Yuri!!! On Ice

I was just coming here to post this too. So many juicy quotes. Such as...

There have been many strange moments watching a fictionalized version of our world, so much so that I’ve had times when I say to myself, “Who told!?” There are so many secrets in in the show that only skaters or people very close to them, would know about. Sometimes a character will remind me of a dirty little secret that even hardcore skating fans don’t know about, and while it may not be completely played out in the show, the pink elephant has entered the room.

Chris in particular annoys me because, aside from on-ice orgasms, there is so much about him that reminds me of several bitter rivals of my own.

If I could choose one performance to skate that would match me, I would definitely say Yurio’s “Agape”. It is totally my style.

I'd love to see Johnny skate Agape. :swoon:

Johnny Weir really doesn't seem to like the character Chris, but oddly enough he appears to be heavily based of Brian Joubert and Tomas Verner, both of whom are good friends with Johnny. It's kind of funny actually.

What makes you say Joubert and Verner? I can't really see anyone specific in Chris, but I'd be interested to know what others see!

Chris reminds me of Emanuel Sandhu (with the butt cleavage pants).

Johnny might see some Elvis Stojko of the aggressively hetero JJ.

Post Episode 12 thoughts:

NOW YOU DECIDE TO GET SEMI-REALISTIC WITH THE SCORING? And ONLY for Yurio?! Like, all season, a freaking hand down has been fatal (as we saw in the last ep), let alone a fall, and the scoring hasn't cared about the SP margins (like when Phichit overhauled Yuuri at CoC), and now suddenly that Yuuri has set a world record with his FS, Yurio still wins because SP margin?! WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL GUYS?

Now Yuri has to win the World Championships. I had a feeling they were setting us up for a season 2 since they were talking about Worlds and 4CC more often.

I'm avoiding the rest of this thread because I'm only on Episode 9 and don't want to read spoilers by accident, but I just want to say that JJ is the greatest character ever and "Theme of King JJ" or whatever his SP music is called is the most amazing piece of ~Art~ to ever grace the skating world. :D

Not to point out the obvious, but his last name, Leroy, means "King" in French.

Further to my suggestion that JJ might be based on Stojko, Elvis was also the "king."

I just saw the first three episodes and was hugely entertained, but also fascinated how well it is done! Loved it!

Episode 12 score yelling:
I didn't even realise this till today, I think I just assumed he did, but Otabek didn't get bronze??? JJ got bronze???? HOW? OTABEK WUZROBBEDDDDD!

OTABEK WUZROBBED MEGA. JJ's overscored SP came back to haunt us and wtf at him actually getting a 200+ LP with a popped jump! WHAT THE ACTUAL FCUK YOI SCORERS.

Maybe it was a subliminal message about big country scoring/little country scoring?

JJ won bronze because JJ is the King and obvs the greatest ever. :D

Basically, JJ should just win everything. :cheer:

JJ won the bronze because JJ is the Patrick Chan character. Can't escape Chanflation even in anime!

My friend gifted me the soundtrack, and I'm honestly shocked at how much it has singlehandedly improved my winter commute. :)

As far as the scoring - I think it just sticks out more when so much else is so accurate (I saw posts online where the brands of blades were identified!) But who knows, maybe they're 5 years or so ahead of their time lol. It's kinda crazy to think that had this aired just a year ago I'd be rolling my eyes at the quads, but now it's conceivable.

I love that they showed the exertion it takes to do a program, and that many people watching the next Olympics will now know to look for full rotations, 2nd half bonuses and added difficulty in positions. And the variety of programs was pretty great, even including a Latin routine from a skater who was obviously not feeling it (sorry Seung-gil).

And wow did they nail JJ's doomed SP. I wonder if they actually had a skater describe it as falling down a hole before writing? I liked that he didn't *want* to give up but the last jump failed anyway - I'm sure so many skaters can relate. And the crowd support was all kinds of :cheer: and :wuzrobbed, thank you writers for depicting Canadian fandom so well.

(But yes, Otabek was robbed...I could see JJ scoring higher in the free with the harder quads, but there's just no way he could make up that short. That's a whole new level of Chanflation. And even from a smaller nation, you'd think Otabek would get more respect as a World bronze medallist.)

I'm dying to know how the next season picks up. One issue that did come to mind is that they'll surely need to have new programs to keep the casual fans interested, so some realism may have to be sacrificed if they stay in the same season going on to 4CC/Worlds. Or maybe they'll skip ahead to the next. In which case I could picture Yurio struggling after his early success, and it's hard to imagine injury not coming in at some point. A comeback story might actually be the best way to introduce a new character (maybe the mystery Japanese National champion?)

For me the scoring bugged me because it was so erratic in how accurate it was. Like the episode 7 ending, that was crazy, and the episode 11 scores, but then suddenly SP margin matters again in episode 12 and suddenly a fall is no longer fatal when before a hand-down was the end of the world!

JJ's SP score at GPF drove me most nuts. Even Chan would struggle to get 86 with two invalid jump passes and no combo.

Can we non-spoiler episode 12 now or is it still too soon?

Obviously JJ got at least +10 bonus points for skating to such brilliant and amazing music!!! No one else can match the glory of "The Theme of King JJ"!

"The lyrics suggest that JJ is on top of the world, and he invites everyone to join him there!!!" :D

I'm dying to buy the blu-rays, but I don't think anywhere in Australia is selling them yet or that they're being sold as region-compatible with Australia.
