We Could Be Heroes: Duhamel and Radford Uber Thread

I just love that when you watch this clip of Mirai landing her 3A, in the background you can see super stoked Meagan jump so high the camera frame just cannot contain her: https://twitter.com/EricHagemann/status/962889097735008256 :biggrinbo

And of course, more jumping for joy was to come! :rollin:

You gotta love Meagan's intensity. She is the number 1 figure skating fan and I bet she did all the calculations for the team event like us here :D

Wishing them a great individual event, I think it's them vs. candyman for the bronze and I'm definitely cheering on them for this one! :cheer2: I cannot say it enough, but they are fantastic people.

I want to thank Meagan Duhamel for planning to rescue another Korean dog destined to be served as dinner to the athletes. It's so horrible that this practice of raising dogs in horrible conditions on meat farms continues. I personally stay away from eating beef, pork, lamb, etc., although I still eat chicken, turkey, and fish. I've never eaten venison, and I prefer almond milk and coconut milk over any form of cow's milk. To eat dogs, cats and horses, and actually raise them for slaughter. I just can't understand that practice. :( I mention horses because many are often slaughtered to be sold as meat after being worked to death (often as carriage or race horses), or ruthlessly captured in the wild (mustangs). And that practice regarding horses occurs in the U.S. as well as in other countries. Percherons are now bred in France for the dinner table. I read an article claiming that it's a good thing Percherons are being raised for slaughter, because otherwise the breed would be extinct. As if that's a valid reason for eating them. :duh:

Thanks again to Meagan for shedding more light on this horrible, horrible practice. Such abuse of poor, defenseless animals!

Look at her pup's poor, sweet face. His legs are permanently misshapen due to abuse suffered as a puppy. Meagan says, "He doesn't even care to play. He just walks up to everybody and wants to be held."

The comments by the restaurant owners are so sad and cruel. I understand it's a difference in cultural realities and practices, but still why dogs, cats and horses?

I've never been the biggest D&R fan simply because I prefer a different style. But I loved seeing how happy she was when they won. She looked like this little kid jumping for joy and I loved it when Scott M tossed her in the air. No one can deny they have worked so hard and so openly and honestly to get where they are. They are Olympic champions no matter what people say and they definitely deserved it.

If D&R were going to have a letdown, tonight would have been the night. Workmanlike, but did the job. With another medal in their sights, they have nothing else to lose. Go for it!!! So impressed with their fight. "Well, it didn't affect Duhamel and Radford" will hopefully be the default response when someone becomes concerned that a pair does both components of the Team event.

Sharing the below clip of Nick McCarvel speaking to the singer, Amy Meservy, who performed the U2 cover of With or Without You. It's really cool that someone anonymous sent her tickets to Canadian Nationals where she got to meet D/R. Then Meservy booked tickets to Pyeongchang, but again someone anonymous paid for her tickets and her accommodations. How kind! More interesting is how Meservy ended up singing that song as a result of a painful break-up. She's very emotional she said, about seeing D/R make something beautiful out of her pain. :saint:

MEAGAN AND ERIC!!! They have all the Olympic medals!!!
Yeah, aaaaaalllll the colors! And for them, that bronze must've felt like gold today!:cheer2:

Also, they delivered FOUR solid programs in less than a week... That's just an extra level of WHOAH.

(ETA: Rewatching, I heard Meagan say "maaan, that was a tough act to follow" in the k&c after they had received their scores. So yeah, extra extra level of "whoah" for them to go right after S/M, knowing what just happened on the ice, and then skate like that and deliver a near-PB! Such competitors these two!)
Does the Olympics have a pewter medal, though?
Nah, I don't think pewter medals exists anywhere outside of US Nats. At least I've never heard of "pewter medals" in any other context. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) I know there are some Olympic sports like boxing where they give out 2 bronze medals.

3rd extra level of WHOAH: Apparently their 4STh today was the first clean quad throw in Olympic history?!
Duhamel/Radford: [On 1st throw quad in Olympics] It's a fact that we didn't know. It's amazing and we will see more of them for sure. Last year, it was disappointment after disappointment. Although we had some ups and downs this year, we never felt disappointed

I just want to say how wrong I was about D&R.

I am absolutely delighted for them and I bow down before her grit and determination. And her behaviour towards Aliona when the results were announced is one of the loveliest moments I have seen backstage in skating. She is a great lady.

Very happy for them!! Love the way she comforted Aliona and Bruno in the K&C. Such a kind heart, to think of them when she must be over the moon!!!

