Worlds 2024 Men FS: ‘Putting the Eh? in Standing Ovation’

Back at my hotel. Got an 8am flight tomorrow. It’s been a blast FSU! As hard as it has been to make it through 6+ hours a day of swan lakes, it’s moments like Adam, Yuma and Ilya that make me want to go back in 2025.
Was nice to meet you even if brief!

I’m still in shock. Memola started off the group well. Jason I was just able to relax and enjoy without the stress from the SP. Excellent job from Lucas. Then Shoma…ugh but I could still appreciate his skating, you could hear a pin drop in the arena in the latter half (not in a bad way, at least imo) and that in itself was special.

I’m going to pretend the 3A fall didn’t happen because Yuma was seriously amazing otherwise.

And I still don’t even know what to say about Malinin, wow doesn’t cover it. After the reports I’d mentally written off hoping for the 4A, I should have known better from Ilia for sure. Thank you for an unforgettable performance.

And yes, I absolutely do want to go to Boston now.

Judge 3 - 9.75 skating skills for Malinin. Regardless of him rightfully running away with the competition, this is not reality. There are quite a few judges that had him more in the realistic regions though, even with that performance.

Judge 7 nearly went +4 and +5 for every single element Kagiyama did aside from that Axel mistake.

Lots and lots of q calls.
Judge no. 3 was Mr. Yury KLIUSHNIKOV (country?) & no. 7 was Ms. Anna KANTOR (ISR?): http://www.isuresults.com/results/season2324/wc2024/SEG002OF.htm

Decided to walk the mile back to the hotel; had all the energy in the world after that dream podium.

It was quite the privilege and good fortune to witness so many great skates. The high of good competition and an energized crowd at a sporting event is one of life’s great simple pleasures. I can’t believe so many fools skipped the first flight when Adam was in it…their crazy loss of missing that phenom comeback.

I can’t wait to see how Yuma, Ilia, and Adam continue to push themselves and the sport. I have some personal connections with Ilia et al., but even I took some comfort that he was at least 4th in PCS tonight (breaking 90 not withstanding). The rip of Yuma’s blades is everything.

We got a good “I’m the eldest boy” scream in there for Ilia, but I guess tonight he proved that he was Tom all along.

This was one of the most incredible nights of skating I've ever seen in my life. And, I've seen a LOT of them. As many others have said, it was an absolute DREAM podium. What a FANTASTIC way to end Worlds! Such a FUN-filled week it's been. It's going to take a while to "come down" from this high for sure but, oh, the memories we all will carry from this one! I've loved sharing it with you all. Thanks to everyone for making a fabulous Worlds even better. :)

We need someone to create an Ice Dance Fandom Generator. You plug in the names of your past and present favorites, and it spits out the names of some other teams that may suit you.
Her name is @cygnus! She went to all of the Canadian events for younger skaters within striking distance of home, and she used to give me a list of skaters that I would like :)

And she was always right :cheer2:

Thoughts from tonight in the arena:

Hyungyeom Kim--What a great start! First up, and he laid it down.

Donovan--The audience just loves him. He has what Jason has. And Vasiljevs to some extent. They all love to skate. Even when it's hard. Even when things go wrong. You can almost always see how much they love the skating & enjoy the interaction with the audience.

Jason--What can I say? Repeating what I just said above and adding my sense of awe at how often he takes the competitive moment--whatever it is--and runs with it. This was a beautiful competition for him. If he chooses to continue, I will continue to love watching him; and if he chooses to make this the end, what a brilliant one it was. A joyful career from the first time I saw him skate (winning Junior Nationals with the Nutcracker in Spokane).

Deniss--The Lion King music is so glorious. All of it, really. Often when I'm mired in a sea of soft & flowy programs or screechy violins, I find myself wishing for an entertaining Lion King program to break up the monotony. Not today. Today, the music was varied already; and yet Deniss did what one always hopes for with great music, he delivered it with the musicality and personality it deserves. This was great!

The podium--Wow! What an incredibly well skated trio of programs. Basically one miss among all three podium free skates. I cannot think of the last men's event that I've seen live that was skated so well. Every one of these three guys went for it all. No holding back (because they knew they couldn't). The men were absolutely the men in this event. There were ups & downs and a lot of learning happening here. But also we were so fortunate to get to see this!

Adam--Brilliant. I thought so before when I saw it on television early this season, and I felt the same tonight. It's been a long time since I felt this way watching a program live. When you see the program you most love & most want to see skated well--one you are also terrified won't be--performed absolutely as brilliantly as you had envisioned.

