Japanese Figure Skating 2016/17 season news, national team, updates

There's another Jr. Pairs team, Miura/Ichihashi, that competed at the 2016 Bavarian Open and missed the Jr. Worlds minimums by 1 pt (SP) and 1.99 pts (FS). They scored significantly lower in Sectionals than Koga/Howe did at their SB at JGP.

(my rough translation)
On the 16th this month after a committee JSF announced Ami Koga / Spencer Akira Howe split. Reportedly the reason is Koga hit her head hard when she fell down during training.

:( (((Ami & K/H)))
@kwanfan1818, rosewood posted this news on Nov. 16 in this thread. Hopefully Ami Koga is okay and that both skaters will find new partners if they wish to continue.

And, doh, Rippon will be at GPF, not Golden Spin, even though he surely would have been top 3 in the CS standings and might have knocked Brown out of the top spot :drama:

Pairs:

World Standings:
  1. Suto/Boudreau Audet (32, 1044 pts)
  2. Ono/Killing (62). They are .34 short of the World SP TES minimum, and they have the FS minimum. They did not compete at a CS event to get a SB.
  3. Koga/Howe (73, 228 pts, junior-eligible)
  4. Suzaki/Kihara (203, competing at Golden Spin, but unlikely to gain points in that field)
Season's Best:
  1. Suto/Boudreau Audet (25). They have the World TES minimums.
  2. Koga/Howe (49). They have the Jr. World TES minimums.
  3. Suzuki/Kihara will get on the SB list at Golden Spin.

Per a post higher up on this page, Koga & Howe have split following an injury.

Edit: Obviously I am way behind the curve on posting here. Sorry for the repetition.

@kwanfan1818 top 3 means top 3 among Japanese skaters. Thanks for the data as always!

Jr skaters are required to participate in Sr Nationals to be sent to Jr Worlds. Kihira meets some of the criteria but she bombed at Jr Nationals and ended up missing a spot for Sr Nationals. So she's basically out of Jr Worlds. Bummer.

I noticed some of TV commentators are struggling with similar names of Japanese skaters this season. (I'm talking about you Brit EuroSport.)
MIYAHARA Satoko
MIHARA Mai
KIHIRA Rika
KIHARA Mariko
British Eurosport is struggling even with names of skaters that are not similar to anything and are pretty straightforward. Mao's name had been mispronounced so many times, how hard is it to say Mao Asada?

Much as I enjoy their commentary, I think the British Eurosport people may be overthinking it sometimes. One of them frequently pronounces Boyang's last name as Yin instead of Jin. (His name is not Spanish!)

Here is a DM clip of Nobuyoshi Oda (9 years old). Maybe many of you noticed from his name that he is a relative of Nobunari Oda. Yes he is a nephew of Nobu. And the boy is training under Nobu's mom who also coached Nobu himself.

Nobuyoshi said during the interview that his dream is to win a medal at Olys. He also said "I wish I'll go beyond Nobunari-senshu at least." :cheer: He's already talented in making a joke. LOL
He placed 23rd in Novice B field at Novice Nationals.

Start with teaching him COP rules, now.

Talking about kids, Honda siblings' youngest sister Sara Honda (9 years old) looks very promising. She nailed a 3T as well as a 2A-2T (in the second half) at Kinki Regional.

She placed 4th in Novice B ladies field at Novice Nationals.

Honda siblings say Sara is the most talented in skating among them. It might be proved when she debuts in Jr field.

I can't wait/ imagine to see another skater more talented than Marin Honda.

So true!

It also bothers me that, after all these years, they refer to Javier as "Havyay." He's not French!

Anyway... back to the wonderful Japanese skaters.

According to Japan Times Hamada says Rika Kihira's injury (in her left knee) was not serious and Hamada's hoping to see 3A-3T from her at the JGP final. Hamada hopes Marin Honda wins the final this time.
When I inquired if Kihira was struggling with the knee injury, Hamada gave a firm response.

“No. No,” she said. “The injury is not serious.”

What are Hamada’s hopes for results at the JGP Final for her junior skaters?

“I would like to see Rika land the triple axel/triple toe,” Hamada stated. “Marin was third last year, so I would like to see her win this year.”

Marin was diagnosed as influenza by a team doctor.
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20161209-00000033-spnannex-spo

Marin got sick on the plane from Japan and she had fever of over 39 degree at the time. On the 7th her fever went down to 37 degree range in the morning and she participated in the official practice. But after that her fever of 39 degree came back and she skipped the next practice. She was diagnosed as influenza by a team doctor and ISF announced her withdrawal hours before the SP started.

Get well soon, Marin!
