:(

From a 2011 profile: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/08/19/anton-yelchin-is-new-hollywood-it-geek.html
Anton Yelchin moved to America from the Soviet Union in 1989, when he was just 6 months old. His parents, Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchin, were stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet, and had even qualified for the 1972 Winter Olympics in figure-skating pairs but were barred from participating by the Soviet government.
“I don’t exactly know what that was—because they were Jewish or because the KGB didn’t want them to travel,” said Yelchin in an interview with The Daily Beast. The family, which was quite well off by Soviet standards, sold all their worldly possessions—their home, their summer house, even their family jewelry, since the Soviet authorities wouldn’t let them take it—and immigrated to the U.S. as refugees who didn’t speak a word of English. Joined by Irina’s father, who had recently suffered a stroke, and Viktor’s mother, they eventually settled into a tiny apartment in West Hollywood.
AFAIK, his parents still coach skating in the LA area.

Just heard about this, so sad. He was so young. :(

I feel the need to go find all of his movies - I've only ever seen him in the Star Trek movies but he was enormously talented.

So sad and so young. Prayers for his family and friends. Rest in Peace. <3

Wow! poor parents...... RIP "new Chekhov".

Because "jewish", but not for anti-semitism (this time). Munchen Olympics, Summer 1972, Israeli team massacre. In fear of PLO attacks, Soviet Sports Ministry took off the teams all Jews they possible could, except for sure medal winners, like Rodnina, etc.

I'n so sad about this, but not in a "he was so young and I saw his movies" way. I took figure skating lessons from his dad years and years ago. The kindest, funniest coach. I will never forget the twinkle he always had in his eye, even though I only worked with him a few months. Everyone who skated in the LA area knew Viktor Yelchin taught good basics, but he was also a coach sought after by adult skaters. Not every coach has the patience to coach adults, but he did.

He never mentioned his son around the rink, but I imagine he was very proud. My heart breaks thinking about what they're going through, and on Father's Day too. :wuzrobbed: The universe is just not fair.

I also just read in an old LA Times article that they fled the USSR so Anton could have a better life, and that he was an only child. Goddammit it.

Oh so now I'm pissed. The Jeep he owns had a recall because it doesn't warn you when you are getting out and not in park. Also it used the Fiat shifter which is a total disaster. It always bounces back to the middle so you never know what gear you are in. I was driving my sisters Fiat for the first time and had to pull off the highway because I was in some bizarre gear that I couldn't seem to shift out of. Whoever designed that shifter stick was out of their minds. So awful.

I KNOW, this kind of design flaw pisses me off so much, as a designer myself. It's a similar design flaw that helped take down Air France Flight 447, when the co-pilot didn't realize his partner had set the stick wrong, because there was no immediate feedback (by position of the stick) on his side. Ughhhhh. Immediate feedback is the first rule of usability!

There needs to be set design standards for car driving mechanics. Newer luxury cars have all these new innovations, it's hard to keep track of them all. Innovation and being different is all well and good for technology, but car driving mechanics should be left damn well alone!

Very sad. I really liked him in the new Star Trek as young Chekhov.

Too young to die, and in such a freak accident!

My condolences to the family.

Such a horrific death, and such a freak accident. On other sites I've read people criticizing him for not bringing his car in to get fixed after the recall, but apparently the fix isn't yet available (or wasn't until recently). Not much he could of done.

Accidental blunt traumatic asphyxia sounds absolutely horrible. I hope that it didn't involve prolonged suffering, or (as horrible as it sounds) that he was at least unconscious for most of it.

I drive an older car, so am curious to know what kind of warning is issued? A verbal one, from a computer?

Also, I'm amazed that drivers would actually get out of a car that wasn't in park. I would do it automatically, without even thinking.

I have a car that has a similar gear selector. I hate it. It is to easy to flip to the wrong gear. 100% of the time or close to I stomp that parking break down before i get out of the car.

I don't understand how the car could have rolled into him though. From what I could see he was off to the left and the car should have missed him.

I thought that was what the recall was about. That he thought he had put the jeep in park, but it was actually in neutral. (What reasons are there for someone to put a vehicle into neutral for?)

Would the manufacturer ensure that every single person who had bought the recalled vehicles was alerted the recall by phone or email? People don't generally look at recall lists as a routine practice.

Also, the recall was voluntary, in which case a consumer might not think the repair or whatever was necessary.

Well, my Altima beeps like crazy whenever I push the button to turn it off without shifting into park first. I'd have to be drunk off my ass to miss or not care about that beeping before getting out.

And I believe it is just as PeterG says - he thought it was in Park but it was actually in Neutral. I hate to think of the possibilities, but perhaps he was just stepping out as it rolled. I mean sure, maybe he was drunk and unaware, but knowing how wonky that Fiat shift stick was, I am inclined to believe he thought he was in park, the car was rolling ever so slowly at first, and then it was over. :( This is why everyone should drive a Prius. I am not that familiar with them but I can't imagine them having this crazy shifting problem.

BIB - Prius is a good car, but why should everyone drive it?! I drive a Mercedes and it wouldn't allow me to turn off the engine or take out the key unless I'm in park

I drive a Mercedes too. I have a new fangled design. . My lever looks like a wiper stalk. I have keyless entry......so I can get in, get out and drive with my key in my pocket. I have exited the car with the car in park and the brake on, and find that the key lock is not working. That would be because the car is still on!

And, on my lever, Drive and Reverse are in opposite places than they would be in a traditional shifter.

Even really smart people can do stupid mindless things. I don't believe anyone deserves to die over stupid mindless things. My husband used to turn off the car before putting it into park, and it drove me CRAZY. (He had a 2005 Volvo and mine is a 2009 Honda Civic, and both cars allow you to turn it off before shifting it to park.) He FINALLY got out of that awful habit after driving my car for a while, because when I bought it, I programmed it to lock all doors when the car is shifted to drive, and to unlock all doors when the car is shifted to park. So when he turned the car off and THEN put it into park, he'd try to open the door and couldn't. :D I find it easier to always put the car in park when letting people in and out of my car for this reason, which is far safer anyway.

The fix that Jeep is distributing to dealers (they apparently just started) is a software patch that will shift the car to park when a door is opened. IIRC this is what BMW does for their cars. Now, why they didn't put that in there to begin with, is beyond me.:mad::mad:

Never watched any Star Trek
but he was the same guy as Charlie Bartlett, one of my favorite childhood teen films :(

and he seemed like the almost kid, but his career was on an upswing
his career at least he has worked with many prolific actors like Robert Downey, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Glenn Close, Mel Gibson, Athony Hopkins, Felicity Jones, Chris Evans, Justin Timberlake

I keep thinking of his poor parents who are now alone in their old age and will never have any grandchildren. :(