Jason after his FS in the ISU's "Quick Quotes" document:

(on whether this is “mission accomplished” on a renaissance of his career) Mission accomplished, 100%.
To have that reception from the audience, like that’s already, it filled me up with so much gratitude and
excitement to just get out there to perform. (on his coaches, Tracy Wilson and Brian Orser) It has been six
full years living in Toronto and working with them. The amount that I’ve learned will last me a lifetime, and
I’m still learning, and they’re two of the best coaches in the World. (on continuing to skate after the 2018
Olympics and another outing at Worlds) It’s so cool to just keep on learning and growing in this space and
that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve just feel like I keep discovering new parts of myself every step along the
way and that’s why I’m here, that’s what, it’s like all bonus. (on next steps) A huge change that I’m making
just right off the get-go, is I’m going to start working a new program when I leave Montreal. So that’s a huge
thing. Last year I toured all spring and didn’t take a break, and right now I’m going back to create new
pieces for next season - getting a jump start. I’ll see you guys next year.

The crowd was positively ELECTRIC. I know this board likes to joke about knitters and Canadian Standing O's, but the crowd got behind every.single.skater - it was amazing. And in between skates, the LOC got everyone revved up - between Kaitlyn Hawayek DJ'ing and former world champions shooting T-shirts into the crowd and amping everyone up, there was an incredible energy in the building.

After Adam skated I told Mr. BB that I thought he would end up on the podium, and there he is. He had nothing to lose and it showed in his skating, right down to the F.U. ISU back flip.

The whole comp was great, but the final flight was incredible. My one question mark was Britschgi, for both his choice of music and kente cloth for his costume. Unless he has African roots that are not obvious, Switzerland must not be as concerned about cultural appropriation as North America is.

Uno had a terrible warm up, so I wasn't surprised that he faltered, especially since his jump technique is sketchy at best. But Kagiyama, aside from the fluke fall on nothing, hit it, and the crowd erupted. For Malinin to then go out, skating last, and pull off the what he did just blew my mind. Probably the most electric skate I've ever witnessed, and I was privileged to see Shen & Zhao win 2003 Worlds. It was the combo of what Malinin did, and how he did it - under the most insane pressure imaginable. He has competitive nerves of steel, and a talent that is unmatched. Sure, he doesn't have the skating skills that Kagiyama, but he holds his own, and when you add in his jumps, he is a supremely deserving world champion.

This was one of the best nights of skating I've ever witnessed. I'm still buzzed....

I wanted to try something completely new for my LP. As traveled to Africa a lot with my parents when I was younger - I was in South Africa and Namibia - and I love the atmosphere and the vibe of this continent. I think I need to work on getting a bit more relaxed during the skate to transfer it completely.”

It didn't bother me because it wasn't an African program but a program based on a cartoon that features animals who happened to live in Africa if that makes sense.

Okay, it looks like it was an African program. I think it was meant to be culture appreciation but the kente cloth is questionable.

Two weeks ago I made an impulsive decision to go to Worlds. Booked everything in one day so I wouldn’t talk myself out of it. Damn!

Huge snark though. I had a chill I couldn’t shake so after the FD ended I ran back to my hotel room for a nice hot cup of tea and a snack…and missed Adam. So pissed…who would have imagined THAT would happen?:wall:

Can we stop with the arms over the head please.
Regarding Lee, he doesn't need the arms over the head to jump. I believe the reason he does them for all his jumps now is because he was getting GOE deductions for bad posture when he jumped with his arms in a regular position. I remember a commentator criticizing said posture & then saying the problem was eliminated when he jumped with his arms over his head. (It straightens his back & eliminates the shoulder shrug). Ever since that commentary, he's been jumping with the arms over his head for most or all of his jumps.

Very excited for you to have experienced this. I saw some fan videos on X/Twitter and I got goosebumps watching those. They gave a great sense of that human "electric energy" in the building during a historic performance.

And who could forget Plushy's exhibition program to Sex Bomb, with the huge codpiece and giant papier-mache head?
Aw , yes, Sex Bomb. I remember seeing him do that for the very first time at the Worlds gala in Vancouver. He was 18 years old, I think. The Canadian audience absolutely loved it (as did the CBC TV commentators who thought it was such fun). It was the 1st time we had seen this young Russian kid's sense of humour ... he had always seemed so serious (to us) before. Later on in his career, of course, he did other comic exhibition routines. It was his real head in Vancouver with the "enhanced" torso and then his real legs that looked so skinny compared to the torso. It was funny, as he meant it to be.

You know, after 2022 I was content with what we had been gifted by him, and when someone first mentioned 2026, I thought it was a pipe dream. But it's real. It's really, really a possibility. And he will still be magnificent every step of the way.
