This is the qualifying competition for junior and senior skaters for the 2023 Canadian Figure Skating Championships. It will be held in Winnipeg.

Here is the main website: https://skatecanada.ca/2023-skate-canada-challenge-junior-senior/
Here is the schedule as of November 15: https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/2023-CHA-JR-SR-Block-Schedule.pdf
There is a starting orders/results page but none of them are up yet: https://skatecanada.ca/2023-skate-canada-challenge-junior-senior/#starting-orders--results
There are two rinks and events overlap so it's going to be difficult to watch the whole thing live. I'll miss the entire senior women's free so I hope it will be archived quickly!

A maximum of 18 entries for singles, 15 in dance and 12 in pairs will compete at nationals. Top 3 from last years nationals plus those will grand prix assignments (so basically the entire national team plus Laurin/Éthier in pairs) will have byes in senior. (Pereira and Michaud should have a bye in pairs with their Golden Spin assignment; not sure if Pereira will attempt to qualify in singles or not, or if they would give her a bye based on having an assignment in a different discipline). A few skaters with byes tend to compete in this event anyway. Qualifying for the JGPF also gives a bye, so Bashynska/Beaumont will have a bye in jr dance and Kemp/Elizarov and Panetta/Thrasher in junior pairs (assuming skating junior domestically).

Start orders for senior events are also on the line. See here for more info: https://info.skatecanada.ca/index.p...tml#h11-canadian-figure-skating-championships

Oops ETA it will be streamed on Skate Canada's dailymotion page. https://www.dailymotion.com/skatecanada

First - thanks so much for making all this info so easily available for us.

Are you sure the title edit was needed? I seem to recall they always use the next year in the event name to match up with the year of the corresponding National Championship.

Okay, well I actually decided to go to Skate Canada website and they have it listed on the event page as "2022-2023 Skate Canada Challenge Junior/Senior" like your thread title, but interestingly, on my browser at least, the tab shows as "2023 Skate Canada Challenge - Junior/Senior".

I still say I remember them always using the upcoming year in the name. If you search through "All Videos" on their Daily Motion page, last year's Skate Canada Challenge videos are definitely labelled "2022".

(It's just as confusing as all get out for me, lol.)

Thanks so much, danafan. I did not realize until you posted it that the challenge is being held in Winnipeg. I live on the SW side of the city and the competition is way N but I am going to try and go and watch Wednesday. Unfortunately, my husband is out of town and I won't have a car but I think I will be willing to swing for a taxi ride to watch live skating.

The start orders are up now!

Of note - Lia Pereira is in the senior women's start list and she is also entered in pairs with Michaud despite them competing in Zagreb a week later.
Few of the juniors have moved up to senior since the summer, including Bombardier. Will be exciting to see how the seniors will do now that their growing has settled down etc

@Sylvia Thanks for copying and pasting the start lists. There are 32 senior women you missed a page, if you wanted to edit your post. :)

In juniors, two of the three JGPF qualifiers (Panetta/Thrasher and Bashynska/Beaumont) aren't competing, but Kemp/Elizarov (home base in Winnipeg) are.

The overlaps are a bit annoying, because the junior and senior men and women are competing at the same time in the two rinks. At least with the women, it will be possible to watch the last couple of groups of juniors (more or less) after the seniors finish on Saturday, but not for the men.

Looks like we will get protocols (unofficial) after each skater: "Results and Detail Sheets are being updated after each competitor with these representing unofficial results. Once segment results have been authorized per Skate Canada Competitions Rule, Publication of Results, printable .pdf versions of the Detail Sheets will be posted. Once these have been posted the results are considered official."

I remember when Skate Canada used to have live protocols after each element was performed but it's been a while.

In senior if I did my math right it seems that everyone will advance to nationals in pairs, dance and men. There aren't enough competitors to eliminate anyone. In senior women it depends on Schumacher's status (she hasn't officially announced a retirement though it has been speculated). So either top 16 or 15 senior women will advance.

Nov. 28/22 Winnipeg Free Press article by Laurie Nealin (free, but requires e-mail address):https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2022/11/28/manitobans-up-to-the-challenge

A couple of sections:
None of the four Manitoba athletes competing this week in the Skate Canada Challenge at Seven Oaks Arena had been born the last time Winnipeg hosted a national figure skating event.

When Breken Brezden, Ava Kemp, Yohnatan (Yoni) Elizarov and Emma King take to competition ice, they will be the first Manitobans to enjoy home-ice advantage since 2001 when the Canadian championships graced the old Winnipeg Arena.

Now, almost 22 years later, a new generation of 165 junior and senior figure skaters from across Canada are slated to compete Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 at Challenge (as it’s known), the qualifying competition for the national championships in early January in Oshawa, Ont.

Seriously! Nearly 22 years without an event. :revenge:

Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s fast-rising junior pair skaters Kemp, 14, and Elizarov, 18, will test-drive their new Cirque du Soleil short program on Wednesday, five days before flying to Italy for the prestigious ISU Junior/Senior Grand Prix Final.

The rookie pair, ranked second and fifth in Grand Prix competition in Europe this fall, made the program change to accommodate the addition of two higher-scoring elements — a triple twist lift and throw triple Salchow. The technical upgrade will make them even more competitive with the world’s top juniors.

“We planned to do the short program at Challenge to get the feeling of doing a triple twist while we’re nervous just so we’re prepared for the final, so we don’t go into it blind,” Elizarov said.

Their calculated move to skate only the first of two competition segments to conserve energy ahead of the global event leaves just three pairs contending for the junior Challenge title.

I am still hoping to go tomorrow but I will not have a car so does anyone know if these rinks are together inside the Seven Oaks Community Centre?

Yes, both arenas are in the same building. If you go in the front entrance, Rink A (red rink) is just a few steps inside, and Rink B (blue rink) is bit further down the main lobby. It's a very cool set up, on the second level there's a walking/running track and spectator concourse circling the two rinks, making it easy to walk from one to the other without having to go back into the lobby. The track is closed to the public this week so the skaters can use it, but I'm hoping the concourse will still be open. There's also a canteen with a pretty decent menu, and a "food court" with vending machines and tables and chairs set up. Overall it's a really nice facility, I can understand why Skate Canada chose it, but a bit of a shame it's not more centrally located. Just make sure to tell the taxi driver to take you to Seven Oaks Arena (at the west end of the building), not the Garden City Community Centre which is at the east end.

Thanks so much. That is most helpful!

Junior pairs short is just finishing. I guess Kemp and Elizarov decided not to skate their short program after all.

I'm a bit bummed that they didn't skate today, though it's completely understandable. Next week should be exciting!

Now they are showing a video of national team members trying to identify broccoli by just touching it. This is....weird

ETA: now they are touching play doh. It's called what's in the box. LOL

I was amused at how scared Benjamin Mimar was at even putting his hand in the box when they were told "it might move" - it turned out to be one of those rubber caterpillar children's toys.
