure skater she is! I do not know much about her but she has solid deep edges, great posture and musicality, speed, and a triple lutz. She has tons of potential to my trained eyes but I guess her competitive skills are not yet to lar with her technical skills if we have not heard more from her. A hiden diamond.

We'd see Jane Gray at BC Summerskate. Her jumps were hit or miss, but she was always beautiful to watch, and I was always happy to see her on the roster.

I never thought Gray had that much speed but I always did see her as having potential. In most comps where I saw her she attempted but missed the lutz although the jump always seemed to be within her grasp.

KO's short to Summertime will score well. Looks like her Olympic dress already. Byoo-ti-ful.
The color of the dress and the vibe of the program was a bit reminiscent of Gabby's short at Boston worlds.

Lutz has been moved into the bonus which was expected.

In an event like this I wasn't worried about the elements. It's more about getting the program out there with a bonus of seeing how the dress feels. Still, I felt there was something about her first two elements, the 3F/2T and layback that had just that much more power and confidence behind them, that I was schocked they could look even that much better given how good those elements already are.

Good test drive. Looking forward to the long debut.

Austman looks fit and ready to go. Good program, very showy as she has been doing in the past.

Darn turn between sal/toe combo keeps showing up. It's becoming a habit I'd like to see disappear. Flip looks strong although -GOE here.

I have to think she's leading candidate for SC spot. I'd like to see a cleaner skate in another summer comp if she can manage it. Confidence will be important heading into the fall.

I know it's still super early, but I didn't like Kaetlyn's SP. I feel like she could have absolutely any music playing there - definitely not up to her usual connection to the music, and the performance quality just isn't working.

I love the back of her dress, but I find so many 'necklaces' on the front makes it look way too busy and kind of tacky.

Nowhere near the impact of last year, it's a good program in itself, but that style really doesn't make her "pop" IMO. It's not a bad program, but if we're talking gold medals with this I'm afraid not. This isn't going to beat Medvedeva even if it's squeaky clean, this vehicle isn't strong enough. I really wish they had played up her charisma more with the SP song choice. There doesn't need to be some sort of Canadian ladies connection because Joannie had a Summertime program, does there? That's what it feels like the reasoning for the program was IMO, I just wish they hadn't. Not bad but not enough impact with this style on her.

I love the amount of ice she covers on that 3flip :swoon:

Still early on in the season but I too wished KO picked something with more substance for the SP. Felt like she was trying to pull out movements but the music was just too blah... I'm sure by the end of the season she'd make this program work.

I usually don't like instrumental versions of songs, but I prefer Joannie's music cuts because it really built and carried the program.

^^^^ Is all of this based on the sniplet of the program she posted a week or two ago??? Or has she posted the full performance or competed????

If its on the sniplet I think we need to wait and see it in its entirety.......

Osmond is a true performer. She could make anything come alive.

@AngieNikodinovLove No, this is not based on a snippet. She competed last night. I have to agree with the consensus here that this program is pretty flat. I do want to give it another competition to see how I feel about it then, but as of now I feel like she's just wasting time before she inevitably changes back to last years sp half way through the season.

I just can't shake the feeling though that she's a better skater than this program shows her off to be. I'll happily eat my words if she makes this come alive by the Grand Prix series, but this is falling way, way short of last year's sp. I loved last years sp from the first time
I saw it, even if it wasn't yet polished and refined. I knew it would be a stellar piece for her from the start. I decidedly do not have this feeling about Summertime after the first viewing.

Agreed with @Karpenko on the  distance and speed on the flip!

@Karpenko Im just starting to watch the video. Oh its the Summertime program.. Yeah, OK......I though all y'all were talking about Swan.

Summertime is a bonafide warhorse for me... so that could make sense to me now.. Im gonna go back and watch the program now.

So far it looks like she borrowed a dress from the closet of Mirai Nagasu.

Added later: Ok, I just watched it.. Oy...... that music... this rendition is not for me. I don't get it.. They change the rules, and open up the vault and let you choose any music and now with lyrics. And some people are choosing music from the War. I guess this just makes me appreciate Joshi Helgesson and her odd-ball music even more now. lol

At this point I would give the green light for someone to just go out there and skate to Iggy Azelia and J-LO doing "Big Booty."

I cannot stand Summertime, and this rendition grates on the ears... her skating and jumps are wonderful, but I much prefer last year's program, which I loved from the start. Other than the music, I also really dislike it when she stops and poses, trying to be sultry. I feel I have seen her do that many times before.

I love Kaetlyn and her skating, and she has so much charisma, but I think she can do much better and has to if she wants to get closer to Med. However, it is August... a lot can happen in a few short months.

OT but there's something wonderful about @AngieNikodinovLove with that Karen Walker avatar, and @honey interacting together. ;) honey what is this, what's going on, what's happening? What's that supposed to be? (2 new seasons! :cheer2: )

I have a feeling Karen would say the same thing to Kaetlyn's choreographer Vance. :summer: (ETA - ACTUALLY mister, his name is Lance. Lance Vipond in fact. Karen's drink strikes again) who wants to think about Summertime during the Winter Olympics anyways, unless you're skating to "Run to You" by Whitney as an ode to Usain Bolt or Jackie Joyner Kersee?

If Austman went to the Olympics and Worlds, where would she place, if you were to take a guess?

I think with a absolutely clean SP she would make the free and skate in the first flight of the LP. She would need to have all her tech elements clean and get the levels on her spins and footwork. I don't think she would get the same PCS or footwork levels from an international panel. Having said that, a lot can happen in the next 6 months. She improved a lot over the course of last season so if she keeps that up who knows? She might have a better chance with a 3F+3T and if the Lutz gains some consistency go for the 3Lz as the solo jump. The 3S+3T seems to be a mental block for her. I am sure she can do it, she just pulls back in competition. It is too bad she struggles with the loop because a 3F+3T and a 3lo would also put her out ahead for that third spot and move her up in the SP standings internationally.

I think this SP is a good vehicle for her and the costume and hair are absolutely fabulous. Very similar to last year so she can basically build from where she was last season and not have to start from scratch. Looking forward to seeing the LP.

Seriously, hats off Jeff Buttle. That program works for her, plain and simple. Needs some refinement, but I am almost afraid to think about how great this program could be for her. Now lets just ditch that short program shall we, and get you a short program worthy of the skater that you are. :cheer2:

I said the same thing in the Kiss and Cry Board. I just think the SP is a waste of all her talents, but again i'm sure her and her team will work hard to bring it up. Just wish the music had better builds.

Much prefer the long to the short. A few times she definitely seems uncomfortable in the long, but I love some of the unusual angles Jeff has her hitting in the choreographic moments.

Luckily she's at a point where she'll get reputation points in the SP and then she can skate that LP lights out.

Though the costume needs about 75% more drama in the skirt (I like the top half)
