Anna Pogorilaya - Her future prospects?

After 13th last year, the NHK disaster, all those pogosplats, her place in Boston not even being certain, the deep field... I don't care what colour - she is a world medallist and completely nailed both programmes.

The surprise just makes it all the sweeter. Especially considering the incredibly high standard. She really earned her medal.

Unfortunately for Anna a world spot is always going to be tough to get. Gracie will automatically get it every year. Anna has to be perfect every time to have a chance. This time even two perfect programs were enough for only a bronze. She looked so disappointed when her marks went up IMO she should have gotten in the low to mid 140's. I think this will make her even stronger.

I hope with all my heart you are right! There is so much power and potential in her (artistic, athletic, glamorous, what have you), I hope she is healthy and gets great material next year. Woo-hoo, you go Anna, so happy for her. Huge congratulations to Tsareva, as well.
 
Anna should have won the gold. Her jumps are much more powerful than Medvedeva's and artistry is about the same. Wagner and Gold had numerous major mistakes.

Gold had two mistakes. One fall and one doubled jump. Gold placed lower
Wagner had a step out and one or two UR. This was close. Anna was held down to leave room for Wagner or Gold. Otherwise she might have won the silver.

No way Anna's LP performance was better than Medvedeva's. Zhenya had the cleanest jumps and everything else. She had better expression, artistry, musicality.

Anna skated very well and I am proud of her. She needs more artistic development (who doesn't? May be Elena)
 
For any Russian lady, Anna included, it is important to skate well throughout the season, make it to the GPF, medal at the nationals and at Euros. The only thing Anna didn't do was the GPF. She had a rough season. That makes her achievement even more impressive.

I would say Wagner is also pretty much already at her artistic max, and very good artistically. The only thing she can really do is experiment with different programs and music. In her case she needs to continue to sharpen technically.

Medvedeva is close to a perfect skater already. Pretty much the only thing she can do is get bigger and stronger, and develop more height on her jumps and more speed and flow over the ice.

I read somewhere that Medvedeva wants to work on a quad salchow. She is young enough to start working on more difficult jumps. Artistically there is some room to develop, but she is very good right now.
 
It will be interesting if Anna can keep making major teams. I believe this is the first time ever she beat Elena R. so that is good news for her. Who wasn't at worlds that is a factor for next years team? Julia L. and Elizaveta obviously. I really highly doubt we will ever see Sotnikova at worlds again (I actualy like Adelina too, unlike many at this site, but just my feeling). Any new juniors age eligible next year? So most likely those 5 as the main contenders for the team, even if some others might have an outside shot. So assuming Medvedeva is a near lock, which isn't at all certain as she could grow, hit puberty, go in a slump, Anna would need to beat 2 out of 3 of Elena R, Julia, Elizaveta to make next years team. A tough ask, but with the confidence of her world medal now with her, certainly doable.
 
To my understanding, Tsurskaya and Fedichkina are not age-eligible, so it'll be the same list of contenders for next season as well (Sotskova may get Senior Grand Prix events next season too based on her World Junior silver).
 
Sotskova is already age eligible and she will be competitive.

I was just thinking that in 2014 Anna was robbed of a bronze at worlds because the judges wanted Carolina on the podium, despite her poor skate. This year Anna may have been robbed of a silver to make room for one of the US ladies, although it was pretty close between her and Ashley's marks, so it wasn't a wuzrobbed situation like in 2014. May be next year Anna will get the marks she deserves? I think with one more year under her belt, her artistry could be at a higher level, to match her technical ability, and that could help her move up the ranks.

Julia could be a contender next season but I'm not sure yet. She's getting better, but jumps have never been her strong suit. I'd put her as a question mark for now.

The main contender added to the list next season will be Sotskova, who is very consistent with her jumps. Artistically she isn't that strong yet, but if she can go out and skate well consistently at senior events, her PCS will rise like they do for most people that have the jump content to be competitive. Her SS need work, but like Anna she has big jumps, I don't see those going away.

Sima could also be a factor next season. She was really hot and cold this season, but we saw flashes of the old Sima so she shouldn't be counted out. She's 29th on the SB list and 20th on the WS list, I think because she made the top 24 in WS she has a GP assignment secured? Then she could maybe get a second invite as a substitute or host pick. I guess a lot will depend on how many names Russia submits.