I honestly can't believe that she was more concerned with congratulating Aliona than celebrating her own unbelievable achievement, especially as D&R were the ones who could have so easily slipped into 4th and lost out on their first individual Olympic medal. A true class act. I was very wrong about her all along.

Olympic dream comes true for Duhamel and Radford
Canadian duo executes season's best to reach their 1st pairs podium
By Pj Kwong: https://olympics.cbc.ca/news/article/olympic-dream-comes-true-for-duhamel-and-radford-51849.html
From beyond the boards, it was very clear they were in this together and supporting each other all the way. With their throw quad Salchow out of the way [a historic first in Olympic competition], you could see them relax and once Meagan landed her throw triple Lutz, her smile was so wide as to almost look like she was having an out of body experience.
My sense of Eric Radford is that he is a big picture guy who is able to bring his partner's feet back on the ground both figuratively and literally. Losing focus at this point in the program would have cost them everything. They kept it together.
This was the fourth strong skate in a row for Duhamel and Radford at the Olympic Games, if we include their appearances which helped win gold in figure skating team event at the start of the week. Their new season's-best score was no surprise, although they had to wait through two more teams to find out that they claimed an Olympic bronze medal.
After Olympic bronze, Canada's Duhamel and Radford feel complete: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...hamel-and-radford-feel-complete-idUSKCN1FZ0X7
“These four performances just perfectly wrapped up my skating career and my skating journey,” Duhamel said. “I feel so complete right now. I feel like I‘m going to be happy for the rest of my life.”
The pair told reporters that they were unlikely to compete at the world championships next month in Milan.
“Right now we are going to relish in this wonderful moment,” Duhamel said.
...
“We will keep a foot in the door when it comes to skating,” Radford said.
“We look forward to doing shows and touring for as long as possible. We just feel so fortunate that we will have these incredible memories for the rest of our lives.”

:cheer2:

ETA link to the Associated Press article: Canadians Duhamel, Radford to retire after winning Olympic pairs bronze
“This feels like it’s going to last forever,” said Radford, whose gold in the team event made him the first openly gay male Winter Olympic champion. “It feels better than I could have imagined.
“I’m going to have so much hardware when I go home. I’m just going to stare at them.”
Duhamel and Radford are still near the top of their game, as evidence Thursday by their dramatic throw quad salchow, the first to be landed in Olympic competition. But they insisted that the time is right to step away from competing at the highest level.
In fact, they almost sounded relieved at the possibility.
When all of the medalists were asked Thursday whether they would compete in next months’ world championships in Italy, Massot leaned into the microphone and said “Yep.”
Duhamel leaned and said, “Nope.”
“We’re really proud of ourselves,” Radford said, “and we’re just going to enjoy the moment.”

I don’t know how today will end but it feels good to know that maybe, I’ve already made a difference. It’s been fun dreaming my wildest dreams and having so many of them come true. Thank you for all of the support.
Now...time for a little more #HometownGlory

This got posted in the Sav/Mas fan thread...
You guys wanted to see some backstage reaction, this fan shot a nice little video where I think we see her husband coming to jump into her arm and his wife jumping in his arms. Lots of smooching, people not able to handle PDA please refrain :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrklVnNHaWg&t
She can't stop crying and Meagan Duhamel is right there to hug her when needed. She's been fantastic, such a good sport.
...and around the 45 second mark, you can witness a rather rare occasion of Eric being lifted up! :biggrinbo (by very excited Paul Poirier, it seems like)

I will greatly miss this tremendously talented, classy, and successful team. I actually thought their LP was a bit undermarked, considering they had the hardest technical program and skated it almost clean, although with Sui & Han's short program lead it still would have kept them at bronze. That bronze is worth gold though, what they did after all their obstacles and their recent decline with injury, just amazing. And they also of course get an Olympic Gold to go home with. And to complete a great career as the class acts they are.

I also hope they get credit for the technical innovation and extra difficulty they brought to the sport, and their improvements in artistry and unique style they brought to the sport.

And Eric has been so brave to come out as an openly gay man while he was at the very top and hopefully leads the way for others to come.

I hope I see them in shows for years to come in Canada.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but the Corriere della Sera has an article on Meagan's dog rescue efforts: http://www.corriere.it/animali/18_f...ti-88e7ecb8-11bc-11e8-9c04-ff19f6223df1.shtml

And many congratulations to Meagan and Eric. They were outstanding in the free and their sportsmanship after the event was exemplary.

Yes, Meagan's love for animals hit the Internet and there're many articles in English too.

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2018/0...-olympian-meagan-duhamels-mission_a_23357610/ + many more
Just another reason how much I love this couple, they'll be greatly missed.