Last I heard Proklova is still injured and not competing anywhere this season means the best she can hope for is JGP and senior B events in the fall if she's healthy.
 
Robbed of the silver, Wagner would have gotten bronze anywhere else and even that is debatable if worlds had been in Asia Miyahara would have medalled.

If Worlds had been in Russia it would have likely been a Russian sweep. Places 4-6 (maybe even 4-8) could flip flop based on the judging panel, let along 2nd and 3rd place.

The last 2 Russian ladies to win World Silver (Lipnitskaya & Leonova) encountered some troubles in following seasons though so maybe Anna getting bronze is for the best :p (Radionova who won bronze last year had another good season).

I thought Sotskova wasn't age eligible for worlds until 2018? Maybe I confused her with someone else though (it is hard to keep track of all the Russian phenoms).

Sima is good, but I just cant see her as anymore than a long shot for the 3 women Russian world team given their strength. I haven't ever seen anything from her yet to say otherwise.

I agree Julia will be in tough, but she is getting better all the time, and there was a day she rotated and landed all those tiny ugly jumps of hers, and that day could come again, and if it does she will probably score very well. She also could easily capatilize on mistakes by inconsistent Russians like Anna P, Elizaveta T, Adelina S. Even Elena whilie she mostly stood up looked to decline this year to me. I am sure she is incredibly disappointed with her worlds result, particularly since she did actually skate quite well there, but her jumps more and more are landed pitched forward and the judges aren't dishing out much GOE for her ATM.

Oh I'm not saying it is, I was more speaking to the level of the ladies competition than the "fairness" of the scores. With that many ladies skating clean/near clean in both programs, the results really come down to splitting hairs.

Yes I agree. I felt sorry for a few of the ladies, even a bit for Anna skating so great and getting only bronze (although nobody in the know gave her a hope to medal, and she medalled in a greatly skated event, beating out many more fancied skaters who also skated great, so I don't see how she should be disappointed but she seemed to be anyway). The one I felt worst for was Radianova who a year ago was either favorite or close 2nd favorite for gold going into worlds, got only bronze after badly underperforming, and this year skates one of her best LPs ever and gets only 6th place losing to: 1. Medvedeva who she used to always beat in juniors and up to this season but who has made her bitch this season basically, 2. Wagner with 2 mistakes, 3. Anna the #3 Russian who nobody expected to be above her at worlds, 4. Gold with 2 major mistakes. 5. Miyahara who she used to have to bomb to ever lose to. I wonder where she goes from here? She could start by cutting down the arm waving, and getting less awful programs than her trainwrecks from this year. Skating to Titanic, seriously girl!!

I saw her do a 3-3-3 in practice, morning of the LP.

Titanic was an awful choice of music- this particular music. The Belgian guy (Jorik H.) used a really good selection from Titanic, although I found the 'talking' excessive.

Elena needs not only better music but she needs to clean up some of her skating. I love her energy and emotion but sometimes it makes her skating sloppy. If she could control some of the arm movements and landed her jumps without so much effort (I do admire her guts in landing those), she could be in the mix. I don't know if she could add a 3A or a quad jump, but just streamlining her movements could yield big dividends. She has the mental toughness to be a winner.

:blah: Anywhere else in the world Sotnikova would have been 3rd at the Olympics.

Ashley skated 2 amazing programs and deserves her medal. No one in Russia is even complaining about it, so FSU will have to learn to deal with it too. :violin:

I agree on all you said, and I think skating so great and coming only 6th at worlds might be a blessing in disguise for Elena R. It will be the push she needs to re-evaluate her skating and work on the areas she really needs to improve (those you broke down beautifully) where if she had medalled it is unlikely she would have had the motivation, incentive, or most of all signal from the judges to improve. I look forward to seeing what happens with her in the next 2 years, and even just by the fall after the off season. Another thing she needs to start doing is listening to feedback on her programs in the early season. If everyone absolutely hates her programs (as was the case with this years, especialy her Titanic LP) either make some major changes, or scrap the program altogether for something new while there is still time. Even if you love the program, if nobody else does, it probably wont take you to your goals.
